Challenge: Backlighting (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Nikon D100
Location: In my studio (dining room table)
Date: Sep 4, 2004
Date Uploaded: Sep 4, 2004

OK,
I had a really hard time choosing between 3 photos. My second pick probably would score better than this, but I really like somethinh about the crazy composition of this photo.

What I did was...
turned my 35-70 2.8 lens around, set my flash on a table top tripod and made a black snoot out of paper, pointed it at the flower in the background, the drop is sprayed onto a squash vine with a little mist, and fired away. It's really hard to get that damn drop in focus. So the only light visible is what is bounced off of the yellow flower. The drop and the flower are about 2 inches away from each other, it's the only practical way to fill the whole drop with the image. placed a non reflective black backdrop on a tripod to reduce any chance of excess light bouncing back into the lens. There are a few spots that I couldn't clean up for the challenge, but I've since removed for printing!

Hopefully I do well in this competition, I really love this shot. I think I might get some low scores for "Not meeting the challenge"
whatever to them! "Backlighting is the idea of shining light at an object from behind, or lighting areas behind the object you want to highlight. " I chose the second part!

Post Processing:
Crop, levels (just a tiny bit) and USM.
added a border to spite all those people who hate borders. :P

You have a very fertile imagination Eric and two ribbons and a near miss in little over a month as a member shows a pretty formidable talent.

I don`t think that this is the last time that I`ll be congratulating you on a ribbon success. :)

Speaking out of line here, but I'm pretty sure this flower is called a Brown-Eyed Susan (or sometimes called a Black-Eyed Susan).

Eric, I really like this shot...good work!

Did you have a DQ request? Nice eh? Means that people don't believe it's a photo and that you are good...
I wish I would get one...

OK on a serious note. I like this picture love the color and the background, the only thing that disturbs me is that I can not make out what it is I am looking at.
