I apologize for that - I didn't mean to call anybody stupid. That does not invalidate any of my other arguments, however.

A challenge excluding other fee paying members? Sounds fair to me.

Amen. There are only 76 people on that list. If only half of them enter, there won't be much to vote on. I wish the cutoff were two ribbons just to get a bigger field.

let's look at it this way... at the very least it will be interesting. But wait a whole month? A whole month of this thread... dunno if I can stand it tho!

Good luck to those who enter! I hope we can vote on it.. it should be fun!

Actually you didn't (thanks) -- which is which I said "imply" rather than "declare" above ... you did call the THING stupid, which targets the correct object (the experiment, not the experimenters) of the criticism, but in such loaded terms that the average person would likely take it the wrong way.

Ribbons...
Here is my story of Luck, being in the right place at the right time:

Looking back at the short time I have been here, I look at the competitions I have been in and have my own unique feeling on my placings.

In the Habits competition, I took a Blue Ribbon with my "Morning Essentials", but feel that it had a lot to do with how the rest of the submissions were. My submission was 1/2 point higher than the second place and from there, the points spread was tight.

In the Botany Challenge, the top 3 submission were pretty close, and below that, the competition was tightly clustered, with little difference between the placings. My "Just Floating" took a Red Ribbon, right between to outstanding shots. This was a good competition.

In the Hope competition, My "A Sapling" shot was 1/2 point higher than the 2nd place, and down from there, it was agian tight, but also think it was similar to the Habits competition, which was not very well received and submitted on. This was my first attempt at really conceiving and setting up a shot and it worked. 47 #10's & #9's - WOW!

Now to get to my point. Sometimes it's luck.

I personally feel that 2 of my 3 ribbons were just that.
In the Macro IV, Once in a Blue Moon, DPC Album Cover, & Threes challenges, the competition was in my opinion, far better and my 18-22 placings were more of a personal best in many ways than 2 of my ribbons, simply because the competition was tough.

Sometimes it's just having a better luck in my opinion. Personally I would not have ranked many of my submissions as high as you all did.
Not that I am not grateful though...

I still have a great deal to learn from the Masters here, and feel honored to be able to compete against the best of the best.
Just keep clicking away - it's THE only way to improve, and get lucky!

Actually, I change my mind.
As someone reminded me in another thread, I have wanted a monthly free challenge EVERY month.
I don't think I'm alone on this one.

I'm excited now that there's one I can participate in.
I'm also excited at the thought of a challenge for people with 3 ribbons.

However, if I didn't have 3 ribbons, I'd be really p****d off, because I want a monthly free challenge every month!

So I think everybody should be allowed a monthly free study,
and people with 3 ribbons should have a seperate challenge, then I believe everyone will be happier.

So, there you go... someone with 3+ ribbons who thinks this is a bad idea.

I haven't been following this thread...but what if we win three ribbons within this month...will we be then eligible?

A dreadful idea anyway (not because I have none) but the term 'Masters'' is frankly demeaning to what I see as a whole wealth of talent on this site. Lose it - soon.

BradP, there's luck and then there's dumb luck. You may have encountered the former but the latter is neither your nor anyone else with 3 or more ribbons modus operandi.

Wow. Please accept my apologies -- I didn't expect so much negativty as a result of this.

Firstly, I had limited time to write the implementation for this, so my quick way of blocking submissions from users who don't have 3 ribbons was to just kill the page and print a friendly (or apparently not-so-friendly) error. The idea wasn't to hide the rules/description from people who didn't meet the requirement. In fact anyone could have read the description if they went to the challenge index page.

I feel bad about forgetting the quarterly free study challenge for September. This Masters' Challenge is IN NO WAY a replacement for that -- we honestly just forgot to schedule it and didn't feel that it would be a good idea to run two free study challenges simultaneously.

I've just lowered the requirement to two ribbons. From statistics that we ran last night, this opens the playing field to 100 "active" members. The previous count was only 64 members.

And just to make it clear, the idea isn't to exclude anyone -- the two people who originally pitched this idea to me have exactly zero ribbons -- the idea was to just get a challenge full of awesome shots and make it really fun to vote on.

This brings me to my last two points: Voting is open to everyone. And if you win your second ribbon before September 30th, you CAN submit.

=/

I would guess this view would get majority support from whoever has to decide.

By the way, the apostrophe should be after the plural: Masters'

K, maybe we should call it the 'People who have cameras that take really good pictures challenge'. Come on, it's a stinking title. Lighten up people.

Hmm.. maybe it shouldn't be called the "masters" challenge.. maybe we could change it to the "mobsters" challenge.. since most ribbon winning is the ability to produce an image that appeals to the mob :)

I haven't figured out how to do that yet.. (and probably won't, popularity escapes me at the best of times, but I didn't grow into who I am by being voted "most likely to be on GQ, heheh).

I agree with Brad P though, ribbon winning *IS* a heck of a lot of luck, being in the right place at the right time, and then finally having the ability to know what pleases a majority of people.

BobsterLobster put *MY* thoughts on monthly free challenges down perfectly, I can't add any more to it than that. A seperate free study for non-ribbon "masters" would be fair play.

That's all from me.. just wanted my 15 seconds :)

I want to add that I don't think there should be a 'seperate' free study for people with <2 ribbons... but that all members should have a free study. People with 2+ ribbons should then get a seperate challenge topic. There are many reasons for not having a challenge for people with <2 ribbons in another thread which advocated having a challenge for people without ribbons.

The term Masters is just a term.

Personally I feel honored (and lucky) to be included in this group. It is the efforts of this group that has lit the passion to excel.

Had I not, it would have just given me more ambition to get there,
not put me down for not being there.

For those that haven't been lucky enough to reach it, make it a goal, but don't feel put down by it!

I find this challenge awfully exciting. I'm not going to be able to participate, with just one ribbon. But I can't wait to see what these excellent photographers are going to produce, especially without the constraint of a topic. Voting is going to be a pleasure!
As for those who can't participate and are pissed off about it.. just go out and get some great pictures instead of fuming away on the forums... it's more fun! :)

Well.. that's pretty much what I meant.. seperate topic. (it amounts to a seperate challenge in the end anyway, it's all semantics.

hehe.. I'm not offended by it in the least. It really does make me want to improve and see if I can make it.. I just have this habit of having some really pedantic humor at times :)

Sorry, I didn't mean to be picky... just wanted to clarify.

First of all ignore the fact that I can enter with my ribbons.

Now, I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

Paying members being excluded? Well, not really, because they didnt pay so that they could enter this challenge. They paid expecting 2 challenges a week and the occasional speed challenge or free study. Nowhere officially did it say there was going to be an 1 month free study every 3 months, so this can't be a valid arguement.

Being elitist? Ribbon winners deserve some kind of a prize don't they? At the moment they get a few pixels on their profile page. This is just something extra to reward them with.
