I don't think I ever woke up to a 6 before. I'm sure my suckiness will come through in the end, but thought I'd share while I could...

Dang, woman! That's downright scary! :-)
I have scores off. My first and only comment on my neon is not complimentary. It in fact says (in so many words) that it indeed sucks. |

I'm sure it's a fluke. It will probably hit 4.5 around 50 voters or so... LOL.

Well crap. I turned on scores. Why did I do that?

I was surprised, because someone said it looked overexposed, and I took great pains to ensure that this shot looked perfect on my LCD. In fact, it's two raw negatives from the same shot combined at different exposure values, one for most of the shot and another for the house in the background and some of the wall.
On my main PC, the front of the wall is pretty dark green, the leaves are pretty dark green, and only the back part of the wall (beyond the two tree trunks) is approaching lighter limey green colours.
Then I viewed this shot on my uncalibrated laptop yesterday and it did look over-exposed.
So, team-suckians, does this photo look bright, or moodily dark with a glint of light in a few places (eg dark tree trunks with splashes of light on them).
So difficult to explain colours in terms of lightness :/ |
David,
This looks a bit washed out to me on a calibrated LCD screen. Does the original look the same? Tomorrow I will check on my work laptop which is not calibrated.

To Juli, regarding the stars on the capitol shot - it's the capitol of Texas, and that's the fence that surrounds the capitol grounds in the foreground. It's a lovely location! Thanks for your nice words!
By the way, Suckees, darn fine collection of shots Mary posted for us, if you ask me!
And David, on my laptop monitor, it does look a bit washed out. I suspect on my real monitor (on the slow boat to Germany) it would look much richer. I have this same problem I suspect - I edit on my real monitor. I think I'd best check them from now on on the laptop. The problem with that is then they look too dark on my other monitor! Oh well!
And Kelli - you rock! Thanks for all the comments! Yes, Sir Thomas and Miss Emma are going with me - we're headed to the vet this morning (don't tell them) to get their checkup and "health certificates" so they can fly. They probably aren't going to like the flying part...
And yes, the Volkswagen looked real - just sawed in half. I didn't walk up into their yard to check, though, but from where I stood to take the pick it looked real!

That's good to know. Maybe I should get one of those calibration thingies.
I'll see if I can dig up the original. |

It also looks washed out on my calibrated desktop monitor.

On my laptop, it looks a bit washed out. The house in the background has no color at all, and the landscape behind the house is very pale.
One of the things with my laptop monitor is that I have to be very careful about the angle of the screen. Tilted back, everything is darker, and forward everything is paler. Regardless of the angle of the screen, this shot still lacks punch.
I find that adjusting exposure (offset and gamma) a tiny bit often helps a shot like this pop. |

It looks good to me but I may be messed up too. I gave you a 6- liked the shot.

Hopefully, I can for once hang onto that elusive 6. It would be a first for me.

That's the thing, I did adjust them - on my normal screen it looks spot-on (IMO). On the laptop (which I only checked the other day) it is washed out, but I assumed that the laptop was "wrong".

Actually I like it too, just the way it is. I gave you a 7.

Yaay. :)
I like the shot, just wondering if the thing that I'm seeing is not quite what other people are seeing. |

Believe it or not, this is better than I expected. And I got a very positive comment from Ivory. I'll calculate winners this afternoon. For now, I have to obsessively page through the results of 3 challenges. I, too, think we had some great pictures this week!

Now I wonder about my monitor.
When you get a chance would you look at this?
On my monitor, the window frames are light and there is detail (horizontal lines) in the bottom row.
On your monitor, is this light or dark? Are you able to see the horizontal lines in the bottom row?
Thanks.

Only if I look very closely at the screen can I see the lines. They are there, but not obvious from my normal viewing distance. |

On my laptop, the window frames are medium, not light or dark, and I can see the blinds (horizontal lines) in the lower row, but I had to work with the angle of my screen to bring them into view. I wouldn't have noticed them if you hadn't asked. |

I can see the horizontal lines in the bottom row. The window frames are light. Looks like your calibration is fine.
