Oh, man, I leave town for a few weeks and it all goes to hell in a handbasket! I remember some awesome pictures of that statue when Hains Point flooded ... the water was an even more perfect foil for the art.

Bummer :-(((

Jeff, you're bring one of those GT500's, right? And by one I mean several = )

Eastern Market has caught fire.. For anyone who had the pleasure of doing any shooting down there knows how sad this is, they say they will rebuild. Maybe across the street in fenced parking lot.
It was built in 1873.

Anybody else wanna come?

Are people interested in a day-long affair, as opposed to just shooting in the evening?

I'm available all day. I only suggested the evening because it'd be cooler, and I've never organized one of these before. Frankly, I didn't realize people would travel for it. :)

So to make it worth your travel time, we can start whenever.

You just don't see yourself as others see you ...

Link to Smithsonian policies. They do allow photography in many instances but not tripods, and if you have a backpack it will be searched. Welcome to Washington :-)

It's not too terrible, though. I have been allowed to walk around inside Smithsonians with my monopod...as long as I don't try to use it. (Tip: the security guards are usually as nice to you as you are to them.) The only museum I know of that has a place to check items is the National Portrait Gallery which is a favorite spot of mine. :) I do put my backpack in a locker there since they don't want it carried on the shoulder and my wrists get quite tired holding 20+ lbs. of gear.

As far as length of day (or days) goes I'm available, too.

Wow... I didn't realize it'd been so long. Please add me to the list of participating peeps.

Jeffrey and group,
I can't believe that I am even considering this ... but I might try to join ya'all. It all depends, of course, on how well I can walk at that time.
Assuming I can even do this, Tom (husband) and myself would have to do our own transport. CROSS YOUR FINGERS.

Do I want to see the Iwo Jima Memorial again?????

I might do, but I won't know for sure until fairly close to the time, if you'll have me under such circumstances. :)

You don't understand how it works. I put your name on the list up top, and then you MUST come. :) It's like this DPC superpower to alter the universe to comport with whatever appears on the site.

Do we have a tentative schedule yet? I want to coordinate this GTG with my work and try to make this a business trip.

please add me to the list ,

What we do during the day will depend on what we do later that night. We can also break into more than one group if there are multiple places people want to see where we won't have enough time to do both. Some points:

Inside the museums on a Saturday in June is not easy.
It will be warm to me, which means hot to many others, and really hot to a few. Keep that in mind when deciding how much you want to walk.

Last big DC GTG there were 2 or 3 groups: one did capitol hill (library, eastern market, etc), one did the zoo, not sure where the other went.

The DPC GTG of 2005 was amazing in its organization - Terry and Clara did an excellent job and I personally am in no way up to the task as they did it. It was, well, phenomenal. We can use some of the threads created from their work to help us now:

Events wish list

A little bit of everything and then some

Equipment check list

I have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off so if anyone is coming in early or leaving late we can hook up and find something to shoot.

Krnodil and TLL061, you're now on the list.

Thanks, dahkota, for that great info.

My wife and I hereby invite everyone over to our house for a BBQ. Late afternoon is the hottest part of the day, so it'd be good to take a break, have something to eat and drink, and BS each other about what fantastic photographers we are.

I'm planning to be out all day shooting with some group, so I'll definitely be ready for a break.

Lemme look over the stuff dahkota just posted, chat with her, and then we'll get back with some ideas.

But nikolai, I think you can assume you could have someone to play with all day on June 23, and depending on how things go, maybe the next day, too.

I'm in, I live in Annandale, so it's a quickie of a drive and can get into military bases easily and pentagon parking for metro.

Well! Welcome to DPC. :)

"Combat videographer" - I look forward to hearing your work stories! They'll definitely beat my tales of long meetings and editing.

as a survivor participant of the 2005 GTG, i highly recommend this group of people. i am going to be all over the place this summer and don't know that i will be able to get out there, but i strongly encourage anyone who is on the fence to get out there and go.

i had the best time running around with the DPCers. it was wonderful to not be the only one in the group who wants to stop and take pictures of fire hydrants and other miscellaneous crap. and besides the immediate camaraderie, i made some great friends.
