Okay, folks, the hour draws near. Like dahkota said, I'm also all over DC all the time, so I'll go wherever people want. Start chatting up your desired spots.

I had, indeed, planned to start at the zoo, but we can really go anywhere. Dahkota will lead one group around and I'll take another, so that gives us two itineraries we can build.

I like dahkota's idea of hooking up with everyone for lunch, then breaking apart again for the afternoon, and getting back together at my house again for dinner. Then we'll head out to shoot at night.

One thing dahkota offered is that she can drive through Arlington Cemetery, so keep that in mind.

I haven't gotten any special permits, and the way my life's going, I'm not going to be able to.

But let me tell ya, there's a LOT you can do without permits, including shooting handheld in the Metro if you brace yourself well. :)

Oh, for the night shoot, go read this thread.

And remember it's likely to be hot and humid, so plan to bring plenty of water. I typically carry 1/2 gallon.

You asked for "our" desires - I know that I definitely want to go to the zoo (I'll arrive in the mid-late morning). The Botanical Gardens would be nice, but certainly a 2nd choice. After that, I'm game for any of the memorials and/or the Smithsonian - or just wandering around town people-watching. I plan to be there until late in the evening to get some night shots (hopefully some nice sunset pix too). Lemme know the plans and I'll show up. :-D THANKS!

On the 23rd, these things will also be happening:

World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Entertainers include Chuck Brown, Slim Man and Third World. Pennsylvania Avenue Between Ninth and 14th Streets

The International Child Art Foundation Festival, which celebrates children's artistic creativity with live entertainment and hands-on workshops. The National Mall

D.C. Caribbean Carnival This annual festival and parade feature elaborate costumes and exuberant dancers. Banneker Community Center - 2500 Georgia Ave. NW, Washington, DC

WINS Annual Powwow Celebrating American Indian culture and dance. American University

The BBQ championship and the international child art festival will be close to or on the mall. The other two are a little out of the way but, being that DC is no more than 10 miles across, not so far they are out of reach.

Is a meeting time/location set up for the zoo? I'd like to start there
06/16/2007 11:19:16 PM · #107
WOW - Courtenay, there are a lot of great photo ops that day! I think you mentioned that y'all planned to probably have 2 groups going... This sounds cool to me and allows more people more options. Thank y'all for coordinating this - I know it's got to be a nightmare! HA!

If the "powers that be" would post some meeting times for the two groups - or more specific tentative iteneraries - it would be helpful to those of us coming from out of town. I know I want to make sure I'm there in time to join the group going to the zoo. I'd also love to hit the Arboretum and/or the Botanical Gardens - but I'm just one guy voicing his opinions.

I know the day will be great fun & include a plethora of opportune moments to capture. Can't wait to see some of y'all again and to meet some new faces!

I'm going to be bringing an artist friend, but have a couple of small passenger spaces in the back of my car (Acura 2-door coupe) coming from Buchanan, VA (between Roanoke & Lexington) EARLY that morning and heading back n the wee hours of Sunday morning - if anyone needs a ride.

I'm really looking forward to this. I think I need an infusion of "good" DPC blood. It'll be great to see some familiar faces and reconnect in person with this amazing community of individuals. If it's your first GTG or if you're waffling about coming because you have lens or camera envy - DON'T BE AFRAID! HA! I was just a little podunk hillbilly travelling to the big city 2 years ago for the DC NotaCon event, with my little P&S Gateway camera perched on an antique tripod. Granted, I got more than a few laughs, but the final laugh was on them when I produced some decent shots afterward! Every time I've seen Karen (khdoss) since, she has teased me about that little camera perched on top of that big tripod! HAHAHA But I've still got it (and use it)! (I'll always luv ya Karen! My memory is long and my revenge is sweet! tehee)

Looking forward to seeing you ALL there! Thanks levyj413 for coordinating this and thank you dahkota for assisting (and anyone else who's helping out too!).

This is the best option in my opinion and that's where I'll be. Not sure I'll make the night shoot, but will be there for the day fun.

add this to the plan please...

For the Union Station meet, we will be in front of Union Station, at the fountain, from 9:00-9:30, then head towards the Capitol Building. That will put us at the US Botanical Gardens around 10AM for anyone who wants to shoot inside. The line might be long to get in, but it is really quick - just a bag check. Anyone who doesn't want to go inside will have lots of people watching and the Capitol Reflecting Pool to shoot.

From there, we can head down the National Mall towards the Washington Monument. Eventually, we will end up at metro center for lunch. Metro has added performers at many of its stations so they could also be interesting to photograph.

I've edited the first post to include the new info.

Thanks! :)

PM'd ya Jeffrey. I'll be there, but will most likely decide on which group to start with on the drive down... ;-)

For anyone with a Nikon DSLR, I'll be bringing a 10-pin remote cable from Adorama.

Remember to go read the first post in this thread for important, updated info about the day.

Jeffrey (leveyj413), thanks for keeping all those details updated! (Whew!)

I'm coming. I'm bringing 1-3 people in my mini-van. Spare room for others and camera gear still available.

I'm planning on making it a full day starting at the Mall and going into the night. Outside of the Mall I'm flexible and willing to go most anywhere.

I shoot rain or shine...but not in the (heavy) rain. I know that on the Mall all the Smithsonians as well as the Botanic Gardens are good retreats. Of course there's always something interesting a Metro stop away, as well. But with DC's propensity for spontaneously showering its population in the afternoon, should we have some other ideas?

I'm sooooooooo looking foward to this!

I love rain but only when im geared up for it. My cameras and I will be lacking most of the gear needed for heavy rain but i will be bringing a spare change and if i can find one an umbrella.

Isolated Thunderstorms with a 30% chance of precipitation. That doesn't mean alot of rain but it does mean some cloud cover...... MOON SHOT come on!

I will PM my cell phone to anyone on the list of attendees who PMs me. Please do it before 8AM Saturday morning, as I will be gone by then.

Also, I have a converter in my car for those that need to recharge batteries sometime during the day. I will also stock my car with a cooler full of water, some extra trashbags, and some towels.

For anyone that wants to use it, I have a spare remote that works with a Canon 300D. I am also more than willing to share lenses with those who want to try one (they are all canon mount).

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head but feel free to PM me or post in this thread if you think of something.

KaDi, you are doing the mall - anywhere you particularly want to go?

And, when is the Baltimore GTG? :) The architecture alone is worth the trip...

I am so all over your post!
1. I will also PM cell # to anyone who is coming and PM's me.
2. I also have a converter in my car. (Someone remind me to find the rest of the attachments for non-Canon Rebel batteries.)
3. >>Hand way up in the air, here!<< My remote died it's last death...can I use yours...is it for sale?
4. I'm open to going anywhere. Since I moved here last year I've been to DC about every month...sometimes more than once in a month! I do the same places over and over and never get bored. So, to answer, I've got no druthers except to share what familiarity I do have or to find something new or to wander into an un-safe neighborhood with tripod-wielding friends because I don't know any better. :)
5. The Baltimore GTG will take place when I've been to Baltimore more than I've been to DC. (I live just outside.) But soon! I've got most of August free....
