a few dozen drips .....
used 12mm & 20mm extenders withthe zoom
curves & pushed chroma USM crop

no burning / dogding or fancy modes

post challenge note:
wow .. & thankyou again ...
i was aiming for just the image in the drop & the reflected lines on the surface were totally serendipitous & totally blew me away -

other things to notice within the image:
the weird little scream face at the base of the tower
the pattern in the background seems to have refracted in a very strange way
the wave within the drop is due to a malformation (i think) on the rear of the drop
(all other images i have done it is straight)
the background is a sheet of plotter paper that i made ~roughly a month before the challenge.
the blue is more refracted light off the surface
the full size image has been gracing my computers as a background for a while & does not have any of the morie artifact
in the drip or on the surface patterns

thank you

Post post note:
oh it's a water drop all right - it's a long exposure but the flash is roughly 120us or so ;) for repeatability i use a 'laser' drop sensor. but i don't determine when the drop falls (it's periodic (but you can't anticipate it in a dark room), open the shutter on BULB, wait for the flash, close the shutter :)

Honestly, this is one of your best shots. I can't believe I didn't notice this sooner. Great shot.
12/08/2006 10:14:51 AM
It's quite a trip following all the curved lines in your portfolio. Great work.
11/13/2005 05:11:13 PM
Ok....fess up! That's not a drop at all, is it?? It's glass for sure, but I haven't figured it out yet.
11/11/2005 03:05:14 PM
Man this is awesome... freakin amazing. Would you consider doing a "How'd They Do That?" tutorial or something???
11/08/2005 07:54:14 PM
This is very impressive! Congratulations on a really great shot!
11/07/2005 11:33:04 AM
A water-drop shot that's DIFFERENT! Congrats on your ribbon!

Re. post post note: thank you for explanation. You managed to set up serious water drop research lab with laser drop sensors and all that stuff that usualy makes a lab lab :) The more I shoot the more I am convinced - good photo rarely comes out effortless...
11/07/2005 09:49:22 AM
Excellent shot. Congrats on another ribbon.
11/07/2005 08:09:27 AM
congrats - amazing patterns

Great capture. This is a top 5 if not a ribbon. I'm guessing this took some nice equipment because you are using a) macro b) have a nice thick depth of field and c) froze the motion very well. Hmmm, now that I think about it, I don't think this actually is what we are meant to think it is. The two tiny drops on the large globe I think give it away. Also, in my experience of shots like this, the drop is too big compared to the column. Still a great imitation. 10

So - is it real or imitation? I also suspect those two tiny bubles inside. Long exposure also tell us a different story. Anyway, it does not make a photo less interesting.

One of my highest rated! I'd like to know your set up. This was awesome. Congrats! :)
11/07/2005 04:26:42 AM
This is wonderful shot, but I couldn't not to notice that your shutter speed is 10.8sec??? With that setting this is impossible to shoot. (?)
11/07/2005 03:13:48 AM
Just a wonderful image, congrats on the ribbon.
11/07/2005 01:36:38 AM
Wow, this is absolutely amazing! I love it. wanna be my teacher? Congrats!

Congrats! A new twist on the ol' water drop!
(and they keep saying it shouldn't be done...shame on them!)
11/07/2005 12:19:36 AM
Congratulations on your Yellow. Highly impressive!
11/07/2005 12:17:10 AM
Congrats! Loved this shot, sorry I couldn't make it 20 10's.
11/07/2005 12:14:10 AM
Congrats ...cool shot!
11/07/2005 12:07:42 AM

nice capture. the swirly lines are very cool.
11/06/2005 03:57:52 PM
This one caught my eye, great shot.
11/06/2005 02:43:02 PM
Great capture and I love all the swirlies. How did you do that? Can't wait to find out. A 10.
11/06/2005 02:25:52 PM
Top 10 is my guess on this one.
11/06/2005 07:08:11 AM
8 - Good and 'interesting'. Criticism; difficult, but maybe more colors, if apt. Seems a slight 'gamma' type issue with the colors surrounding the black, but could be my monitor.
11/05/2005 10:01:08 PM
you will probably snag blue with this one...marvelous
11/05/2005 02:54:06 PM
Wow! Sharpness is simply breathtaking. Symetry of water drop is perfect. You must be a patient men/women.
Maybe a bit of light from below would have lighten up the water and the top of the water drop that is too dark imo.
11/05/2005 10:07:16 AM
An amazing shot. Love all the detail and see something new everytime I view this image. Creative, Imaginative, Lovely. Sharp focus and Excellent composition. Great Job --9--
11/05/2005 09:47:47 AM
the detail in the water is incredible, very well done! good luck on the challenge!
11/04/2005 07:23:14 PM
Wow, weird! :)
So close and you used some interesting psychedelic backgrounds that refract well. 7
11/03/2005 10:34:17 AM
Ohhh, GORGEOUS!! I am a succer for water shots, especially in action. I really appreciate this one. You get a big 10 from me! NICE and clear, crisp, and I love the designs on the water!
11/02/2005 04:55:38 PM
the reflections on the liquid are fabulous. as for the refraction in the drop/splash, I can't help but wish that the drop showed more of the spiral and not so much black. very interesting use of a classic technique.
11/02/2005 03:47:50 PM
What is it????
11/02/2005 09:02:34 AM
I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the water drop shots...but this is awesome! The "op art" background and reflections make this, nice lighting too...what a great idea.
11/01/2005 05:30:21 PM
very interesting shoot, how many times did it take to get it right?
11/01/2005 04:30:48 PM
I am sick to death of water drop shots, so to create such a strong image using a subject that I am beginning to hate is an amazing achivment, which i put down to great set up and perfect lighting, not to mention a unique POV. wow
11/01/2005 04:04:16 PM
that's awesome
11/01/2005 02:09:18 PM
I could sit and look at this for ages. Great DOF. The splashes of colour at the rear give it all a bit of life.
11/01/2005 09:02:09 AM
Very interesting picture. Love the lines, great reflection
11/01/2005 05:09:05 AM
Ok this one has me intrigued, whatever way this was achieved it is a superb result. I can't wait till the challenge is over to learn more about this one.

amazing focus in the photo. very nicely done.
10/31/2005 04:59:55 PM
what a great shot, abstract and fun!!
10/31/2005 08:22:57 AM
this one just stops you dead in your tracks!
10/31/2005 03:24:39 AM
I didn't thimk someone could pull off a different and excellemt take on this type of shot but you have. With the low angle closeup and good DOF it looks great
10/31/2005 02:19:48 AM
thats just swirly fun... I like the whole thing..
10/31/2005 01:43:11 AM
Great shot! Personally, I am pretty tired of the water drop shots, but this one was very nicely done. I love the image reflected off the pool of water as well as the drop. This should score well.
10/31/2005 12:43:54 AM
WOW. This is amazing. Is that a water drop???? I can't wait to hear how you did this.
