Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Burst of Color (Advanced Editing IV)
Collection: 2006
Camera: Nikon D70
Lens: Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Nikon
Location: Trail, BC
Date: Jan 4, 2006
Aperture: f2.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/80 sec
Galleries: Still Life, Studio
Date Uploaded: Jan 4, 2006

Setup: Covered bright north facing window (lots of snow outside reflecting light) with a colourful transparent fabric. Placed flower/vase in front. Made image from 3/4 side. No other light source (daytime, so room was relatively light).

Camera settings: Aperture priority, w/b cloudy -3, F2.8, ISO 200, 1/80 sec, handheld.

Post processing:
- Rotated, straightened a bit, cropped.
- Adjusted histogram.
- Created copy layer, lightened second layer with curves, blurred slightly and blended with original in soft light. Merged layers.
- Created another copy layer and applied clarify. Deleted portions of top layer.
- Resized, sharpened.
- Created another layer, ran top layer through noise reduction, then deleted flower and vase portions.

-------------

NOTES: I think the picture would have been better if I'd used a slightly smaller aperture (maybe F4) to keep more of the flower (especially front petals) in focus while keeping the background blurred.

Very nice image! Love the colors. The seam in the vase is a bit distracting, but it's a minor concern when compared to the whole. Congrats!

VERY NICE!!! Wonderful color, lighting & DOF control. Only thing I see that detracts is the parting line on the vase. A few degrees' rotation (clockwise, of the vase, alone) would have solved this. Otherwise, SUPERB!

I think that we have a winner. I really like the DoF, and the vibrant colors are very well done. The only things that might improve the image would be to change the light green blur in the lower right quadrant (by shifting the hue or desaturating it) and possibly adding a stronger reflection on the glass to add to the depth. This image is clearly worthy of being sold as stock at one of the higher-end agencies like Alamy.

Nice DoF... crisp image. I like you off center composition and having it face into, rather then out of, the frame. I love the color combination you chose. I am being distracted by the blurred elements in the background, however, and feel it keeps pulling my attention away from the subject.

We all get tired of the same flower shots, but this one stands out to me and seems unique. The use of primary colors, angled flower, shiny vase, and great use of the shallow dof all help to make this shot work really well. One of my top picks for this challenge. Well done!
