For those of you who don't keep track of the bike riding mileage thread (that would be all of you except JerseyGenie), I thought I'd post my story of today's ride here, too, simply because it is a bit amusing and I like to share. Though I did carry my camera, after all this adventure I didn't take any pictures. Silly me!

Ahem. How to get more miles than you intended... It's really very simple. Forget your wallet. I need my riding buddy from Texas here - we always went through a quick checklist for each other to make sure we didn't forget anything: bike (no kidding), helmet, gloves, water, ID, cell phone... Had I gotten to "ID", I'd have realized I didn't pack my little ziplock baggie with an ID, some cash, and a credit card. I didn't have a cell phone either, but that's because I don't own one here. (I do have work-issued Crackberry I could carry, I suppose.)

Anyway, my goal was to ride to Rüdesheim (I remembered the "u umlaut" code! - it's alt0252 if you're interested) by way of the R3 then winging it when the R3 turned off. So I head off. Pavement of sorts for the first 5 or 6 miles, then dirt, sand, gravel, sharp little rocks, sharp big rocks, you name it. Very adventurous, and not something you'd take Celeste on, Steve. But after a few corrections, I did indeed make it Rüdesheim. Nice! 25 miles to get there which is about what I'd planned on. I saw a sign for a WC (water closet) so headed there - needed 20 cents, which is fine, but..... Doh!! That's when the lightbulb went off. I had no money! That also meant no cappucino, by the way. Serious bummer. So I figured I'd take the train to Eltville - two cities back - and ride home from there, and seriously hope they didn't check for tickets. On the shorter trains, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Well, they did. But the nice young men who were also carting bikes on the train, who were from Russia (and the Ukraine) and spoke German and English, helped me translate the "I have no wallet" part to the ticket lady. She let me get off at Eltville. Very nice of her, because there's something like a 40 Euro fine (close to a hundred thousand dollars given the conversion rate these days) if you get caught riding the train without a karte (ticket).

From Eltville to home I took the roadways this time and added another 13 miles to my day. I think I'll go take a nap now...

Remember, kids, when you go out on a ride, take your ID and some cash!! (And someone kindly remind me to do the same!)

wow...he's spiffed up his site since I last visited it. The bus project photos appear to be less accessible here, only glimpsed in video format, unless I've missed them elsewhere somehow...but the narration for the video includes some extra details that I don't recall making it into the book.

Ok, I think I served my penance for momentary laps of sucking . I hope the comments where enjoyed, even though I found little to be critical about, most I would have liked to take myself. Sorry it took so long, but I am a hunt and peck typist, and well you know âlifeâ.
Anyway, Iâm in for color, and landscape. Color will be hammered, but Iâm right, and they will be wrong..
Landscape, well, I have no idea which way that will go.
Good luck on all your entrees..

Thanks for a wonderful comment on my Success shot, it is appreciated. :)

I've been a traveler this summer and taking lots of "snap shots". Deb thanks for the help with RAW what a good mind to pick. Though forgetting ID, camera and money is something that you will only do once.

LOL! Probably not - I'll forget that I forgot and do it again... The most annoying aspect (other than fearing I'd get hauled into jail for hopping the train) was that I couldn't get my "hey, I made it here!" celebratory cappucino. Oh, and do post some of the "snapshots" in your portfolio - I tend to think that it's a very valid category of photography and enjoy wandering through other people's vacations that way.

I'm in for colour too and I'm also right, although probably not as right as you. My landscape entrée is likely to start an epidemic of agoraphobia. Heh.

Thanks for your comment, the Raggle Taggle Gypsy has taken the fifth, not to mention the other three quarters.

I've got a shot in the Free Study that's sitting at a 4.9. 5 comments, all of them positive. Go figure :)

In other news though - I just had a little anniversary with my camera - this is the 20,000th photo ever taken with it!

I've had it since the 25th May last year, and was slightly shocked to realise that means I've been taking an average of 50 photos a day during that time! :)

Wow! I'm lucky to get 50 shots a month anymore!

I spent this long weekend barefoot and in the kitchen making tamales. Chicago has a fireworks show twice a week throughout the summer, so I don't feel too bad about not getting pictures from the big shows on the 3rd and 4th.

So I'm in for Point of Color.

I'm fairly sure that it'll get clobbered, but I do like it, I really think it's a good example of the spirit of what the challenge details were trying to achieve, so in spite of the thread of the same name, I went with my heart.

High 4/low 5 is what I'm predicting......8>)

Wow! You made me curious so I checked and found out that this [thumb]696114[/thumb] is the 10,000th shot taken with my D200, which I think I bought just less than a year ago. I shoot a lot during summer, and on June 7th was only at 6404 and today I am at about 10604! Now only if I had time to edit all those shots.

Green Lights are hanging in the results thread, where Doyle and colorcarnival led TS scoring. Congrats to colorcarnival for getting 3rd overall, and just missing getting a 7 for her lightbulb.
07/07/2008 12:12:26 AM · #1117
Thanks! I guess it was not light bulby enough to get past a 7. I saw quite a few that I liked better than mine so I am surprised by the ribbon. yay!

Might I suggest we all shoot for next week's challenge in portrait orientation? Just to be on the safe side. :-)

And I have to document this:

My 10,000th was indeed a lemur picture :)

And yeah, I've just sort of accepted the fact most of those pictures will never be edited... Shame, but there's so many new pictures to shoot all the time :)

LOL!!! Very apropos that your 10,000th was a lemur. :-)

And how is Cambridge these days?

I think I missed the point of the current challenge - hovering between 5.0 and 5.2. Not too bothered as it was something a bit different for me, and I quite like it - certainly not one will be embarassed by, at any rate.

I had a most incredible morning this morning! After spending the entire month of june shooting nothing but action photos (mostly waterski shots, but at least I was getting paid!) I finally got back to nature. I am not a morning person by any stretch, but I was up and out of my apt. at 4:30am this morning. A 40 minute drive to my sister's house on the lake, and I was on the water in my kayak but 5:15am! This lake is beautiful. It is on the very edge of the Canadian Shield, so it is a fairly deep lake with lots of giant rock islands. (rocks that are almost as old as the earth itself)

The water was still and reflected like glass, and I got to watch the sun rise up over the islands. It was so peaceful and fulfilling it is hard to describe. I took a bunch of photos, some of which are actually not half bad. Most importantly there was not a single human being in any of them! Even when my nifty new 18-55 VR lens I bought a few weeks ago crapped out on me, it still did not spoil my mood. (it is making a nasty grinding noise and focusing very slowly... it will be going back)

Have a great day everyone! ( I am going back to bed...)
