As far as the comps go, usually I just enter the film ones because the Digital category is usually categorized as digital enhancement or manipulation, which I do very little. |
Interesting. You can see digital manipulation in the prints catagory in our club. In the slide catagory no one but me bothers . :) They have made no specification on the amount of manipulation in any catagory so far. The main rule is that it must have started as a photograph. I like their rules. Problem is with the judges - some are really open others are REALLY closed minded (I had one try to tell me how I took my picture - wrong). You just never know what you'll get... |

ACK!!!! My husband does this too me ALL the time. So I bought him a camera. And he brags about how little he has to carry and still tells me to "get one of that! and that!" So I tell him how to arrest people. And he stops. ;) |

I had that happen with them, also. After some haggling with some 18y/o, the manager came out and stood by his position and said I could come back with written permission from "the photographer" quoting Walmarts policy on copyrighted photos.
It ended with me telling them to tear up the print and threatening my own copyright lawsuit if I ever see that print surface.

Heh. Everyday, everyday I deal with this. I sell my photos in "CD ONLY" format, with a printing release for the purchaser giving them limited rights to print. And because it is so out of the box I get at a call a day from the printing places (my direct Cell# is on the release).
I ALWAYS carry a laminated permission to myself to print just incase I need to run off a quickie at Walmart during a shoot or out and about. LOL Though I have written one up right there at the desk before.... lol
Oh and another never say? "You couldnt possibly have taken this picture ."

That's an interesting thought, I wonder just how different the world of photography would be if Ansel Adams was 20 years old today... |

"Since you take great pictures but aren't a real pro, can you shoot my cousin's daughter's best friend's wedding? They don't have any money to pay you, but you might have fun since you like to take pictures all the time."

yep, that's kinda how our last exchange went. (I told my husband he should be glad he wasnt' with me). I ended up with the prints, but only after I told them that, "I only use walmart for my proofs. For the real pictures, I have a professional do them." slam |

I saw a story about a photo lab at Wally Mart that refused to print pictures of a newborn because the baby was naked in some of them and they were concerned about the pictures being considered "pornography".
You can certainly tell that Wally-Mart isn't recruiting the best and the brightest... |

When my male friends see any of my nudes:
"So, did ya hit that?"
I never give them the luxury of an answer.
Oh and my mom: "You don't sleep with all those women do you?"
Oy!

Heard that one too!!! Hate it when they ask: "How many x-zoom does your camera have?" (While my 16-35 is on my camera) "Only 2x??? Mine has 10X and fits in my pocket, you got ripped." |
Go over the whole range--my shortest lens is 12mm, longest is 300mm, so that's a 25x zoom, then add in as much digital zoom as you want.
Or say that you can "upgrade" the camera to a 600x zoom by getting an 8mm fisheye and a Canon 1200mm with 2 2x extenders (just don't tell them the 1200mm is an $80,000 lens);-) |

Don't laugh--that has actually happened to me twice...and they were my kids in the photos! Plus, I had to prove I was the photographer like Kharma and many of the rest of you. Then, the manager and brainiac on the register actually wanted to lecture me about the appropriateness of my subject matter...living in the buckle of the Bible Belt I often worry about how much influence this environment has on my kids...

I do pretty well with my little P&S. Every so often I'll get work into a show and maybe even win a ribbon. The first thing my fellow photographers ask after congratulating me is, "So what kind of equipment are you using?" When I point to the 5mp Coolpix dangling from my neck (because my parents always want a photo of me next to my entry), they either look angry/irritated/depressed because their $3000 gear was beaten by a $250 P&S that clearly doesn't deserve any recognition whatsoever or they ask me, "So when are you going to get a real camera?"
I have a "real camera". It takes pictures.
:P
