Experimentation: pure and simple.
Not thrilled with the results, but the journey was worthwhile.

This looks like fun so would like to try.

Is there a tutorial that shows how to do overlays for Photoshop Elements 5?

Number 3:
I combined with to obtain .

Opened texture and photo, copied texture and placed on top of photo.
Set opacity of texture to 70%
Made copy of photo and placed above texture covering with layer mask.
painted over layer mask to reveal Mary's face erasing most of the texture on her eyes.
Made a copy of the texture and placed it on top of Mary's face and set the blending mode to Multiply. Set opacity to 50%.
Made a copy of photo and put on top set opacity to 45% added layer mask and painted again to get Mary's skin the way I wanted it. I also desaturated this layer a little.
Created new empty layer and set blending mode to soft light for a dodge/burn overlay layer. Darkened the edges.
Sharpened
