hahaha... you don't know the hours of perl code I had write to parse and analyze the challenge data to come up with those breakdowns! =] (Once I had it done, it was trivial to only analyze a sub-set of the data to come up with the 2004-only stats though.)

But I agree, since everything is in the "big DPC database", it should be possible to compute these stats after each challenge, and I know for a fact that requests for "more stats!" are "on the list". Since I'm a big fan of stats, I'll be pushing for more of them when D&L get around to adding "cool new stuff" to DPC. =]

Unfortuantely I don't have access to the database to determine that info; that would have to be something D&L would have to "analyze".

oh well. :( how'd you do your top 10 info then? some sort of script that polled each user's profile? just curious.

No Sher, far from it, very far indeed.
Most often voters don't see through the same kind of eyes you do.
What ever you do, don't change!

Hmm, my 2004 average so far is app. 5.6 :(
And my 2 new entries will not help me, I fear. But I had fun, just should submit more.

My 2005 goal is:

Portraits

I enjoy looking at them, most of my favorites are portraits but I am just such a chickenshit to do them. Talking to someone is fine, but pointing a camera at someone makes me feel uncomfortable. :(

I thought this one was one of the best portraits I have seen on DPC or anywhere for that matter. Keep up the good work. I think it would have been a ribbon in the music challenge.

Sher, you are not getting worse, just more creative. I love seeing how much everyone has grown.
12/05/2004 12:32:54 PM · #60
Okay, this thread is in desperate need of someone more average! I started taking photographs in August and joined dpc right away. I've since entered 13 challenges. My average for the top 10 is 5.39:

My top 10. I don't really see any pattern. If you see something I dont that might help me out, please let me know. My avg is 5.05 (sigh). My highest 6.309. My goal for 2005 is to at least break 7.

Interesting but true comment, seems the more creative we get, the lower our average. Wonder what that says about the voters?

-danny
(Amazed that he listed 3rd highest overall)

That creative shouldn't mean crappy :)

That there's too many of them looking for the wrong thing!

* hey, I don't mean to hijack..I'm going to get flogged for this...but if I could steal your attention for 1 minute and direct you to a thread called "confused about prints" I have a quick rookie question for which I need some help and the title of the thread is obviously not attracting any attention! Let the flogging begin! *

Edit: Nevermind...

I think that I may hold the record for worst photographer on DPC!

56 challenge entries and no ribbons...who can beat that distinguished record?

In my case, the opposite is true. Compared to the 'real' top photographers, I handle the camera fairly poorly. I am totally dependent upon creativity to have any chance against the truly gifted photographers among us (many of whom aren't even on that list).

GeneralE springs to mind, and this site would be a poorer place without him. A low score does not equal bad photography.

I joined in August this year and have results from 16 challenges. The average of my top 10 highest entries is 6.333. I am quite satisfied with that considering only 6 challenges for trial and error.

I have learned incredibly much since I joined DPC. Before I joined I had not taken any night or studio shots. My top 4 scores are studio and night shots !!! DPC has pushed me into directions which I would probably never have entered. The comments, threads and the PMs really help me developing as a photographer. Thanks everyone.

I am really looking forward to 2005 doing landscapes and outdoor shots. It's so dark here in Iceland the 4 months around Christmas.

EddyG is there any chance of getting a top 100 list?

Meeting the challenge and getting Ribbon has nothing to do with quality photography, you have to please the crowd here, sort of speak :-)

Sorry Sher,

No prize for you, when I see all of those gorgeous ribbons on your DPC profile. It is a case of "a rich man, crying poor!"

You are in a slump, that's all. As a sports fan in Toronto, I know all about temporary slumps...you must be a complete photographic failure to join my club. We have strict standards in this biggest loser's club that must be maintained, er...I mean...or not maintained...something like that...

Cheers,
Michael

I'm certainly not one of the top photographers here but I'm happy with my 6.68 for 2004. I have improved dramatically over 2003 but perhaps that's because I took a lot more photos. I look forward to seeing all your new photos in 2005.

I also have a pretty good overall increase from 2003 (5.7672) to 2004 (6.1040).
The average of my top-10 results for 2004 was 6.670
My top 10 for 2004 were:

A bit of everything, as usual.

even though i am far from the top 10, a feel even further from a ribbon, i can easily say the dpc has pushed to do try things that i never would attempted on my own, and i am happy with a 5.9681 avg for my top 10 of 2004:

edit: i had a new entry into my top 10 for 2004 ;-)
