My three:
BTW, should say that the photo that placed 3rd in this challenge was one of my top three picks, but it's already up! :)

The text below is from a biweekly email i get from Robert Genn, an artist who writes on art and art making. I thought this fit what we discussing earlier - what is the purpose of all these ribbons? I guess it's showing our own take on the four points below, sharing our eyes, and promoting those we feel aren't recognised. Why are there so many? Because we are all individuals. Even if we do have similar tastes in images, they aren't identical; we all treasure something personal that we apply to our view of art and the world. Mine? Richness of tone or colour, unexpectedness of composition, layers of possible meaning - from the innocent to the horrific, and the ability to stop me in my tracks, gasp, and cry. Many (including me) bandy about the term 'eye candy' in a vaguely pejorative manner. That's not exactly right, 'though. There is absolutely nothing wrong with beauty for beauty's sake - it's sweet, it brings a smile to one's face. Everyone, even the most dedicated 'dark' artist, produces pretty work as well. While it may not have the depth of other works, it soothes the soul and is a balm for the eyes. The other feeds the soul.
Originally posted by Robert Genn: After my last letter "Grabbing the heart," about people making their minds up in the blink of an eye, artists wrote to add their own take on "unusually satisfying pattern." We've
included some of these in the current clickback. See URL below. Many also wanted to know some of the other visual triggers on my list. Here are four:
Precious colour
Gradations big and small
Something personal
Something mysterious
Precious colour is only precious when it's set off by neutral tones, mainly greys. Straight-from-the-tube garish colour doesn't always cut it--colour needs absence of colour nearby to be truly delicious.
Gradations provide an interactive dimensional flip that teases the brain. Blends play with the sensibility of ordinary things and twist the mind to see art rather than either reality or artless play.
Something personal has to do with an artist's unique style--the mannerist touch an artist gives his work. This trigger works for those who have prior knowledge of an artist's style. Naming and labelling is basic to human nature--instant labelling is highly satisfying.
Something mysterious activates our sense of illusion and magic. To tell all is the key to yawns. Illusory art excites. To enable this trigger, an artist needs to stifle the natural tendency to fully disclose and describe. People suspend judgement in the presence of mystery.
The emotional brain readily and positively reads these and other indicators as they briefly but tenderly touch neural pleasure-points. There are other stimuli that quickly ring the neural bells. For example, some folks need to see detail, drama, romance or sentimentality. At the same time, others close their minds to bravura, style, non-objectivity or even certain subject matter. In the arts, as in commodity selection, decision making is a perverse combination of clear emotion and intellectual filtration. Accessing the mind at an emotional level happens in a blink of an eye and is a key to a warm glow that motivates. |

and the x-prizes go to...... ;~P
laurie241 beautiful colours, wonderful abstraction, just enough information to let us know the subject. the composition is fab, in fact the whole is that wonderful combination of surface beauty and brains that we see so seldom. a very satisfying work.
cfarrell the shiny chrome here is so good; the distortion, griminess, implicit (streaks on the bumper) and explicit (exhaust pipe) pollution. the tones are rich and deep, that sky is lovely, and the image makes one think as well.
skewsme another x-prize for skewsme - i promise, i just go by the lowest placings for my highest marks. as an ex-cycle courier, this image really resonates. the darkness, while criticised by many, epitomises the grimy reality of urban cycling, as does the face mask. i love the zooming composition, the texture of the wall, and the touch of red in the reflector.

wow - two post ribbons and a real ribbon in a week... thanks! :) now i get to have a dancing fairy on my profile!
I dont normally participate in this thread but i thought i would mention this shot which surprised me by not being at least in the top 10. Only one to mention as the other shots i voted on got what i believed they should in the end (although not necesarily what i voted):
I'm not sure why it scored relatively low... but for me it hit the nail on the head at a psychological level in its presentation, and i think that is really difficult to do in a photo. So i suppose this is a "lala" for Dan_Cottle ;)

Environmental Portrait - just a little late...
Well, it seems many voters actually agreed with me this time. that doesn't happen very often. so, again, my three lowest placing highest scores
AP so dark and smooth, so deep and blue. man, i like this one a lot.
daklein a lovely image, the forced perspective, the angles of his arms, the colours and textures, all just wonderful.
meshary_85 the night, red and black, the dirt and grime, arresting, voting, important stuff happening here. a lovely, deep and dark image.
