I was considering switching systems to the D700 as well, but a couple things won me over:
Once decent high ISO samples came available, the noise performance is astonishing - only equaled by the top-of-the-line cameras.
While huge megapixel count isn't strictly necessary, it does allow for down-sampling images - which effectively improves noise (and maybe sharpness) vs. smaller pixel count competitors. Plus they offer it in-camera via sRAW.
While it may turn others off, I view the video feature as very interesting. My typical video use case is casual recording of my family's events. The quality is infinitely better than my current camcorder, and that'll be one less device to mess with.
For me - high FPS, pro-sports grade AF, and full weather sealing are not really on my "must have" list. |

That's what I think is funny about the 5dII debate. Some people think it doesn't go far enough ... others think it has gone too far. Clearly Canon has struck a nerve. I figure, as long as the camera doesn't falter (some unknown defect), it's destined to take over the 5D's spot as a favorite among enthusiasts. For one thing, it offers everything the original did (and then some), for another ... it manages to cost less than the original. That's quite a feat.

exactly.
It is 'hopefully' going to be a gem of a camera, and makes me glad i haven't invested in the Mark III yet. Counting the days down until November!
