Biography: I am a mediocre photographer with far better equipment than I probably deserve. Well, OK, equipment that many others on here deserve more than I do and could put to much better use. Although, to say I'm a mediocre photographer is probably an insult to mediocre photographers everywhere, but I digress. :-)

I've been interested in photography for years but haven't had the time to pursue it (not that I have an abundance of time now) and no one close to me really shared the interest. As a consequence, the camera tended to gather dust for long periods of time. When my middle daughter (now 6, going on 30) was born I sparked back up and we have reams of photos and a well used N90 to show for it. A couple of years ago my (now 3 year old) son's arrival coincided nicely with the wide availability of the D70. I subsequently took TONS of digital pics of the kids. All of that made me pretty good at getting portrait type pics and a few candids of my kids but I pretty much stayed in that box. Not that I minded becoming the unofficial birthday party and pre-school event photographer, but it really didn't push me to be a better photographer.

A little over a year ago two things happened that pushed me into expanding my horizons: My D70 and lenses I'd accumulated over the years were stolen. I took the insurance money to buy a Nikon D200. Around the same time my then 16 year old daughter picked up my wife's point and shoot and showed astonishing ability with a camera. She saved all summer to buy a D70s and now I have a photo buddy.

I've really come to enjoy this site because it pushes me to move outside my comfort zone. Having someone else set an agenda for what to photograph forces me to think outside my box. I debated submitting for a long time because I am very competitive and didn't want to look like a moron posting up a bunch of lame photos. I recently decided that I don't care enough to let it stop me from having fun. Every time I see a score ratchet down a few tenths of a point it pushes me to do better next time.

I have a VERY busy life between work (as a network security consultant) and family commitments so I don't have time to prowl around with a camera as much as I'd like, nor do I have time to stage good shots. As a consequence, most of what I submit is not as good as I feel it should be. Until life calms down a bit it is what it is.

Like most here I have personal goals:

    - To continue trying new things (photographically, of course)
    - To leave twice as many comments as I receive
    - To participate in at least 12 challenges in 2009
    - To get my average score over 6
    - To score above a 7 Free Study 2007-12
    - To score above a 7 in a Free Study Free Study 2007-12
    - To get on the first page of challenge results Free Study 2007-12
    - To get any ribbon Free Study 2007-12
    - To get a blue ribbon

Not that I expect to accomplish any but the first couple in the near future but you need something to shoot for, right? OK, I stand corrected. I never expected to knock off so many of these in one shot. Like they say, I'd rather be lucky than good. :-)
