"Do you always shoot before the camera is in focus?"

This one is true and happened two days ago when I was buying some new lenscaps, although a little cruel.

There was an older guy in the camera store and he was telling everyone why he wouldn't change to digital. The basis of his argument was that digital cameras just don't feel like real cameras - or his old Minolta SLR to be more specific.

The assistant then handed him a Nikon D70s and a Canon 30D with the same equivalent lens on each. (These guys are dead neutral - and they had a Nikon D200 in stock!) Anyhow, the old chap plays with both cameras for a few moments and a smile starts to spread across his face.

"Well..." he said. "These are real cameras as they feel substantial in my hands, got real weight, feel like they can do the job."

I overhead one of the assistants in the background say to one of his colleagues soto voce:

"Bet his wife doesn't say that about him!"

Had to walk out before being seduced by the D200 as I could not control my laughter!

When my wife and I first met I had just gotten into photography but she had a friend (we'll call her Kim) that had a 35mm SLR. Kim did good work and had been shooting their family portraits for a long time.

When she decided she wanted a camera she told me, "your's takes great pictures, but I want a good camera like Kim's"

How many megapixels is your camera?

Six? I saw a new one at Target that is a lot smaller and has 8 megapixels. It's a lot cheaper too.

Stock answer to that question: 'It interpolates to 24'

would you ask friends or relatives to build you a house or paint it or clean it regularly.....for free...?

"is it possible you could take a few pictures in this birthday/wedding/babtism/graduation - nothing much, just a few photos you know...(hopefully I don´t have to pay...) just so they can keep this memory forever..."

"could you retouch my grandparents old photos, make them good, nothing much, just a tiny makeover...(hopefully I don´t have to pay...)"

"they are so cute my grandchildren....could I just stop by at your studio next weekend, nothing much, just a few so I can hang it on my wall and show everyone...(can´t believe I will have to for that....)"

Tell them it's a proper digital camera and that film belongs to the Luddites.

This has given me an idea - next time anyone tries that one I'm going to answer 'yeah, sure - my pleasure, can you just get my car fixed while I work on the photos - that would be great'

When they see my small camera:

"You're really the photographer?"

I've started carrying my tripod with me even when I know I won't need it, just for show :P

Heard that one too!!! Hate it when they ask: "How many x-zoom does your camera have?" (While my 16-35 is on my camera) "Only 2x??? Mine has 10X and fits in my pocket, you got ripped."

You should carry a portfolio of your work with you too and show them what you're able to do with it. You do nice work.

A friend (absolutely no camera experience): "Mind if I hold/fiddle with/look over your camera?"
Me: I'd rather not... Thinkng: Yeah right! I'm gonna let you hold my baby for which I worked a ton of overtime for

The reason I say this is that I had a bad experience when I bought my first DSLR: a film Canon Rebel.

I had the camera at work and put it down to go talk to a colleague. When I came back, another colleague had picked up the camera and was manually forcing the focus on the lens without putting it into Manual first!

Since that day I haven't let anyone touch my gear unless thay have some knowledge of lenses and DSLRs.

It's not so much that is "said" per se, as the "attitude" of some local competitions that have amateur/professional color and bw categories and then a separate category for digital.

I have not joined the local camera club because of this. They still seem to have a digital-bashing attitude.

"How many pictures can fit on that?"

"Only 200!, Mine can fit over 1500 and it's only a 64MB card"
