Day 1
Overlayed several texturess, I can post them if anyone would like me too...
a few different lighting effects through photoshop, dodge, burn, highlights/shadows, probably 20-30 layers total, erasing effects at different opacity's as I went to bring out the textures in certain areas... desat... A little bit of liquify, sharpening, blurring... lol :P

Not particularly amazed by this one, but it was the best I could come up with on such short notice.

November 01
OK, this is pure and simple experimentation. And let's make it clear that I do NOT think it was a success. However, I wanted to put something in, so here it is.

A photo of mums in the garden, with an overlay of an oil-slicked water shot.

Charlie, I hope you don't mind me jumping in here...I didn't "sign up" for the overlay challenge (I'm in textures), but it looks like a neat thing and after reading some I went ahead and processed an image I took today at the lake with one of my textures. Here it is....

+=

copied and pasted cloud texture on top of image
set opacity to 36%
Used eraser tool to erase cloud texture on trees and clump of grass in foreground.
copied and pasted cloud texture again and masked with black vector mask
Painted sky clouds back in with 19% opacity brush with white foreground
Duplicated original lake layer and boosted saturation, applied mask and painted back in
sharpened
saved for web

The border is the fabric covering a hat box that simulates leopard skin. Overlaid on a cheetah picture to give it a picture frame look.

TIP: Drag, Drop and Perfectly Center New Layers

With 2 images open in PhotoShop you can easily add one image to the other and perfectly center it.

Just select the "move" tool
click and hold on the image to be copied
begin dragging and hold down the Shift key
keep the shift key down until you release the left mouse button over the base image
and voila!
a copy is made and placed exactly in the center of the base image.

(If you already knew this, you're probably more talented than me and should write a tip to enlighten me. ;-) )

What is an overlay?

hey Alecia ..
i think the term overlay is confusing because in photoshop you have blending modes and one of them is 'overlay' ..
when we use the term 'overlay' in this particular thread tho, it means we are overlaying or placing a texture on top of a 'background' image .. (i say 'background' because you may have changed the background by doing levels or cloning or other things to alter it, and then it is no longer a background layer) ..
when you place another photograph (usually a photograph that is more a texture .. have a look in this thread texture resources) over your 'background' layer and then either change the blending modes or alter the opacity you can then create some interesting textures .. or even add something where it wasnt before ..
for instance jasonlprice created clouds where before the sky was blown out ..

i hope this was helpful .. :)

Wow you are all doing so well over here, with your overlays.....

We have some amazing textures available already, from some of our Texture photographers, who say you are welcomed to use some of them.

Visit here to take a look.....

Sorry, I may post more than one a day cause I love this so much. I combined blur, "slice of life" and texture to get this one LOL
