What impressed me was that the actual artist I was trying to emulate, Allan Weitz, found this picture on our website and joined so he could leave a comment on my attempt!

I have to admit...I'm flattered. You should try to play up the diffusion part a bit more. Part of what makes my toy pix work is the way they drift in and out of focus. You might want to try shaping the background light to play off the swoopy shape of the car.
Most of all...keep having fun.

This comment came from sherpet about a day or so after I posted the image below called ode to sherpet. She found it on her own and her response made me happy all day. I had seen the plant and thought she would shoot it and I thought I would give a nod to her and maybe she would leave a comment just saying something if she ever saw it.

It actually made me cry "tears of happiness".

I only found this image when browsing through recent "new up-loads", which I do each and every day..... I was just so surprised.....

Edit: I suppose I should add who wrote it... haha.

This comment was given to me by Bosborne during the flowers challenge.

"Made me sit straight up in my chair!!!!!! Stunning photo. Great detail and light and DOF and.... 10"

I was very excited to see this comment! It sure made my day. :)

I can't post the photo or comment since it's on a current challenge, but DrAchoo just left a comment on my entry that started with "On the first 15 pictures I see, I'm looking for a full 30 seconds and leaving a comment..." followed by a great critique. It was nice to get some helpful comments during the challenge instead of having to beg for them afterwards. I actually went back into photoshop and learned a few more things that I didn't know how to do in order to fix up the shot. So thanks! :)

Here's an oldie-but-goodie...

Comment by melismatica:
I like this quite a bit. It has that very personal, in the moment quality, of a photographer's vision that is what I enjoy about the art. This is the type of thing that would be nearly completely ignored, if not outright scorned, in a challenge. As someone who is drawn to this sort of subject (I am particularly fascinated with shadows) I understand this image. It reveals a curiosity about line, form, color, textures, etc. and the photographer's desire to simply capture it as he has seen it, without a lot of bells and whistles. Am I making myself clear? I'm not sure. I also like that it was taken with a film camera.

Just got this very encouraging comment from chalice for my "Flowers" entry. Thanks!

This truly is art. As good as your score was (76 out of 374) it was still underated. I think this is your best work to date...I gave it an 8. The flower has as much emotional punch to it as any flower I ever remember seeing. The simplicity of the set-up is also powerful. I don't know much about Mapplethorpe (I saw one gallery exhibit of his work in Chicago some years back) other than his controversial nudity, but as I recall his technique is solid. So is the technique in your image. Well done.

It's not so much what he said, but when.... This came at a time when I was seriously doubting myself and considering giving up on challenges for a while.
The last part of his comment touches on what I consider my (fairly weak) strength, and knowing I succeeded with even one person makes it all worthwhile :)

Comment by Fromac:
This was the first shot I saw when I visited the site.

It's still one of my favourites.

I love the rhythm and the depth.

I find it interesting when common, familar things are put in new contexts or examined from unique points-of-view. This shot does both very nicely.

I got this one from Gracechild7 regarding my entry in Stationery.

This is one of only two images that I rated a 10, and I honestly like this one just a little bit better. I love the lines, the colour, the lighting, the dof. It's just... yummy. It really is. It wouldn't be the same image without the S curve, and actually, I think this is the first time I've really *noticed* that an S curve really *makes* the image. Also, the shadow is awesome. This whole image is awesome, and you deserve to eat some cookies or something 'cause this is really great.

This comment has stood out since I got it during the week and I was waiting for the challenge to end so I could post it.

"I like this alot! Defintely better then all the pictures of stationery, and just stationery. This puts a questioning twist with the picture. It makes you wonder. I like wondering!"

This comment was by Shrimptacular, on this image.

Now, what Emily said is so right. The image made her wonder. That means the image was successful....through all the negative and positive comments...everyone had a different opinion which means in some way or another...this image touched those people. It was a success.

I received this great comment on a shot I submitted for the "30 Seconds or More" challenge. The person who submitted the comment was ubique.

"The exposure allows the people to exert varying degrees of presence on the scene, and that's really the making of the story here ... it's as if this is a play (by Neil Simon, I suppose) or a movie (Woody Allen), in which there are major roles, supporting roles and bit parts. And the charm of it is that the contribution to the story is not proportional to the size of the part; several of the fleeting minor players actually have much more to say than some of those who remain on stage throughout but offer us nothing memorable. That's why the story had to be set in NY and not in LA, where this kind of witty inversion of status would not be tolerated - by the performers or by the audience. 10."

The reason I really like and appreciate this comment is not becuase of the rating the commentor mentions (although that's nice too), but because it goes to the heart of the meaning behind the shot. Most of my shots are not "WOW", but I usually try to present some story or meaning.

Much appreciation goes out to ubique for picking up on this in this shot.

Here's the shot:

today's wonderful comment:

Comment by agenkin:
IMO a very subtle and powerful composition. The frame is filled very nicely, there is good dynamics in the shot. The descending diagonal underlines the tragic state of the canoe. A very subtle sense of balance, too, with the heavy concrete structure in the upper right corner, balanced by a streaming mass of water in the lower left. Duotone works perfectly for this image. Nice texture on the bridge support, too.

I didn't vote in this challenge, otherwise this would have got a 9 or a 10 from me. This was a sure DPC flop (as it requires from the voter to rate the composition, not the subject, something of which most DPC-ers are incapable), though, but I hope that's not what matters to you a lot.

I tried adjusting levels and got an image that "popped" more, but I went back to the original low-contrast levels because they emphasized the composition. It was gratifying to see someone else like it. Sometimes I think I am crazy, but a comment like this let's me know that I'm not the only madman on the block! :)

I haven't checked for comments in a while- I don't get many so I usually only do it once a week. But I got this comment from tejinder and it really made me smile. It's a photo I'm pretty proud of and since I don't catch many shots like this of my daughter anymore makes it even that more special.

from tejinder:
textAny more words than just plain "wow" will dilute what I feel about this photo. It looks like coming straight from fairy land. Isn't she really a fairy playing blissfully in wonderland...??? :)

Great photo. The glow and highkey really works on this one. Adding to favs.text

I think this image, has been the one that really started it all for me at DPC, and have received so maany great comments, but this is "one" by "fotomann_forever", that touched me very much.

re fotomann_forever; This must be one of my all-time favorite shots on this site. Absolutely beautiful

Hey Sherpet, while you are in and around this forum...this one's for you:

By Sherpet: "WOW", this is just stunning, and love everything about it, especially the warm, striking, rich, colors.....
Magical, just magical.....
Yes into my favorites it goes.....

I especially appreciate this comment. It means a lot that someone who spends as much time as you do viewing photos would choose one of mine to add to their favorites. Thanks a lot.

Another on the same photo last night:

By SandyP: How in the world could you "forget" a photo like this!!!! I'd like to see the rest of your collection!!! This is about as dramatic and striking as you could get. An Outdoor Photographer magazine cover.

Thanks Sandy for all the exclamation points. I knew that I recognized your username...and when I looked at your profile I saw why. Your image, 'The Christmas Card' is one of my favorites. If anybody hasn't seen this one, then you should definitely check it out.
