I thought I might try and make this a regular feature... the criteria is the photo that gets the lowest placing that I've given 8+ to.
This challenge, it belongs to The Essentials by jgal76, and it looks from the comments given during the challenge that quite a few people would agree with me.
It may not be a pretty picture, but it's one of the best uses of negative space this challenge.
Creativity v. technique is often talked about on this forum, and I think this photo is an example of a creative photo that could have benefited from more technique... but is still excellent in it's own right.

I didn't get to vote on this challenge, but I too thought this was a great interpretation of the challenge. The negative space was essential to bringing out the theme that TV + Beer = Everything He Needs. Had there been any less "nothing" around his focal point, it would have lost impact. Plus, it was just plain fun.

I'll play. :)

My most underrated photo was this one:

//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=33597

I gave it a 10 and expected it to hit the top 10.

I really thought it had a lot of story and the negative space was crucial to the shot. I guess a lot of people felt because it wasn't uniform it didn't count as negative space, but I thought the DOF handled that really well.

Absolutely agree - I gave this shot a much higher than average score and was surprised at its finish.

Doing same for Desolation I'd like to highlight these:

I gave this an 8 but I know there was some forum discussion about it at the time

This one got a 9 from me but was likewise discussed in the forums

Some voters didn't like seeing death and decay as the subject matter...

Another of my 8 votes is this one which came 135th

I gave this a 9 and was really surprised the decay and abandonment shown by that rich textured rust didn't appeal to more voters

Another of my 8s here...

This one is one of my two 10s and my very favourite in the challenge - it ranked only 48th

And neither this nor this nor this ranked much better, both 9s from me

This was my other 10 vote

I did have some other 8s and 9s but these were in the top 35.

I was one of the 3 10s... This shot suffered from 'speed voters'... It is certainly a prime exmple of using the negative space to tell a story.

Wow, thanks for the mention Bob. I wasn't expecting for this one to do too well, due to the harsh lighting and i didn't have time to reshoot it. I had originally wanted to do this shot on a hardwood floor, but all the rooms with hardwood in my house had a panelling that cut the room in half. I'm glad enjoyed my attempt and liked the shot.

Playing by your rules, here is my 'most underrated' shot in the challenge //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=33753 which I gave an 8.

Someone explain to me how the negative space in that shot is the wow. I'm not being sarcastic, I just don't get it.

My only 10 (if I would've voted) would have been this understaed shot.

This IS desolation to me.

How do you find that? Start at the end and go page by page?

I really liked koriyama's abstract shot, and it ended at 133rd! I think it's a really cool abstract. Very artistic.
Niten's Cedar Sunrise was my next lowest at 61st place. Just beautiful.

I agree that it fits the theme. Perhaps too well. Wanting to look at the image has a lot to do with how I vote. And those babies make me wanna close the screen =(

It's time for Katie's list of must underrated desolation submissions.

First of all, it doesn't take duotones to portray desolation.

While we're on this topic.. I would appreciate some feedback on mine.

I'm still confused,I guess, what actually makes negative space.

Thank you to those that have already commented. Including Bob... I'm learning alot,,.... but obviously have way more to go.

Too much TV, and too much beer,
equals too much negative space between the ear(s).

Damm, I am a poet.

I AM A CANADIAN!

Need more beer...hmmmmmmmmmmmm...beer
