You are most welcome! I think if you click on the lumie pic in the comment, you can get the thumbnail number and post it on your page.

Thanks posthumous for the blue and mistaking my identity. (I have my doubts about the photo, but I accept tribute).

In the Death by a Thousand Cuts Challenge, I have awarded five Orders of the Thumb. A bit under 0.5% of entries. One in every two hundred, more or less.

I was immensely disappointed with most of the entires, because so few were prepared to try anything adventurous, even with the liberation of this once-in-a-lifetime occasion. So with one exception I have deliberately biased my selections towards the radical, even the dissident. I hope regular readers of this thread will agree that that's appropriate here.

The deeply dubious distinction of the Order of the Thumb:
is therefore awarded (in no particular order):

1) to ursula for this remarkable achievement in a normally banal genre; and
2) to MichaelC for this beautifully balanced encounter between photographer and subject; and
3) to slipintoshadows for this sophisticated exploration of imagery versus reality; and
4) to timfythetoo for this intrepid tilt at the windmills of convention & lumpen conformity; and finally
5) to meo729 for this bewitching memoir which reaches all the way forward from the past to the present.

If you're reading this and thinking "what a wanker", please take a moment to consider what kind of bravery it takes to try to do something different, rather than something safe. The average position achieved by these five images was 535th place. Just imagine a world where nobody took photographs like these. Where every photograph scored 7.000 or higher. Blah.

Thank you Paul for the honour, and for the people, like colorcarnival, that asked what happened next when I tried to take more than my dollars worth I give you this:)

Hah! Every one of those was amongst my top picks. I'm particularly amazed at the low score on JJ's shot, whcih to me is absolutely priceless.

Every once in awhile, a shot in a challenge literally stops me in my tracks. JJ's in this challenge did that. It was an immediate 10 for me, and I do not hand those out often.

posthumous I really love your eye for obscure beauty, watching your thread has made me much more aware of beautiful images that do not always fit the DPC typical favorites but they always seem to have more feeling or an underlying story. Your blue ribbon winner for "Hidden Gems" is one of my favorites also and I give you a lot of the credit for helping me look at these types of images more intently. Congrats to all the winners, really nice photos!

The beauty of this thread is in seeing how others see the challenge. Here's how I saw it...

LOL! This thread makes me feel so much better - almost all my faves are here. I AM NOT ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope me posting this here is not out of place, but here are a couple images that stuck to my mind (besides some of the images mentioned alredy in the thread), in no particular order:

The thought of the image, trapped/escaping, it somehow struck me as right.

A beautiful action and nature shot, full of exhuberance!

An image that seems all wrong, and yet is all right to my eyes.

I just like this one.
