I don't qualify as a Master. But, challenges like this make me wanna be one.

With all due respect to your three ribbons Brad, this one sentence Tells us that you just don't understand the contents of this thread. It is the fact that people have had the option of not participating taken out of their hands, and that some like you seem oblivious to their position, that is causing such an unnecessarily heated discussion. Try to put yourself in their shoes for a moment.

Wasn't there a forum where many, many people wanted to see the ribbon winners/photographers go head to head? Cripes! Good idea. Fun! What else are you here for? There are a ton of "whiner" sites to go to for it.
I have only come close once with a 4th. I am trying to do better, but I like to shoot what I LIKE. Sometimes that doesn't end up being the most popular. If I WANT to ribbon, then I change my style of shooting and what I shoot to suit the tastes of the voters then.

This sounds much like a monthly free study... EXCEPT... WITH A FREE STUDY.... ALLLLLLL MEMBERS CAN ENTER... WHAT DID I PAY FOR?????

PAY MONEY - TO NOT BE ABLE TO ENTER... JUST CAUSE I HAVE NOT WON 1ST 2ND OR 3RD...

I REALLY THINK IT SUCKS!

You're still getting exactly what you paid for.

Actually I do understand it completely. There are ribbon winners not wanting to participate, hence number one.
I can put myself in the denied group very easily. It would just make me strive to do better, learn from the (dare I say) Masters. It is exactly what I have done.

If the challenge were open only to 5 ribbon winners & above, I would say WOW - here's comes one stunning challenge and couldn't wait to see what is submitted and learn form them. I wouldn't complain that I couldn't enter - the cutpoint would have been made I wouldn't have qualified, and have no one to blame but myself.

It's their site, and I agreed to go along with it.

The Gurus on this site have so much to offer all of us and guess what? It's free for the taking! Sharing how a shot was done is commonplace.

I joined in April and "thought" I knew how to take a picture. I kinda' did, but was in snapshot made. I still go there once in a while, but if it weren't for the help & healthy competitions here, I would just be sharing pictures and stayed in snapshot mode.

This site has irreversibly changed my life in a way I am sure it has for many others, and for that, I thank the members here and the staff for what they endure everyday keeping a great place to want to be.

I'll be on the sidelines, cheering on those in a challenge I can't enter, not complaining about not qualifying to enter it.
High Schools do this daily with JV & Varisty squads.

as he steps off his soapbax...

I feel bad for d/l. They were listening to the chat in the forums, came up with an idea that sounded like a winner, and now lots of folks are feeling p'd off and excluded. Why can't everyone just calm down and at least let this play out. If it's not successful, it will not be repeated. If it is, everyone can benefit from it.
It could raise the level of submissions (not mine, I don't know what I'm doing). Everyone will be trying extra hard to enter great pictures so they can get into the masters circle. Think about how nice it will be in the future when 80% of the entries are really beautiful, well thought out pictures that you gladly give a 8,9 or 10 to.

Good point! I too remember reading just such a thread and I also agree with you about shooting what I like, whether it ribbons or not. Sure the recognition is nice but I get more than enough praise for my work and good critiques too! Winning a ribbon on this site certainly isn't my ultimate goal and it's not even a prerequisit for the photography career I am embarking on.

What I don't understand is how bent out of shape some folks are getting over this challenge and for that matter, other topics that have come up in the past. Yeah, we've joked about this site being addictive and all but jeez, don't you people have a life? Do you have nothing better to do than bitch about something that is so obviously insignificant in the grand scheme of things? Listen, I'm not trying to be rude but if this is that upsetting to you, maybe you need to re-evaluate your participation in this site and your photography hobby. What are your goals and how does entering challenges help you reach those goals? Oh and put CHILL OUT on your list of things to do today!

And this is one of the most important reasons many of us thought it best to not have regular Free Study challenges; we have eveidence right here of someone who was planning their future photographic efforts with that challenge in mind. One of the few "challenges" we can be presented with a Free Study competition is to not know when it is (same reasoning as caused us to aboandon speed challenges associated with holidays).

I'm sure there will be plenty of challenges for everyone ... I don't see any reason to get overly excited about this one (except to see the results).

Dang! I can't believe all the furor about this.

Go, take some pictures, relax, shoot something for the Backlighting challenge, the Travel Guide challenge, or just shoot something you like. Step away from the keyboard, pick up your camera and go. Don't forget your extra memory cards.

Remember, photography is fun.

If you can't say that and believe it, maybe you need a new hobby, something you do like.

This is an extra challenge. No one has been excluded from the challenges they paid for. This is not a regular challenge that has excluded anyone.
None of you have been excluded. Wackybill, you are not excluded from anything you paid for. Drew and Langdon, the owners of this site, have invited some of their friends over for tea and a photoshoot. That's all. And with an attitude like some people have taken here, I'm not surprised you weren't invited.

For those of you who have lost your temper (In general, if you have posted twice in a row at any point in this thread, there is a good chance you have lost your temper. That's just a little litmus test for you.), you can go pound sand. Thbpbpbpbpbpbp.

For months now many people here asked for category to separate "masters" form "beginners" or pro form amateur. I think this is a good 1st step and I will certainly not complain about it as long as this challenge have a counterpart for us "no-ribbon-winner".

Meanwhile, back at the Ranch, Jacko went out to take some photos while all the whining was going on. Watch out bugs, here I come.

I think this is a great idea. Can't wait till I can participate. Good luck to everyone in the challenge. I can't wait to see the results and I bet the photos will be awesome!

Okay, there, I have said it. I didn't mean to make any enemies tonight. Just speaking my opinion which has always been welcome in the past.

Peace!!!

Your opinions are still welcome, and important. I just ask that we let this experiment run through to completion before drawing any conclusions. I see potential for a lot of good side effects from this, many of which may not be immediately apparent.

Let's see, you paid $25 for a year's membership and that gives you access to compete in 52 weekly challenges in addition to the 52 weekly challenges that the non-paying folks get. That works out to a cost of $0.4806 per challenge. And that's not counting the free-studies, speed challenges, portfolio space etc.

So what it really boils down to is a tantrum over 48 cents....

Sheeesh!

You paid for an additional members' challenge as well as the open challenge. That is two challenges a week with an occassional speed challenge or more recently a free study at the discretion of the site owners. Competing in more challenges means more chances to win a ribbon. If you succeed to win two or more ribbons you have the opportunity to take part in additional challenges. You pay for two challenges but you have to earn the third. It's like collecting brownie points for later use.
