That looks like a monopod. I think I'll still try out the string idea. Carrying around a tripod all day is for the birds.
Last time we had a DC meet, I attempted to set my tripod up to get a shot, and we were approached by capitol police telling us we couldn't do that.
Thanks to Tuckersmom, I have an IS lens.

in the botanical gardens you have to get a permit which takes about a minute to get.
That shot I took was taken while Ford was laying in state and the Capital Police were all over the place and never said a word to us.
I thought all of the reflecting pond and the parking lot were all a part of the Capital grounds..

Daily bump to remind folks to PM me to RSVP so I can plan dinner.
Oops - also, please tell me which group you expect to join at the beginning so we know how many to look for.
Thanks!

I am going to join the zoo crew in the morning, so if anyone wants to stash gear in my van whilst walking around the zoo, or during the afternoon while we do whatever else it is we're going to do, just let me know. That way if you don't want to lug aroud a tripod till after dinner you don't have to. |

The area you got that shot from might be considered Capitol Grounds "technically" but as you say you won't be bothered there. Try taking that tripod up on the other side of the pond and setup in the west lawn of the Capitol and see what happens though. ;-)

I wish I could Jeffrey, I just don't think I'll make that decision until the morning of, while driving down. If I hit the wrong red light or our lovely DC Saturday morning rush hour, my destination could change at the snap of a finger, LOL! |

My plans:
* Get up 5:00am.
* Drive to East Falls Church Metro lot & park (that's the one next to your house, right levyj123?
* Take metro into DC and meet up with Zoo crowd. I might be a little late (it's a 3+ hour drive to get to the metro station), but if I have someone's cell phone number I can catch up. (I'll PM you levyj123, since you're leading that group.)
* Do the lunch & split off with one of the afternoon groups.
* BBQ dinner.
* Night shoot until I just can't stay awake any longer.
* Take the last train back to the metro station and drive back home and collapse.
;-) I'm looking forward to seeing you all there! |

You won't be home to watch it anyway. Have them deliver Monday...priority. What do they think they're doing messing with your social life?!?
(But tell them you've been called in to "work" on Saturday...so you can't be there.)
Say! Maverick! Could you come "work" with us on Saturday? <<--There. You've been officially called....out.
(Alternatively, perhaps you could buy the neighbor a 6-pack of something to wait for the tv...) |

I have a spare room if it's not too late for you with the hotel. And you can ride in with me for the morning to the metro. I'll PM you.
I think I'll be going to "the mall" |

Ohhhh, baby! Did we pick a good day. It's supposed to be in the low 80s and low humidity tomorrow, which means a gorgeous day to be outside AND it should be a nice, clear, non-hazy sky at night.
Remember your sunscreen!

I thought about taking the train from NYC and joining you, but I seriously have too much to do this weekend at home. I'd put it off for the following weekend, but that Friday I'm having some medical stuff done and will need that weekend to recover.
Anyway, I'll be thinking of you and looking forward to your stories and photos.

I'm going to the Botanical Gardens! I hope I get there on time. For me to be in DC by 9:00, means leaving home around 6:00, which means getting up at 5:30. Wish me luck! |

I've got a couple more PMs (with my cell #) to send out so if you want a contact #, PM me soon.
It seems the weather will be exceptional - thank God for miracles!
Typically I park at around 1st and C, NW. There seems to always be spaces available and they are free on Saturdays.
If you are in the area, look for the strange woman with long, orange hair. That'll be me. Just a note, I HATE having my picture taken. You can sneak in all the pics you want, but do not expect me to pose for one or not hide my face when I see you aiming a camera at me. I'm behind the lens for a reason! :)
I will have bottled water, an ac outlet, storage space, etc. if anyone needs it.
Looking forward to meeting new people and seeing old friends tomorrow! |

Looks like I will be there at the Zoo. Not sure how long I will hang with the group because it is a family outing, but it will be nice to finally meet some of you.
BTW, I didn't tear my ACL... I tore my ACL, MCL and meniscus... AKA the unhappy triad. So, if you see a guy limping around with two little kids and a blonde wife... THAT's ME!

I'm still not sure of my exact plans.....now my little girl is sick and may not make it.
I am going to try to get them to come and we'll start at the zoo.....I hope.
If someone could PM me a cell number, I won't push the girls if they're not feeling well.
I don't know about dinner or the night shoot, probably not if they're with me.
IOf I come alone, I'll probably do the gardens, dinner, and night shoot.
I have no clue yet.....

I think I'm in for tomorrow... I'm thinking I'll join the Union Station group. I'll probably drive to Metro and then Metro in from there, but I can offer rides from Metro to Jeffrey's house for dinner. Jeffrey - I may need directions to your house from Grosvenor (or just give me from the Beltway), as that's likely where I'll park in the morning, since Union Station is on the red line. If I do the night shoot (I probably will), I will drive in for that and can offer rides in as well. My car has 5 seatbelts, but five people is a tight squeeze -- it seats four comfortably.
As a side note, I need to be in Baltimore Sunday morning -- so if anyone (preferably anyone who does not own cats -- I'm allergic) is willing to offer a guest room, sofa or floor where I can crash for a Saturday night, I would be most grateful.
Jeffrey: If for any reason we need or want to split into three groups for the afternoon, I'm willing to lead a group. I'm pretty familiar with DC and helped lead the first two night tours.
Also, please let me know if I can contribute anything to the cause for dinner.
Thanks,
~Terry
