In conversation with a friend with too much money: "I also have a nikon D-something, I think..."

Heard that one too!!! Hate it when they ask: "How many x-zoom does your camera have?" (While my 16-35 is on my camera) "Only 2x??? Mine has 10X and fits in my pocket, you got ripped."

I have got that a few times - The only real response is that I slep all the stuff around for the weight lifting practice.

We had color and B&W slide (novice and advanced) and color and B&W print (novice and advanced). The club is pushing very hard for digital conversion and is starting a digital (novice and advanced) catagory. I find it rather amusing as all my slides and prints were digital.

I still really hate the assumption that, because I have an SLR, I know how to use a P&S. I usually hear, "How can you not know how to do it when you have THAT camera?"

I was recently at a wedding (as a guest) and I had my 35mm 2 and 85mm 1.8. A friend saw me switching them and asked, "What's the difference?" to which I replied, "One's longer than the other".

He thought I was making fun of him and said, "No s**t, Sherlock".

The one I hear most often is, "How many pixels is that?" followed closely by, "How many pictures can you take with that?"

My response to the second question is usually, "About 14. Then I have to rest a while."

"Wow, those are good pictures...they look almost like they were done by a REAL photographer." ;)

I decided to convert a graphic arts class unit on photography to include traditional 35mm SLR cameras and digital SLRs. Actually had a parent say to me she didn't understand why we were spending time and valuable tax dollars on a fad. Want to point out to her her so-called "fad" will never fade and she can take her valuable tax dollars and well...you know...

My favorite - and happens EVERYTIME I go out shooting at the beach, or any public environment - I'm schlepping 80lbs of equipment and carry camera with a big white lens and SOME Einstein HAS to ask:

Oh are you a photographer?

NO DAMMIT, I'M HERE TO SHINE YOUR SHOES!

Haha! "No, I'm an alien using this equipment to search for intelligent life on this planet. Still looking..."

Yea, I get, "hey, can you take a picture of us." and then handed this itty bitty thing and I'm like, "Duh, how do you turn it on?"

As far as the comps go, usually I just enter the film ones because the Digital category is usually categorized as digital enhancement or manipulation, which I do very little.

"WOW! These pics are great! Your almost like a real photographer. You should talk to a real photographer and maybe you can assist them at like weddings or something, that could be fun! ..."

I *AM* a real photographer, thankyouverymuch.

whenever I get shots printed at the local Wal-Mart,

Walmart: "I'm sorry you can't have these. These look like they were done by a professional. You will need written permission from the photographer."

Me: "I am the photographer. Thank you very much for thinking they look professional."

Walmart: "Are you a professional?"

Me: "Not really."

Walmart: "Then we need proof that these are your pictures. Do you have the CD or card you brought them in on?"

Me: "No, I uploaded them via the Internet, last night."

Walmart: "We need proof that you are the photographer."

Me: "So, if I bring in a letter saying that I have permission to print my pictures, we can avoid this."

Walmart: "Yes."

Me: "I need to bring in a letter that says, "Karma Shuford has the right to make prints from these files. Signed, Karma Shuford"

Walmart: "Yes. And it needs to be on letterhead."

(And I know they are doing their jobs, and "protecting" the photographer, but the systems they have in place to do this are assinine and ineffective, and time consuming.)

"Oh, you should get a picture of that!" "And that!" "And that!"

Maybe YOU should have a camera.

LOL - my coworkers do this to me all the time! "Becky, come look at this! You need to get a picture of that!" Most of the time the angle is wrong, the light is bad, or I took twelve pictures of the same thing when it happened last year and the year before. I don't usually have my camera with me at work, but when I do I humor them and usually delete it when I get home.

The gallery I usually submit to has three categories: color, b/w, and "alternative process". So digital works in all three for them, but anything overly manipulated or hand painted or what have you goes in the third category.

I think next time you should reply with: "No, I'm not a professional, I just have a very expensive camera"

Heheh... at my sister's wedding, a childhood friend who is now a studio pro was hired to do the photography. I pulled him aside beforehand to tell him that I would be taking about a million photos, and that if I was ever in the way to let me know.

Back in my Camera selling days we got this all the time, we had one woman that would come in and ask "Are any of you going to take pictures of...." Then come back after whatever event and want free copies.

Your reply: Can I see the letter stating your qualified to print my pictures.
