Not sure how well this met the challenge, but the shot itself is very well done. His expression is great. I like that he has a hint of a smile, not just a sorrowful "pity me" sort of look. I like the focus on his eye, the tones and the composition. Well done.

Excellent composition here good lighting and detail. Your problem as you have stated yourself is it is very weak in saying poverty. There just isn't enough here to know that it is a poverty stricken area or child.

I will though again say excellent composition...just stay closer to the theme of the challenge.

Sorry about this...I probably should have ewntered this into Free Study. Unfortunately, I was blind to realize that the story could not really be read just by the photograph alone. I thought it would have been alright for the viewer to draw their own conclusions. The hope here has to do with hte neglegent family that I got into a conversation with him about after meeting him in the projects of the town that I live in. When I told him about DPC and about what I wanted to take his photo for; he became intrigued and he said he always loved photography. I let him try out my camera and he was so amazed. He said that whenever he went to his friends' houses, that they would have their parents get him a disposable camera and that he'd take it home and hide it and use it and his friends would then develop it. This story really hit me pretty deep. He had a tough life, but he still enjoyed life's comfort. This is why I was comfortable in using this photograph for poverty. Poverty does not always need to mean poor and sad and unkempt and disgruntled, to me and to Kojo it meant something a little bit different. Hope this helps...

Great Photo, the balance and lighting are very good.
What stops me rating very high is that it does not sufficiently portray poverty for me, he looks more happy than hope...

I really like the composition and controlled DOF on this shot. The catchlight is also a nice touch. How it speaks to poverty I don't quite understand, but it is a gorgeous portrait. [7]

The connection with the topic Poverty is not that clear, but it is a very good portrait.

Great shot!! The lighting is wonderful! I would've never thought to crop it like that and it makes the picture even more interesting and emotional.

great capture! most people think of poverty as being poor and miserable, when it is really an economic term. i like this image because it conveys the basic strength of the human spirit. just wish you had focused on the nose instead of the eye...all the same, one of my top picks for the challenge. good luck!

What is it about this picture that say's poverty? All I see is a young black kid and I can't possible know his story from the photograph. I do think it's a very good photo in it's own right.

This a an exquisite portrait, but I find that the image hits me with just the opposite of poverty. To me, this young man appears rich - in health, youth, strength and hope.

Your photo is a fantastic portrait.
I like the way you showed a portion of his face rather than the whole thing.
It's top-notch in every respect except that... (IMO) it doesn't show poverty.

Now this a beautifully done portrait, great lighting, great expression, nice composition. All this said, it does not show poverty, it shows a happy person. I'm torn here. This would have been a 10 in a free study or portrait or people challenge.

Great close up. I would have liked to see a bit more cropped off the right side, so as not to see the shadow of the eye socket.
