42 day till the signup period closes
I hope everyone that has participated in the 2008 season of the Free Study Marathon has had a good time and enjoyed the side challenge. I can’t believe that it’s already time for members to start signing up for the 2009 season but it has arrived. I will try to outline a few things below about the third-Annual FSM (yes you head right, this will be the FSM’s third yearâ€Â¦wow!).
1. Signup Period: October 1st, 2008 – December 31st, 2008.
Signup Period ends at midnight ET. All times are in union with DPC server time.
2. To signup all you have to do is send a PM to me dated within the signup period acknowledging that you wish to participate in the 2009 season. No request will be approved after the closing of the signup period.
3. You will receive a confirmation email letting you know that I have received your request. Member will usually receive their confirmation email with a couple of hours but it may take longer. If you do not receive a confirmation within 24 hours please resubmit your request.
4. It is the members responsibility to inform me if they have a username change between the times they signup and the end of the 2009 FSM. Failure to do so could result in a ‘No Score’ from the time the user changes their username and the time I am informed. I will not be able to go back and change any points or scores due to a member not informing me of his/her username change.
5. The points system that is currently in place will remain the same for the 2009 season along will the rules. I will post a FAQ sheet soon so everyone can view the FSM rules. Also there will be no virtual ribbons handed out to the winner of the 2009 FSM, instead there will be a prize. You will hear more about that in this thread, so keep an eye out. You may want to bookmark this thread or put it in your watch threads.
For now that̢۪s about it. If you have any questions feel free to post in this thread. Congratulations to all that are doing well in the 2008 season and hope we have a record amount of members participate in the 2009 FSM.
Thanks,
Scott
If you do not see your username listed below and you have signed up for the 2009 FSM or if you haven't signed up and would like to do so, please send me a PM.

I'm in!
I don't have a snowball's chance at any accolades, but this contest forces me to get out there and reach to be a better photographer.
Thanks Scott, for all your hard work to keep this as a regular happening.

sent you a pm.
i personally don't like the idea of giving out a "real" prize for the winner. that could result in some "dirty" competition including trying to influence your own and others scores, which imo is not only against the rules but also destroying the spirit of this site. i mean if it's just something like a dpc hat that's fine of course...;)

I'm in for 2009, but it's a long way until December, I hope you bump this a little closer to January, or can you do a group PM to the participants....about mid December, before everyone is overcome by Christmas cheer, Christmas Holidays, New Year Resolutions, or Old Timers Disease. :D

As of this post everyone that has sent me a PM requesting to participate in the 2009 Free Study Marathon should have received the email conformation. If you have not received your confirmation please resend your request.
If you have not sign up for the 2009 FSM and want to participate please send me a PM.
Thanks.
NOTE: I want everyone to know that the Free Study Marathon (FSM) is open to any member that wants to participate. The FSM is designed to keep you motivated using friendly competition. |

Thanks to all that has signed up so far.
Reminder that sign up will be open till Dec 31st, 2008 - midnight (DPC server time).
If you have not signed up yet and want to or thinking of participating in the 2009FSM you will have to sign up before the closing of the sign up period. If you are undecided at this time please put this thread on your watch list or bookmark it. I have bumped it several times but don't want to wear out it's welcome. So I will only bump around the 1st and 15th of each month until the sign up period closes. Please keep in mind I can not add anyone after Dec. 31st.
If anyone has any questions feel free to post to this thread anytime. I along with other users that are familiar with the FSM will be glad to answer any questions. I'm just limiting my bumps to this thread.
Thanks everyone,
Scott |

I think that it's an reasonably valid concern.
I also don't really like the idea of an actual prize at a base level, and would like to know more about it before I put my name in. |

I was planning on shipping the winner a 2009 FSM champion ball cap. Only one will be made and it will go to the top person. But I want to do what the majority of the members want. So if people feel that could pose a problem then we can scratch that idea. After all this is for fun and learning.
I'm open for suggestions.
Thanks for your input.
Scott

And the repeated lesson is "you will never please everyone".

I think the ball cap is a great idea. A unique one of a kind thing that I will never win! lmao
I will however have just as much fun (and self aggravation) as I did this year. The FSM is a great way to remind people to keep shooting and get outside of their comfort zone occasionally. :)
Thanks for using so much of your time to do this again for another year Scott.

Ditto. Scott, the FSM is your baby. If you want to award a silver coated plunger that the first loser second place finisher has to wear then by all mean make it so. *psst* what about the person who finishes the highest missing a month? :P

I thank everyone of you for thanking me in your PM's and in this thread for the FSM. But I would like to take a moment to thank everyone of you that participate. See you think I'm doing this for others and while that is true I'm also doing it for myself. I have a few obstacles in my life right now that I WILL overcome. But while they are there keeping me from participating in a lot of challenges I get to see the world through your lens, your passion, your motivation, and your love of photography.
I'm try to look at every participants entry closely. Sure I may miss a few but I try. I study each and everyone of your photographs and in turn I learn and get to see the a world that otherwise I would not be able to see. So from me to you, THANK YOU, your participation drives me to do this each year. And one day, when I have overcome my obstacles I will have a wealth of knowledge that you have tough me and I will be a true photographer and be able to proudly say, "I was taught by a global community that came together to teach each other what they knew about photograph; I have them to thank".
So thanks everyone,
Scott. |

While that's certainly true to a certain extent, the worry is more that if he offered something of real value, then it might honestly put some people in the mood to cheat a little more.
A baseball cap, however, certainly doesn't fall into this category. |
