I have a 15 minute charger but it only uses special batterys but i will be carrying them for emergency's. Ill also be carrying about 15 rechargable AA's.

I have a inverter in case someone needs one.

Kadi forget the tripod and get a handgun permit lol. (Maryland after about 12 different things most people can pass you still need notarized threats or a police record of threats agaisnt you to get one lol.

Try direct to BWI and, yes, there's another spare room.
:)

It's summer. It *always* says rain. What actually happens is anybody's guess ;-)

I keep a nice-sized garbage bag in my backpack so if I have to I can stuff all my gear in there. I'll still get wet, but I'm less likely to be damaged by it.

Thanks guys. I played with flights (not a lover of the airplane) and it would just be too expensive for a short trip. Plus I haven't visited my sister in LA (have to stay in a hotel because their 900 sq foot house won't hold another person) for the same reason. I wish travel weren't so expensive.

Take tons of great pics and think of me. ;~D

You'll just have to plan ahead for next year...or, perhaps, Baltimore later this year with a side-trip to DC just for the heck of it. ;)

Bump and a reminder to check the info in the first post AND send me a PM confirming you're coming.

After much jacking my schedule and trying to fit things in, I'm GONNA be there! I have no idea, 'cause I've been really busy with other stuff, what it is I'm s'posed to do or where I'm s'posed to be. My cell is 717-919-2120 and I'll probably end up trying to sort this all out Friday night unless I can get it together to meet someone. I'm all of two hours away, so it isn't a huge deal except that I'm sorta disorganized.

I'm still a little up in the air with logistics as my wife and daughter may want to go museuming and whatnot and may want to dump me off.

Saturday's weather is starting to look nice, other than the usual threat of a stray thunder shower. High forecast "only" in the low 80's.

I figure even if it rains itll be like its been here in baltimore. Short spurts in small area's.

Should bring a poncho and an umbrella to make it to saftey at times. Other then that nothing to worry about.

So what time and where are we meeting? I'm going to do my best to be there, but right now I'm laid up with a pretty nasty virus.

Oh yeah! Tripods are not alloewd to be set up ANYWHERE on Capitol Hill. I'm thinking about trying to string monopod.

I am going to try and be there at the zoo with the family. I fractured my knee and I'm 99% sure I torn my ACL last Thursday playing basketball, but I can still walk... with a cool gangster limp. Anyway, I need to convince my wife I am able to walk properly and without pain before she'll give the green light... she's uber protective of me.

If we are there, this is what we look like...

Personally, I'm not concerned about tripods near the Capitol, although I don't know the current rules at all. You won't need 'em during the day anyway, and you can get all kinds of great shots without being that close at night, where you can use tripods.

No shovel, but I'll be wearing the wife beater in case it does rain!

Image stabilized lenses are your friend at night...

I'm pretty sure the no-tripod thing is still there - I can't recall one recent instance where the level of security has been relaxed in the US..

taken with tripod by the capital reflecting pond, Capital police were right there.
We shoot there all the time and guess we have been lucky

Correct, you can not use tripods on the Capitol grounds. You need a permit and then can only use it in certain areas.

That is only on the capitol grounds though.

Other places you'll have issues are:

1. Smithsonian buildings - You'll have to "check" your tripod at the door when entering and retrieve it when you leave the building

2. If you set your tripod up any where outside a Smithsonian building, you may be approached by an over-zealous security guard saying it's Smithsonian policy to disallow the use of tripods on their grounds. This is not true however according to their web site which only mentions the interiors.

3. Lincoln & Jefferson Memorials will not allow you to use your tripod inside or on the stairs leading to them in most cases.

4. Some of the other monuments will do the same depending on who the security guard(s) are.

That's all I can think of for now.

That's not on the actual Capitol Grounds though and it's just fine to use a tripod there.

the only things you have to worry about are the ones that look like tripods and that have a footprint of 2-3 people...

this is the one i'll be bringing

it is 6.5" tall and has been many, many places that tripods are not allowed.

it's also allowed me to get shots that would have been pretty tough with a more conventional tripod
