Well, many of you probably won't like this. But look at it for a while and think about what I'm trying to say. Anyway, yes, this is a shadow. Any time you block light with something, that something casts a shadow. Ha!

My son, with the declaration of independence on his back. Because he's a teenager I almost called it teen spirit or something but legacy said more of what I meant to say.

Wow! I'm really surprised this morning. There are many other images I thought were either better or more DPC friendly. Thank you! This was taken at the last minute on the last day. I spent all week mulling over a surrealist image that escapes this early in the morning (the woman with viola holes on her back). The positioning of my son is taken from that (mirrored) except his arms are raised. The chain was also left on purpose...

Editing nothing really: crop, sharpen, convert to duotone, curves, sharpen again, resize for web.

Thanks again!

Ya know... This shot has continued to haunt and grow on me since I first saw it - there are so many levels of meaning here. I love the fact that you emblazened the words of the Declaration of Independence on his back (symbolizing our forefathers who literally bore the scars of making and endorsing those words). The unrecognizable and almost slavelike position of your son supports the fact that these ideals have been upheld by the actions (and on the backs) of many people that we will never know. I didn't score this highly enough during the challenge (I only gave it a 7, but I'm glad to see that it still ribboned). I've now added it to my favorites and would score it a 10 today. I've learned a lot from this photo (both technically and creatively).

I think the most ironic thing about this picture now is that I am enrolled in the JROTC program. It makes it so much more... I think I'm looking for provocative.

-The son.

I'm SO glad to see this do well! It was absolutely one of my top picks, and I greatly feared the voters would pan it as "not shadows", plus "it's been done before"; but not like this, and not so well. Congrats!

SUPERB ! Congrats on your ribbon. VERY bold...MAJOR impact...yet not so over the top that it stops it from being wall art. This my friend would make a wonderful war/political statement.

I'm always amazed when people like you come up with such creative challenge ideas. The tones and sharpness are incredible and technical image quality outstanding. The wrinkles on the lower back are a little distracting but this is a fantastic image. Kudos for such a great picture.
