This is one I found ambiguous, but to insure my salvation I am sending pineapple $5.00.

....It is indeed desolate, spiritually and with regard to features. - pineapple

I second that comment of his on your picture - read that the other day and thought it was incredible. He does good work, doesn't he?

ha! you two are doing the good work, but I will admit this made my day. I've been getting a little frustrated with dpc and it sure feels terrific to be appreciated.

As to comments received, not much today, but let me dig something up from the past:

yanko is right on the money with what I intended and what I did and didn't achieve:

You sure you didn't take this 60 years ago? That smoke makes it look so old. I kinda like it. If you wanted to make it look even more like an old image I would get more of you in the shot or make it an oval crop. The way you cropped it here makes it feel too modern for me. :P

NightShy left the following comment for me. I was blown away... it really made my day, not just because of the effusiveness of it, but also because she's a great photographer with a style I love. Thanks again Katherine.

"ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME!? This is awesome! My gosh, this is awesome! More than awesome! I need a new word!
*opens microsoft word types in awesome and finds a synonym*
Irresistibly and overwhelming tremendousâ€Â¦simply breathtaking!
That'll do."

It still makes me smile. :)

Just wanted to share.

This was in the Something New challenge. I love her gallery and the fact that I had that affect on her really gave me a sense of pride in what I am doing and made my day. After this I decided to go ahead and go through the work of getting my DPC Prints in motion. So if I ever sell any I owe it to her. Thank you Shecoya.
And thanks for picking my comment Kronus, I still think that pic is sweet.
I like this thread, I already know which comment I'll put tommorrow :).

By Paul Martin - aka ubique on this shot:

This is one of my favourite images in this challenge. Brilliant composition, and for once the use of moderately stark and dramatic post-processing is justified. The effect is a little reminiscent of one of those heroic posters much loved by the propagandists of the old Soviet Union - hope that doesn't offend; they were often masterpieces of graphic design. It's a beautiful work. 10.

"Such a complete image, Christine. I've said this before of your work, but once again you have produced a photograph that really rewards a second, third and fourth look. You've done it to me several times now, so it cannot be an accident. In the hope that one or two others who stumble across this comment might appreciate the work of an original and cerebral photographer who eschews "pretty" dross and instead asks the viewer to make an effort, here's a few links to follow:
"

from Ubique.I've just visited Ubiques profile page.very sad to read that he's "leaving" DPC ( link ).So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.
I greatly appreciated his analytical style, elegance and wit.

I love comments from ubique and e301, to name a few. They seem to hit things on the head about my own images that I myself hadn't completely realized. They wonderfully verbalize things that we see or don't see...even in the subliminal. Truly artful with their comments. Always a pleasure to recieve.

Comment by undieyatch:
As karmabreeze mentioned.... "....blown highlights" have affect on how one views this. I see the smoke conflicting to some extent in highlights with a marvelous quasi-nostalgic colour edit. Not that the effect should have been eliminated, the combined effect appears to be more successful in the black & white outtakes, which I like very much. However I found this portrait deserving at least the 6 I gave it.

Well, posthumous, it's fun to follow you, since the comment you just left me was so nice:

I would have picked this as my favorite. Her coldness comes across as something more profound, an emotional state. isolation? but there's also a sense of apprehension, which implies that there is hope. it is not a despairing portrait by any means. the viewer feels a connection with the subject.

I have received a lot of great comments in my time here. Too many to select one as "representative"... However, on the following image:

I received a comment from Larus that made me laugh hysterically (and I mean this in a good way):

I have a feeling this is not Roberts shot (Bear Music) but very similar. His shots normally have better image quality, the sky in particular is a bit close to blowing out the red channel in spots and seems almost oversaturated (well for my taste anyway). I really do like the composition though, nice job on that and in that regard it´s as good as Robert´s work, just need slightly better image quality and a skiff and your all set :)

How sweet is that? I'm being compared to my own work and being found slightly wanting :-) I agree with that, btw: it's not the best of that sort of thing I have posted, by far.

Let me add, since this is somewhat a "goodbye to Paul (ubique) threads right now (and I'll miss him terribly), he left the following comment on the same image, which nails exactly what I was after; the man has a talent for seeing what we are trying to do...

This rises way above all the run-of-the-mill shots of "misty" water because of the incorporation of the foreground grasses/rushes ... presented here as a recognisable but irreconcilable blend of movement and location. It's the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle applied to vegetation! So you have used the long exposure to actually say something, rather than just to effect a tedious photographic trick. Bravo! Plus it's a rather lovely landscape. 9.

We'll all miss you, Paul :-(

OK, I had to think for a while, but I figured out wich comment I think was the best. Made me feel warm inside, you know ;-)

The comment was made by Louis on this photo:

"Great portrait for which this tight dark crop works well. Position of the subject's eye in the frame, the catchlight, and its darkness are very satisfying. There are a lot of minor elements that help to make this an excellent composition for me: the border supplied by the hair and stripes, the vertical vs. horizontal position of these, the grain in the photo vs. the texture in the child's skin, the perfect lighting that adds an element of darkness, unsureness, tension, all underscored excellently by the title. This is a superior photograph."

Thanks again Louis :)

I had to laugh when I got the following comment from Bear Music...

Fascinating reversal of BryanBrazil's "Sailing Duck", ... Were you conscious of this? I don't bring this up in a critical way. It's a lovely image. I'll poke a little fun at you if you ARE BryanBrazil, LOL. Feel free to PM me if you wish, I'm done voting and I have scored you well.

This one is just what my fragile ego needed!

Spectacular. I could go on and list the things you did to perfection, but I won't. I would love to offer some constructive criticism... but I can't.

This is by far the best image I have seen in this competition thus far, and I earnestly believe it will do quite well in the challenge.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks RayEthier

To bump this and add a comment from one of
DPC's most prolific commentors - Judy - aka Jutilda

"Boy, if this isn't Norman Rockwell material, I don't know what is.
My fav of the latest candids. His freckles, expression and then the flag - spot on."

Made my day - Thanks Judy!

mine would have to be:

comment by Jutilda

This has great DOF!! The green of the plant with the yellow willowiness of the grassy frond is a lovely duet in the foreground. The leading line of the driveway IS wonderful - I agree. What a "days gone by" sense this gives. Thanks for a brief respit from my responsibilities.
