This was my highest rated photo. Congrats on the top 20. If you care, what I love about it:

- The eyes in shadow, conveying sorrow
- The hands gripped in front of the face, as if afraid
- The deep shadows and highlights contrasting against each other - can't have the darkness without the light!

It just me stare at it, which is a good thing in MY book! :)

I felt sure that this was your work Nico... And as usual, I thought it was flawless (10)! I had this one picked to ribbon for sure - sorry that it didn't finish higher, but top 20 ain't bad out of 364!

Congrats again on a beautiful & powerful image. I'm sure we'll continue to see great things from you!

Just my 2 cents...

Jimmy

I'm not so sure why this didn't do a little better. One of my favourite images from the challenge.

Congrats on your top 20 finish, but it should have placed a little higher IMO.

I really like this picture, but I think a slightly tighter cropping so the part of the arm on the bottom right and bottm left corners would have improved the picture.

Like the line of the hands very much, and it's a nice light and shadow study. Very nice.

Blind yet seen . . . substantial but not . . . directionless digits . . . illuminated and dark. Excellent. Bravo!

Very well done. The image gives off that disconcerting feeling that we often find in ourselves. Bumping up.

A very haunting image. Making the eyes black holes is a stroke of genius. The tonal range is good and technical quality and composition itself of the image fine.

The are some minor technical issues that will affect this image's score.

There are a number of tiny white specks that are distracting to the viewer.

The fingers closest to the camera are out of focus and orovide a minor distraction as well. That may have been intentional but will not appear that way to viewers.

Lastly, the transition areas from dark to shadow on the left side of the image looks unnatural. But that is probably a necessary artifact of your post processing.

Overall this is a very fine image that should score in the upper tier of the challenge.

Sorry for the form-letter type commentary. I’m going to try to give almost everyone at least this breakdown to start. I would be happy to offer a more detailed opinion if you would like, though I don’t consider myself a very knowledgeable photographer.
Here is how I broke down my score for your submission.
Content: 1/4 (Is the subject compelling? Does the choice of content match the challenge?)
Composition: 2/2 (Is the work well balanced and successful?)
Color/Light: 1/2 (Is light and or color used with skill and artistic intent?)
Clarity: 1/2 (Is the picture in focus? Are the elements clear?)
Total:5/10

Very thoughtful and emotional at the same time. I'm too new to understand why, but I like it. Thanks

I just love this image! Great pose, great tones, great balance of light and dark. Just soft enough, just sharp enough. The lack of detail in the eyes is perfect for the challenge.

You are my green ribbon winner for this challenge - Green ribbon? It's the one entry that makes me green with envy...that makes me want to throw my camera away and take up knitting instead. So I'm giving you a 3 out of sheer spite...not really a 10..and a bet that you are a top three winner;)

In this lighting the model seems both niave (the hands) and fearsome (the shadowed eyes). Fantastic example of two contrasting embodiments of darkness.

Regardless - simple idea executed nicely. Sharp, and interestingly unique portrait

Yes it is (Noir I mean). The lighting is great, but I especially love the pose ... the fingers seem to be writhing in some dark anguish. On the other hand, he could be taking a photograph with an invisible camera. It's striking, and it's very dark on at least a couple of levels. 9.

Love the hands and shadows. Maybe crop some of the forehead and a touch at the bottom.
