Jeb, it scares me that a nice guy with such a great nickname would make a blanket statement that is totally not true!

I have previously owned the D70s that you do, and now own a D200. Both of these cameras have average noise issues when compared with the Canon counterparts of their day.

However the new Nikons, the D300, the D3 and the D700 (coming very soon, another full frame camera but way smaller than the D3, and half the price) all have been tested and proven to have the lowest noise in any known dslr! They are literally blowing canon out of the water for low noise. (dpreview states that the d300 is "totally usable at iso 3200, and at iso 6400 is usuable for small output)

So please Jeb my friend, do not make blanket statements about Nikon. :)

ETA: the most important thing with noise is not to underexpose your image. if you do that and then try to adjust afterwords in PS you will be in trouble. This is true of all cameras, not just Nikon. If you expose properly, noise will not be an issue if you shoot at iso 800 or less.

The FS has been a strange one - at 25 votes it was at 5.21; I have never seen one go up like that!

I guess this will just boil down to opinions, but this is pretty much what I was referring to in my earlier post.

Had you read my post fully, you would have noticed that I spoke of the balance between noise and exposure.

I really find it hard to believe that you're unwilling to concede, especially with the D70s, the blatant noise issue of the Nikon vs their Canon counterparts.

I ran into marque blindness for years with car people, and although it doesn't altogether surprise me to see it in camera enthusiasts, it isn't any more palatable.

This image was taken @1000 ISO.....[thumb]602552[/thumb]

Pretty much proof that you CAN get good images at higher ISOs, but that doesn't mean that the inherent issues of the processor aren't still there.

I'd rather acknowledge an issue, accept it, and work within the parameters than just live in denial.

Feel free to chalk me up as an idiot if you like.

Easy there boys! c'mon, no butting heads over such a little issue.

My Canon produces noise at even ISO 80.

My Nikon thus far has NOT produced noise even at ISO800. Look at the shot of my Games, where my nieces were bouncing on the trampoline caught them at ISO 640 I believe, no noise or blur or nothin'.

It downloaded fairly quickly on our broadband (I believe it's 13MB) and it works just spiffy.

I haven't played with it a lot, but for free it's a GREAT price.

It's a Google download and I am pleased even though I haven't a clue how to really use it.....I have edited about a dozen shots and it seems to work great.

I have *ZERO* familiarity with anything other than CS2, so I started at the bottom of the curve to learn.

I like Picasa for quick and dirty small stuff (event slideshows for websites, f'er instance, or my animal shelter web pix), but be careful with anything where you really care about color and such. If I compare a RAW shot I ran through Picasa vs. one I edited only through PhotoImpact (my editor of choice) I find big differences in color, often a yellow cast to the Picasa stuff no matter what white balance I shot at. A word to the wise ;-)

Ah, Jeb is a great guy, and we are each entitled to our opinion. I just wanted to make sure his opinion was not the only one voiced.

No problems here. :)

Yeah, Terry.....you tryin' to start sumpin'????.......8>)

It just seems to me that I've had issues that are consistent with what I've read, heard, and seen.....YMMV

I think we'd *all* agree that the camera doesn't make the photographer.......8>)

I don't think any of you should be allowed to voice your opinions. I didn't get where I am today by having an opinion. Oh, yes, I did. I didn't get where I am today by listening to other people's opinions.
I'm getting a brand new Nikananon super K-one-one-seven and it has no noise, no dust, autofocus and armour plating and it goes back and recreates the scene if you miss a shot. It also has a giga-pixel in every pixel and the whole thing fits snugly - I mean *snugly* - into the back pocket of the designer jeans that look like they're sprayed on to the bevy of Nubian bearers that come with the deal. You guys is amachers.

Just submit photos of young naked women and no one will care how noisy the photos are.

*scratching head* I'm confused...does this mean the Nubian bearers wear the jeans and carry the camera too? And how many bearers do you need? I think I only have room for four.

They're not for needing. The jeans are removable. You can command them to go away until such time as you wish to employ them.

for once, this is a tanking i'm not sure i get. ok, maybe i do, but, hell, technically it's a good pic. no blur, no grain, good composition, well exposed, subject with a story, tack sharp (one commenter said it was oversharpened - not a sharpened pixel in the whole thing). gah. o well. the other tank (even less that this one) i get, it's not that great a shot.

they just don't appreciate my brilliance...;~P

Well, DUH!!!!

You're an acquired and learned taste.

I didn't get about half your stuff 'til I learned a little bit more who you are.

I still don't get all of it, but I also get some interesting and eclectic views I may not have noticed before I met you.

And that's a goooooooood thing........8>)

If it stays where it is, it'll knock my Regal kitty shot off my profile page.

That sucks!!!

I so love my Pet Portrait shot, and I really thought that this FS image was a sure-fire low 4.

I will NEVER understand the voters! LOL!!!

I wouldn't say you mould my view........I'd more lichen it to a revelation.....8>)

Yes, your take on the world around you, and your style of conveying it has enlarged my world.

Don has done that a lot, too.

I feel as though I know him better than I ever did, yet all that has done is to pique my curiosity as to how his strange mind works.

Now Peter.......????????
