The originally-posted image, by Gibun, is world-class. So is this one:
In my opinion, of course...

I'm really glad so many people have responded to this post as candid are just such a classic piece of photography.
The next one want to share is from the Master himself.
What I really find unbelievable with this one is only three of us have it as a favorite.

For a shot to be a candid, the subject isn't supposed to be aware you are taking the pic, right? Or am I off base and a little confused as I seem to be lately? |

A definition that I pulled up is "Not posed or rehearsed" and I think that that covers it well. The shot can be candid and the person can be aware but usually candid shots do not incorperate the photographer telling the model what to do or how to act.

Wow. This is like a thread of all my favorite photos. I guess this is a wake up call for me that candids are just my thing. I am always drawn to them so much more than model or studio shots, plus any scene, be it landscape or architecture, can benefit from the reality that a person adds to it.
anyway, i gotta run but i'll be back later to check out all the photos again and add some of my favorites as well.
oh and my personal view of candids (which i am sure isn't the technical definition or the view of anyone else) is that they are not posed or rehearsed like tranquil said but also that they are of people you do not know (and whether or not they notice you taking their photo doesn't make a difference, unless it makes them totally stop what they were doing that made you take a photo of them). |

Indeed - an excellent thread with some superb shots. A proper feast in fact.
Here are some from my faves list (or at least the ones that people haven't already deservedly featured):
... and just about every one of my own!
Edit: thanks Tranquil, and - just one more:

There are some brilliant shots in this thread. I wish I had time to look through them all - late night, slow dial-up :(
My favourite of my own candids
I don't usually have the courage to get this close.
