Pretty simple... I covered a big sheet of cardboard with wallpaper and cut a hole in it. Attach a frame and have my daughter stand behind it while my wife drops a baseball. The background is my TV with a DVD frame on pause (no time to find a better background, unfortunately).

More details and outtake posted HERE.

Hmm... I just noticed that I had 358 votes on this one. That number was up to 396 before the close last night, which means at least 38 votes were tossed. I guess a lot of people either didn't vote 20% or the trolls were out in force. Hey, you missed a couple... what's with the twos? ;-)

Scalvert first let me congratulate you on your blue ribbon and say it was well deserved. I did not get to vote in the challenge because of time reasons but this has to be one of many very creative photographs in the challenge. I just want to say thanks for taking the extra effort to put together a nice illusion photograph and describing with pictures how you achieved the out come. I'm not taking away from any of the other photographers because there were many that did a great job as well but yours [after looking through the entries] stood out on top for me. Again Congratulations and I know you will see more blue in the future with the efforts you put forth in your entries. And to all others that did the same congrats as well. I'm reminded of something someone once told me, "you can't be jealous of what someone has unless you are willing to do what they did to get it". I think this is a good example of that. My first though was, "man I wish I could do this type of work", then I realized I could if I tried in the same capacity as you did. Thank you for a fine piece of work.

Another yet absolutely stunning photo by a master.

I am ever so glad that I joined DPC, as I have had the good fortune, in a very short period of time, to view some absolutely astounding photography prepared by unbelievably talented individuals.

Surprising as it may seem Mr. Scalvert, I did have a good idea as to how the set up for this photograph was done. I am slowly but surely learning a greal deal from you and others in this realm.

The photos you grace us with are indeed to be marvelled at, but perhaps (I may sound rather self centered in saying this), what I treasure the most, are the lessons you provide in addition to your artwork.

Thank you ever so much for being the caring and sharing person that you are!!!

and skippy nails another one (it only took me 27 minutes to ID his shot)! great work, absolutely great work, shannon! congrats!

and, btw, i don't think most people realize JUST HOW HARD YOU HAD TO WORK AT THIS to make this image happen! it goes a quite a bit beyond what's in the liner notes, so far...like how many clicks it took to get it just right! if this was any other child, they'd be after him for breaking child labor laws...LOL

A very cool effect proving the high caliber of talent that resides in DPC. Amazing.

What makes it amazing is that here a special effect has been raised to a mascot of Americana. Oftentimes we start to follow an idea and we force things into place. Sometimes the results are a mish-mash. This, however, is that supreme exception where the spirit of creation takes the drivers seat. Let us examine the image.

First is probably a 4x8 board with a cutout. A mosrt appropiate background to confound the viewer. The simple frame and last but not least, the model. I mean, look at this kid in baseball gear. Look at the expression, the healthy look, the gaps between the teeth. Sweet enough? Now, look at the wall paper in relationship to the color stitching of the baseball and look at how the baseball is not at all sharp but just the right fuzziness to aid the effect. Now study the angle and the passive position of the right hand as opposed to the active left. Well, here is a special effect that is surpassed by the message it delivers. A truly impressive and an unforgettable image.

Great idea, execution and technique. this will surely be up the top somewhere. My only criticism is the green band behind the boy. It's a bit weird and could have been more effective if this looked more tangible or recognisable. Crop is a bit tight to the ball, but otherwise it's great.

Well ... this is something :) ... very curios how you did it ...
An improvement, maybe, it would be the position of the ball and the clarity of it. I know that maybe like this suggests movement, but I think that if would be clear, it would still give you the sensation tha the girl wants to catch the ball.
Congrats on your photo. Very good ... 9 ... no ... 10 for the idea and everithing.

Wow, I can't figure this one out. It's apparent that the frame is open and the girl is leaning out of it. But how in the world did you get that backdrop? It appears to be an illuminated/projected screen given the moire effect. I'll be eagerly tuning in later to hear the details! 9
