You guys are so harsh-you never look beyond the obvious, sometimes it is a great picture when it isn't "perfect"

slightly out of focus/ too close for your camera I think. Shadows are distracting at bottom and right too

I think you could have improved this with brighter lighting and focus. If you meant to have a "soft focus", I don't think it applies for a texture photo.

Your probably getting lots of comments about 'not in focus', right? That's my primary observation on how you could improve this image. You've found a great subject for texture, but you need a sharp focus to show that texture. I might also play with the position of the main stem; either move it a bit to the left, or try a few shots with it forming more of a diagonal into the photo.
07/26/2002 03:00:00 PM
Is this deliberate soft focus?
07/26/2002 02:59:00 PM
Your leaf doesn't appear sharp. Possibly you got too close for your camera to focus, or your shutter speed was a little slow. Macro requires a little more steadiness (or a tripod) because a small amount of camera movement is a larger precentage of the picture field.

I like the composition but would prefer sharper focus to better show the relief of the smaller veins.
07/26/2002 12:53:00 AM
out of focus, and underexposed.
07/25/2002 08:37:00 PM
out of focus and bad lighting. Also, the stem could've gone from lower left corner to near the upper right corner to be more interesting.

Nice close-up of the veins. Would have been better with a sharp focus.
07/24/2002 09:12:00 PM
Kinda blurry

For those that are just learning, like me.

Composition: Scoring in this area is based on basic composition of a picture and includes the rule of thirds, balance, cropping, and curved and diagonal lines. Subject matter that does not lend itself to the picture or otherwise unwanted is also considered here.

Originality: Scoring in this area is based on pictures or concepts that I have seen, as well as how much effort you have invested in the picture. Usually a little something that sets it aside from a snapshot. Does it make me want to come back for another look? You know things like that.

Technical Aspects: Focus, exposure, lighting, and other special effects (done by the camera), and post processing are all considered in this category.

Meets Challenge: This is based on my interpretation of if you, have/have not, met the challenge. This is fairly simple but quite important for this site.

There are many sites that can give you assistance in achieving better skills in photography, but I think the best way to learn is to take pictures and show them to other people. Believe me when it is a good one you will know it.

Good luck!

Good texture, just needs to be a little less blurry.
07/24/2002 03:00:00 PM
Could have been so good! This is very similar to a shot I wanted to do. Lack of focus really lets it down.
07/24/2002 12:47:00 PM
the lack of sharpness does not work for me in this picture. it detracts from the nice texture that is present, but poorly rendered. i think this image would have worked much better as a black and white... in focus, of course. ~mcmurma

culd have focused in better
07/23/2002 11:14:00 PM
I like the idea. The colors seem flat and it is a bit out of focus.
07/23/2002 06:01:00 PM
lack of focus and contrast spoils what could have been a good photo.
07/23/2002 02:20:00 PM
leaves make a great shot for texture, especially the underside of them. what hurts your shot (in my opinion) is that it's not in focus. did you maybe get closer than your camera can focus at? i do that a lot with mine and it always beeps as if it has focused and then i upload the photos and they are all unsharp... sigh. -- gr8photos (3)

seems a little out of focus

seems out of focus

I know that soft focus may be a matter of choice, but when you want to show texture, it just doesn't work. Soft focus hides texture, it doesn't bring it to the forefront. But that's just me :)
07/23/2002 06:25:00 AM
Blurred
07/23/2002 02:20:00 AM
seems a bit out of focus
07/23/2002 12:49:00 AM
The soft feel of the shot lends itself to the leaf.
07/22/2002 11:08:00 PM
a bit out of focus?!
07/22/2002 10:27:00 PM
did you mean for it to be blurry? I would have preferred it sharper. A little brighter would have been good too. But I like the leaf as a subject, always good for texture.
07/22/2002 09:52:00 PM
Too blurry
07/22/2002 09:29:00 PM
Nice texture, but it seems a bit out of focus ot me. I think a sharper focus would show the veins even better. karmat
07/22/2002 05:40:00 PM
I can definatly see the texture of the veins in this leaf, but the whole image appears to me to be out of focus, you may be too close for your camera.
07/22/2002 05:20:00 PM
Focus, focus, focus. *4* -balynch
07/22/2002 02:51:00 PM
Does not apper to be in focus. I'm even guilty of taking another plant picture.
07/22/2002 01:22:00 PM
seems to be a bit out of focus
07/22/2002 12:44:00 PM
Not a bad composition and a very interesting leaf pattern. I think there is a problem with sharpness though. Some unsharp mask would help a lot with creating sharp edge detail.
07/22/2002 11:36:00 AM
would gain a lot if it was in focus - I bet you get tons of this kind of comments. I still like the picture a lot, the grid structure reminds me of terraced rice fields. 5 beegee

Needs focus work,I don't think fuzzy focus adds to texture.
07/22/2002 08:51:00 AM
Photo seems slightly fuzzy, but the texture is great.
07/22/2002 08:51:00 AM
Focus seems to be soft. I like the veins though.
07/22/2002 08:39:00 AM
out of focus
07/22/2002 06:16:00 AM
this photo needs to have focus... It appears that the entire image is out of focus... the texture concept is nice, but the complete lack of focus keeps this from being competitive. = 4 - jmsetzler
