Nice shot - I can't help with the CA but the ducks are Scaup - I can't tell whether Greater or Lesser - you either have to see them together to tell by size or in flight to tell by the wing bars. Judging by the little crown on the male I'm guessing Lesser. I can't see on your profile where you're from - I'm guessing the US where these are fairly common - I saw one over here once years ago but they are very rare visitors.

Nice use of high key - and in response to a comment below I'm pretty sure i read recently that there are more lions in texas than there are in the wild. But it may have been tigers ................ or Florida.
