I view the post-processing vs. "pure" thing this way.
I know how to take decent snapshots. My family and friends regularly tell me my entries are terrific. Okay, I've fooled 'em so far. :)
But I'm here not to take better snapshots; instead, I'm here to learn how to push my artistic interests.
I think the line between photography and digital art is necessarily a blurry one. This site has done a good job of providing two different levels of editing as steps between out-of-the-camera and, say, Art ROFLMAO's more outlandish creations.
I'm inspired by the people who only need to tweak contrast to take better shots in-camera, and I'm inspired by the amazing "saves" to look more closely at my own pics and see what I can do with them.
I'm also inspired by folks who've shown me that big-time cropping is necessary and ok. Oh, and I had no idea banana stands were legal, either, so now I look forward to trying things like that!
So thanks to everyone in this thread who's published originals/finals AND who's contributed to the discussion. |

My highest score so far and highest finish (fith with 6.693 in Desolation II) - just a little bit of photoshop work...
Here is the original
It was shot in RAW so it was a simple matter of increasing the exposure and a bit of saturation |

While not so dramatic this is the one that cost me the most work. I was crazy to enter it in basic editing.

remarkably, it just took curves to bring out those colors (different curves for grass and sky)
NOTE to levyj413: the banana picture is on the very edge of what's allowed. show your picture to the SC beforehand if you try anything like that. there is no precise standard for that sort of thing.

I am so happy with how this shot came out as I have no artistic type shots of this cat. And the score and placing it came away with was just the cherry on the sundae. |

I doubt I'll ribbon in Free Study XII, but my entry really benefited from processing, so I'll post it here afterward. |

most of the processing here was done in RAW conversion. The images on the left are RAW conversions with "camera defaults"

The original
7th place in Rope. I guess I got it pretty much right in the camera except for the cropping. Very basic PS work. |

Third Place shadows (and only ribbon):
original final
My son in my kitchen at 10PM the night the challenge ended with a scrap of black cloth stuck to the wall, 2 daylight bulbs in Home depot shop lights wearing his Monty python lounge pants.
Taken in RAW: Crop, duo-tone, a couple swipes of healing brush, sharpen, highlight mask, save for web.
Yes, I have a dark blue kitchen. I'm weird, so sue me. ;) |

Original / final
The tint shift was done in Camera Raw, I didn't like the green.
My editing steps:
green light from directly behind dandy
raw open, change green light to cyanish
SS (<-- smart sharpen)
resize
SS
brightness/contrast
clone out some distracting spots
1 px border (useless yes, but larger border didn't fit into what I wound up with)
Lighting setup:
This thread discusses the lighting setup.

not a ribon or super high score but one of my highest and one I thought I did well with the processing.
entry
unprocessed
for processing i used many of the same steps in the dragonizer action but I used different blending modes for many of them. took a pretty good while to get a result I was happy with. |

Not a ribbon winner nor my highest scoring image but it is the most manipulated of my highest scoring pics.
