It's been my experience that a lot of comments means either very good image, or very bad. I don't have scores on but I can pretty well judge how my image is doing just by the number of comments. My most recent was the "Bad" challenge which only got one comment, and that was on the last day. I had it pegged for mid to low 5's and that is just where it finished.
It's easier to comment on really bad images because there are obvious flaws to comment on. Really good photos get a lot of praise comments, but not much really useful from an improvement POV. The middle ones are harder (at least for me) because the difference between them and a really good image can be very subtle. Sometimes all I know is that it doesn't work - not really knowing what, exactly, to change. Plus I think a lot of people blow past the middle of the road ones pretty quickly - did it grab you or not? If yes, positively or negatively, comment. If no, vote 5(or 6 or 4) and move along.

2.4 difference.

I notice that where there's definite flaws that some are commenting on there's not as much difference. When it's a shot that just strikes a chord in a few, resulting in their saying so, that's where it has a big effect.

13 comments. 4 were after the voting, so those don't count in your avg.

Still... that's quite a difference!

Differential between commenters and non-commenters - 3.1

Those that stopped to look actually saw the image - a reflection of a piano in the bell of another instrument. Those that didn't comment, just saw a peculiar abstract that looked 'noisy' - the noise was the texture of the instrument that was doing the reflecting.

I have learned - on DPC, you need to hit voters over the head sometimes.

what an interesting re-visit...

this was surprising to me that this image had the highest differential for me--over 2.5

Avg (all users): 6.0123
Avg (commenters): 8.5385

equally surprising were the number of entries with 2.0+ differentials

although this is one of MANY with 1.5 pt differential or less, it does represent my highest score by commenters

Avg (all users): 7.5024
Avg (commenters): 9.1600

sometimes you connect, sometimes you don't. i agree with the point that you can pretty much gauge how you're doing in a challenge by the number of comments you get, but for me, it's that Avg (commenters) score that really lets me know how i did.
