Hey, could someone Earn the Master level before Sept 30, and enter the SAME pic they won with during the month, since it (obviously) was taken within the proper timeframe??

marbo, you're special in the fact that most of the ribbon winners are being humble and gracious towards us rookies!

Why feed the whole 'elitist' complex in the minds of some of the people who have posted here?

It was a joke. Rules= take a photo

I know, I know...but sensitivity seems high in this thread from some people!

Have fun with this one guys/gals!

I was excited to see that there was a free study. Then, I get the *not enough ribbons* junk... OUCH.

I see it as "Not good enough? go home." Just how I see it though. Ask me in a few hours and I will have forgotten about it.

My photos appeal to the masses, just not DPC...

I see. This sentiment strikes me as elitist, where nothing said before did. "We want our special Challenge, and nobody else can have one!".

Oh, Crap. I REALLY didn't want to get into an arguement here. I have a (possibly blood pressure related) headache today already.

I'm going to pretend the forums don't exist for a few weeks. See you folks in the Challenges!

Nope -- part of the basic site/challenge rules are that a photo can only be used in one challenge.

Assuming that computerking has in fact left, this is for everybody else:

Go look at my pitiful portfolio! I'm not being elitist...I'm one of the 'everyone else' that in my opinion shouldn't have their (our) own challenge...

Oh, and so is peecee!

The experiment will be a wild success because you'll have people who take really great shots competing against others who take really great shots in a no-holds-barred playoff. The entries should be amazing to look at (more so because it's a Free Study, although I would have preferred a theme).

To me, the only unfortunate part about this is that some truly EXCELLENT photographers will be excluded (ScantyNebula, JodieCoston, Smokeditor, etc.) just because they haven't built their ribbon collection fast enough, and that's a shame. For that reason alone, I don't think this is such a good idea.

I agree that I don't think that there needs to be a consolation prize. I'm new here, but like the idea that each week my photos are put up against some of the best (masters as it seems DPC wants to call them). If a consolation is given, and you win, it would only mean that you are the best of everybody but the best and that's not what I want.

I like the idea of the Master's challenge, but I don't like the idea of three ribbons to enter. I think that the rule should be 3 votes of 7 or higher. And 7 is only an example, it could be higher or lower depending on what the site council (or whoever) picks. This would open the challenge up to those that scored well, but were outscored.

Just wanted to get my two cents worth ;-)

Maybe that's why I don't watch sports ;) There is also a difference here: Everybody starts out the same, they win *different* titles, and then one team wins the big medal/cup. And then, everybody starts at 0 again. This is not the case here, ribbons are ribbons, and the winners get to keep them of course.

It's not the status of the person complaining but the argument they put forward. The best getting better and elitist are the usual terms and words thrown around as an against argument.

Then take my word that I'm not just whining or being against something because I can't participate (or because I love whining), but because I sincerely feel that this is not a good idea. And I would also be against it if I had ten blue ribbons. This is not about me being childish, I just don't like this particular idea.

I know what an experiment is, and I agree. But I just have my doubts that the results will be looked at in an unbiased way. Just look at this thread: Everybody's patting everybody else on the shoulders - and those who don't like the challenge are called whiners. What do you think people will say about the winners of the Masters Challenge? I think the site council should take the opinions of people seriously who are pissed off now, even if they don't have any ribbons.

Not being very good at analogies but ...

We have the premiership that divides 'top class' UK football/soccer teams from the lower divisions.

We have the world Cup where you need to qualify

We have the Cup Winners Cup (for winners of Cups)

I could go on but I'm not a big football fan.

Its really quite simple, Non members simply have to join to enter members challenges so it seems quite natural that the 'Masters' challenge has a Ribbon count criteria. I for one would quite like to see an end of year challenge where we vote on the entire years ribbon winners (350 ish). I'm happy to be able to compete against the newly named 'Masters' up to twice a week and I think it will be an excellent challenge but wonder just how many triple(+) winners will enter - pride is at stake here

You know, what I REALLY don't understand is that you have all come to a web site where you all vote on who has taken the best picture. You are all part of a website where the raison d'etre is to be competitive.
HOW ARE YOU ALL UPSET THAT THIS IS ELITIST? That is the PREMISE of this website!!
Rant over...

Edit... I want the above read in an 'amused' tone of voice, not an angry one!!

That's not true. Being competitive and being elitist are two different things. If you win something in a competition, then you are part of an elite - but that does not make you elitist! Being elitist means that you will grant certain privileges to people who you perceive to be part of an elite already. Everybody here who has earned ribbons has my respect for that. But using that to create a class of "masters" is something I believe is not a good idea, and it certainly is elitist (and I'm not just picking a random "I am against"-word here).

I agree with you, and I think we do. However, I also think that your suggestions are more likely to be taken seriously if you don't imply quite so forcefully the stupidity of the addressees.

I'm pretty sure I have the site record for challenges entered with zero ribbons won, so I feel "qualified" to comment on all sides of this issue ...

I hope all the nonactive people that are qualified get some sort of notification that this is here for them. I haven't seen some of the names in challenges before.
I think it's a splendid idea and it's sorta like the recent nude challenge. Look at how all the "best" were in the top. It should be very interesting to see the results and read the comments the masters leave on each others work.
09/03/2004 04:32:22 PM · #99
I wonder if Konador can make icons for the masters so they can be identified.

Well, you can either see it as elitist, or you can see it as an enticement for people at the top to hang around and carry on helping the people at the bottom. I'd be interested to see Setzler's opinion on this, as I'm sure this is something along the lines of what he was after for quite a long time, and as a result of nothing happening I believe we lost some very good photographers.
