When the sky challenge is over, if you post your original photo (without edits) and your challenge entry we might be able to offer some suggestions. |
I noticed that a lot of people use Neat Image. Why do people prefer that over the noise reduction tool in PS? By the way, Hotshot7, the noise reduction tool in Photoshop is under Filter>Noise>Reduce Noise. What it does is blur things a little, so it's a trade-off between sharp focus and noise. If you're working under advanced editing rules, you can use noise reduction and then put a mask on that layer and remove the noise reduction from the areas that need sharp focus. |

There was a neat image / PS comparison in a recent magazine, which showed that neat image tends to give more pleasing results than PS for the same photos. |

Submitted to brown.
Then unsubmitted after thinking that actually, I would give my own image a 4.
Need to allow more time for the next set of challenges I think! |

Neat Image is all but de rigeur for dpc. I used it (trial version) in my dirt entry and regretted it, because it cleaned up the dirt (not that that matters for the score). I tried 'add noise' from the filter menu in my for sale entry and now I'm inundated with it's a bit grainy comments. Go figure duh.
It seems to me that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Neat Image, especially the paid-for version, gives you a lot of options to go in and adjust what it's doing. In my case that would definitely entail learning a whole lot first. Sometimes the PS noise filter helps. The 'median' thing is worth a try, with fingers hovering over Ctrl-Z when it all goes hazy.
'Noise' in painting/picture terms, relates to elements that detract from/ do not contribute to the overall composition of the picture. In digital photography terms, it's the grainy effect that you also used to get by pushing film. That sort of effect could just as well be called texture, which dpc doesn't recognise but team suck does, right?
The 'noise' of my brown entry is neither added nor removed.

this is an image with a lot of grain, where it works with the image. well, i think so, and i'm happy with that...
this is an image with a lot of grain where i wish it didn't have any
and then this is it cleaned up with noise ninja
i find when using n.n. in advanced processing, i apply it to a copy of background, then layer mask just the areas where i want it. sometimes noise reduction can kill texture.
another trick i've discovered using n.n. is to bump up the contrast to 20, then adjust the strength and smoothness until you're hapy with the noise reduction. that tends to keep the textures in the detaily bits.

I'm a bit puzzled by this. Why submit something you think is crappy?

For love of the update button? That's my excuse anyway. LOL. I'm quite happy with my Pink Floyd though.

Aiee, I had a half decent shot at the brown ribbon for "Brown", but just as I went to upload my image, I noticed the date in the RAW data was wrong; it was set for 12/20.. So, rather than take a needless DQ, I'm going to miss this challenge too. After Brown is done, I'll upload the image to my portfolio so we can all have a good laugh at it. Don't worry, it's not a picture of poo (though I'm kinda afraid of looking through the Brown entries for that reason..).
Sadly, my profession is not all that photogenically glamorous, but I'll try to figure something out.
It's nice to be able to breathe normally again.

For pet portrait, which is good for me :) PP did seem to be a high-scoring challenge though, loads of six-scores.
I think I'll be in AA Battery, but, for now, I have no entry :( |

Creative freedom of the Suck League? Good luck to Chris in Pink Floyd. I submitted to Pink Floyd even if I don't know who that is. |

Strange that two members on the same team have cats that look eerily alike. Vanilla looks just like Luna (my cat) when she was a kitten. Just thought it was bizarre :/ |

There are so many great images from Team Suck I don't know where to begin! First a huge congratulations to juliboc on your plus 6 score! Your images just keep getting better and better. And bryantbus, what a beautiful dog portrait. 6th place! Not to mention the amazing blue eyes in the cat portrait by blue moon. In fact, all the pet portraits are adorable. Way to go, Team Suck! |

When I got in it was at 6.2 then I went down. So I got a 6th you only have to send in the original if your in the top 5 right? Any way I have not got any notice to do so.
