Painterly was traditionally used in describing a certain type of painting technique with color and brush strokes, but has become used in photography as well: Of, relating to, or being a style marked by openness of form, with shapes distinguished by variations of color rather than by outline or contour.

From wikipedia: Painterly characterizes the work of Pierre Bonnard, Francis Bacon (painter), Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Rembrandt or Renoir. In watercolor it might be represented by John Singer Sargent. |

Stieglitz
part of his series of portraits of georgia o'keeffe. in a wonderful story, a rich man asked if stieglitz could take portraits of his wife in the same style as those of o'keeffe. stieglitz declined, commenting later that he wondered if the man knew the kind of relationship stieglitz needed to make portraits like that...
wonderful idea judy.

I guess pictorialism is a more familiar term-any variation of non-color - b&w, duotone, sepia would be nice. Color sucks. |

A Painterly challenge is a good idea. Photography is used to acknowledge graphic conventions developed from painting. The term painterly may have several meanings, I often think of the term, and use it to describe several situations where a photo evokes a handmade, expressive/brushy effect, or when a painting style may be shown. Dax and ursula come to mind - with styles that can be delicate and dreamy - like a watercolor. Jutilda can create a full length figure which might be mistaken for a Sargent. A hard edged composition, might be stretching the idea, but I have seen some that evoke the idea of painterly to me.
here are some examples that may be representative of painterly:

Thank you, Judy, for suggesting. Even if it doesn't come to fruition soon, it's a great topic to bring up :) |
