Zen Flesh, Zen Bones

Lovely title for this thread.......
The book w/ the same name by Paul Reps & Nyogen Senzaki was my introduction to Zen in 1966. As a Far Eastern History student, I found the compilation at a college book store on a poetry shelf among some "beat" writer's works including Allen Ginsberg & Jack Kerouac. The book is a interesting English introduction to the great tradition of Zen awareness, however by Reps own admission - some distance from traditional koan study, in that he followed his own Zen. The book is well worth reading as it will whet the appetite for more.

It can be found here:

While I'm still trying to draft description for challenge on "Zen Photography", I'm bumping this one with few more finds on DPC -

Also found this one -

Before you study Zen,
mountains are mountains and rivers are rivers;
while you are studying Zen,
mountains are no longer mountains and rivers are no longer rivers;
but once you have had enlightenment
mountains are once again mountains and rivers again rivers.

Its about coming full cirle (maybe thats why Zen is represented as circle in work of art). How true it is even if I replace Zen with Photography (technical side of it) ...

According to dictionary.com:

[Zen P Pronunciation Key (zn) n.
A school of Mahayana Buddhism that asserts that enlightenment can be attained through meditation, self-contemplation, and intuition rather than through faith and devotion and that is practiced mainly in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Also called Zen Buddhism.]

Wow. That was intense. I have never been able to find my style (see my entries). I do like simple pictures. (I also like witty pictures.) I just thought it was simplicity, but it's more than that. It's this zen style. I'll need to do more research, but thanks for pointing this style out.
this is great, too

I'd say so, yes. Especially the first image in each row :-)

From Theodore Roethke's "The Far Field":

IV

The lost self changes,
Turning toward the sea,
A sea-shape turning around, --
An old man with his feet before the fire,
In robes of green, in garments of adieu.
A man faced with his own immensity
Wakes all the waves, all their loose wandering fire.
The murmur of the absolute, the why
Of being born falls on his naked ears.
His spirit moves like monumental wind
That gentles on a sunny blue plateau.
He is the end of things, the final man.

All finite things reveal infinitude:
The mountain with its singular bright shade
Like the blue shine on freshly frozen snow,
The after-light upon ice-burdened pines;
Odor of basswood on a mountain-slope,
A scent beloved of bees;
Silence of water above a sunken tree :
The pure serene of memory in one man, --
A ripple widening from a single stone
Winding around the waters of the world.

Reading this thread is a Zen moment in itself. Here is another beautiful (and Simple) one -

Ten thousand flowers in spring
the moon in autumn,
a cool breeze in summer,
snow in winter.
If your mind is not clouded by unnecessary things,
this is the best season of your life.

Thanks Robert for pointing us to Miksang. Its beautiful. Its Zen.

Anyway, I think I found out the best defination of Zen which does not limit it in any way. It simply is - "This is it."

Also, Bear posted the description for Zen Photography challenge on this thread.. Hope to see a challenge which is pure bliss :)

I don't know :( But finally we have description (if not defination) for Zen Photography Challenge. See if it fits with the description.

Make an image that whispers serenity, simplicity, harmony: make an image as silent as can be
