there's some great stuff happening here. to answer a few questions and comments i've had on my stuff:
the borders i use are kubota sloppy borders which cost $125 us. i like them becaust they're made from real film rebates printed in a darkroom then scanned and made into vector graphics.
i use curves on luminosity blend mode because that seems to correct the odd saturation that curves seems to give.
i shoot with the camera on aperture priority. the buttons are laid out rather oddly on the canaon, so i find fully manual rather awkward. if i'm going fully manual, then i want to control the aperture on the lens like on my old film cameras.
i have no idea how the starburst patterns happen on my suns. i usually don't use a filter - i have a polariser, but most of the time just have a naked lens. i had a daylight filter, but it just seemed to attract filth, so gave up on that. the lens seems to be fine, no scratches, even though i often clean it with my shirts.

this is like day 8 coz its a newly posted unedited shot, with its processed version ... as i say in the edited version its an example of trying to save a badly composed shot and not succeeding ... different crops just didnt work etc etc etc .. but because we learn by making mistakes someone might learn something from this, as i have ...
you can now tear me to strips!!!!!!!!!! :)
unedited ... which i'm just about embarrassed to put in, but wot the heck ...
edited ... which is also a bit embarrassing!!!
i'll start putting my edited versions in from day 3 up to day 6 starting tomorrow .. they have no 'mistakes' and are all perfect!!! .. lol ... as if!!

Day 8

03/16/2007 11:48:27 PM · #205 |
So, here's day 8. The original is included as a thumb.
I will be editing with advanced rules for the next 6 pics. I'd really like you to be honest about my editing. If what I'm doing isn't working in your opinion, I'd like to hear why, and I'd like your suggestions for improvement. Also, I have some concerns about PSCS2 settings - specifically that I don't know what the best settings are for internet viewing. Sometimes I get the feeling that what I see on my screen isn't what you're seeing. If this is something you understand, I'd love to hear from you.
Edited to add that since I shot in Raw + jpeg, I will be using the Raw to edit.

I found a moth on the tomato packing machinery that I was working on today. I think that it was dying, or perhaps spider bitten, as it was still able to climb around, but would not fly. I put the moth on this black brush for contrast, and was using on camera flash and f11 or 16.
Second photo for scale. I had rust on my hands from the machine, and was shooting with a 1975 model manual focus 55mm Micro Nikkor using my left hand only for the camera operation. That was a bit of a struggle, as it is something that I have never practiced until today. I was having a time just holding on to the camera and working the shutter.
Lilly from yesterday at 100% crop. Everyone seemed to like it, so I posted it again big enough to see the details. No edit except crop, resize from 950 to 640pix horizonal, not sharpened. This is cropped from the same image.

Roz,
Can you post to a photo that uses them? That way I'll be sure which "look" you're asking about!

Day 9 - Edited version of the Star picture. Note that the edited versions may not be in the same order as the minimal versions - I'm posting them to my workshop as I edit them, and will pick one to post here each day.

Day 9 - Street at Sunset
Original
Edited
I wanted to play with getting rid of noise, powerlines, and essentially trying to recover a shot lost due to bad settings. I did not succeed. Instead, I had to try to make the sky the focus, and crop out the street (the noise was too strong, and not at all attractive). The powerlines resisted every effort to get rid of them, so I have embraced them as part of my local landscape (not really, but I'm trying). In the end, I'm not thrilled with it. But, here it is. Details on post processing on the page.
If anyone wants the RAW version of this to test their skills, let me know and we'll work it out (but I won't mind if no one wants to play; I think the shot is pretty much unrecoverable, and I've already spent a lot of time trying).
Tomorrow I am going to comment (got done painting the kitchen today, so finally should have some free time tomorrow).

Day 9

03/17/2007 10:07:48 PM · #216 |
I am done with my 7 day minimal and 7 edited photo challenge
Day 1 Unedited/ Edited

I performed tonemapping using Photomatix Pro, desaturated using individual color channels, cropped down slightly, dodged and burned, sharpened by USM, save for web.
Day 2 Unedited/ Edited

Adjusted curves, levels, saturation/ hue on individual colors, cropped to remove audience on side of image, dodged and burned extensively, sharpened by USM, sharpened on faces a little, save for web
Day 3 Unedited/ Edited

Adjusted curves, levels, minor changes to hue/ sat, cropped, dodged and burned around eyes and in hair a little, sharpened eyes, save for web
Day 4 Unedited/ Edited

Opened in CS2 - adjusted exposure of raw image, curves to increase contrast, levels, increased red and yellow saturation, sharpened by USM 25,50,0 then 85,.5,0. Spot sharpening on bark.
Day 5 Unedited/ Edited

Used Photomatix Pro to tonemap this image.
adjusted levels, contrast/brightness,hue and saturation to bring out the yellows and blues, USM to sharpen (85,.5,0), blurred sky to remove noise (i need to buy noise ninja!),dodge and burn a little on the rocks to drop highlights and bring out a little more clarity save for web (200kb and 720)
Day 6 Unedited/ Edited

Tonemapped using Photomatix Pro, adjusted levels, hue sat, some burning and dodging... Gotta admit it - I like the nonedited better
Day 7 Unedited/ Edited

Very minor editing because I liked the original so much. USM 25,50,0 to increase contrast, a little dodge and burn in sand and on posts of chair. Not much else!!
This was a great deal of fun. I think my minimals got better during the week. I will keep looking for the good light.... |

2nd edit, a bit lighter again. Still from the first dark image.
The rest of the afternoon in the Everglades is here;
Mar 17 07 Afternoon in the Glades
Lots of green stuff there for St Patricks Day
The photo edit was just increase brightness and levels a huge amount, adjust contrast for near black in the darkest areas, back off a touch on saturation, and sharpen.
I was shooting with a manual lens, with no metering. The dark one is the first one of the group which was more or less a grab shot. I could see that it had potential, so I went ahead with the edit. I knew that it would end up with the "painted" look, and that the darkness would help to get that effect.
There is a correctly exposed image of the same deer on my homepage at the link above.

A couple of folks have mentioned their colors don't quite look the same once they put the picture on DPC. One thing to check for - if you're working in RAW, Photoshop generally handles the file as Adobe RGB color (though I think it's something you can set). Before you put the file on DPC, you need to "convert" the color profile to "sRGB IEC61966-2.1", which, as I understand it, is the web colorspace. To do this, once you're done processing and have already saved the file as something (for your own purposes), then go to Edit, Covert to Profile (not Assign), and choose the sRGB option. This will convert it to the webspace colors. Then choose Save for Web from the File menu, and set the slider to a percentage that corresponds to the 150Kb filesize. You'll have your original in Adobe RGB, and you'll have your web version in sRGB. Then load it to your workshop, and view it on DPC to see if it's the way you want it to be.
Hope this helps! |

Day 10 - Swans Edited
Original
Edited
Details on the edited version, but mainly cropped and cleaned up a bit. Tried hard to change the color of the water, but it always looked fake, so just darkened it a bit to increase the contrast and bring the swans out some more.
I'm really enjoying this; gonna go and look at the thread and the shots some more. Good stuff, everyone!

i'm sorry but altho i try like crazy to take the very best photograph i possibly can, i cant help but notice things i would like to improve when i download into my computer ...
like out of camera without sharpening and a bit of contrast to me looks bland ...
i've got to know my camera a lot better since doing this min ed project and am taking shots a lot more so they are right before photoshop, so thanks lisa for suggesting this project ..
the original ..
the b&w version .. there are three processes i did on this photograph all scaled to increase the height ... the thumbs are in comments in this image ..
this is the sleepers one taken at the same time ... i dont think i was able to process this one that well ... there's thumb in photographers comment with another process i did on it that's b&w ...
