I personally enjoy minimal just as much as i enjoy the rest of the challenges, and that includes expert. as long as we are not swamped with either.

If you don't like the challenge don't enter it, simple.
If you don't like the site, follow the arrows to the exit and mind the door.

no but but coming from a newbie, it makes you wonder how many others are turned off.

interesting point, sans a few of the photographers here, i see images that have very little impact. i spend time daily on 500px looking at images that carry the passion the photographer put into them i am usually in awe. there is one woman i follow on 500px who is amazing and i just found out the other day her images are composites. i was floored, they look so natural and real and most importantly, believable. I dont have that here. i find i never look through challenges to see what is there, i used to but then maybe i realized the level of quality or effort I see elsewhere is non-existant here. i dont strive to be as good or better than anyone here (except maybe a very small handful) the front page is littered with the same people, over and over, some are really good, others just learned how to game the dpc voters.

i hold out hope for this place when i see people like paul make the front page but then i quickly get disappointed when i see what else passes as ribbon worthy here more often than not.

This thread is sad to me.. being a newbie and just learning, it has been amazing on the things I have been able to pick up.. the membership cost I could pay tons more on tutorials and other websites.. due to this site, I no longer shoot in AUTO MODE and that is a HUGE HUGE deal to me.. When I shot my Eclipse moons, I had everything set up and the camera settings under 5 minutes and I didn't have to think about what the settings needed to be on, it just went there... it was all because of what I have learned on DPC and my close photography mentor friends..

Is it worth the cost? Sure.. do I love getting less than 5? Who does? In the end I don't care about the scores and I wonder if that drives ppl away sometimes .. this site holds more pack and punch and is a vital lifeline of learning, respect for others art and photos and a group of fabulous people who have taken out their time to show their talents and share what they know.. it means a lot to me.

Will I pay? I sure will, where else can I play around and start to test new waters forcing me with others pushing me along the way when I get freaked out or intimidated by stuff which is way out of my league of knowledge? This site helps me to keep going and it keeps me from making me be stuck in one spot of learning.. its the push that I really love here and I so appreciate all the support I have received in along the way.
It takes me to a new level of learning and that is why I joined.

I want my playground to stay around a bit :0)) If someone's in a funk about this site whether to pay or don't, it is ultimately their choice.. don't let that attitude pass by me..if others are showing this of why not they pay, why should I even bother if people don't care about things anymore? Its time for fire under some pants to get that fire going again and passion of that you once had to keep shooting and participating, or perhaps adopt a newbie, helping newbies like me because I know I am not the only one around and I am sure others just lurk and are scared to post something... we need all the help we can get :-)) Now, I have to learn my processing which is a pain in a half LOL.. People don't see the punch and quality here? TEACH US! SHOW US! We are still learning.. its what we want to know and learn.. sure looking at others and voting on other's photos are great, but it doesn't teach us the details of how to get there. I want to develop my own style not copy someone else.

Everyone has a passion and one thing we hold in common, is that we love our cameras and our photos. I will be sad if Langdon ever pulls the plug here, but I will never forget where my main learning has come from. Everything else is an excuse.

Shoot and be happy :-))

*deep sigh* Mike...this isn't Worth1K. I think anyone who finds Advanced restrictive should head over there. This is meant to be a photography site, not a PhotoChop one.

@ jgirl57...attagirl. That's the attitude that makes this site tick. Stick around please!!

Here I was hoping for challenges that were photography related.
Something like this flickr group except with voting.
www. flick. com/groups/photochallenge-org/discuss/ (can't post url links)
Instead I'm welcomed by the asshole brigade for bringing up valid points.

You guys know how to make a person feel welcome. With friends like these, who needs enemies?

And I'm out for good. You guys can keep your sandbox.

Fixed the URL for you.

And not all members are that grumpy, those that are, do tend to congregate in threads like this.

Jeez Mike, who peed in your cornflakes?! Everyone here knows that you're unhappy here and miserable. So why are you still here again?

Yeah, I agree, I think texture overlays are a bit much. But you were carrying on about learning how that woman was making mind-blowing images that turned out to be composites...you know that kind of thing only happens here in Expert.

But honestly, you're just going to come back another snarky comment, just as it's quite clear that there is no pleasing you. So snark away, dude.

This thread should probably go back into rant. The fighting has already chased away a newbie, and it's really not very productive.

I'm not so sure the "newbie" was chased away. Sounded like he had a chip on his shoulder already and had a ready soapbox to stand on. I couldn't help wondering if the "new" person was someone coming back around with a new username. Like someone that was already unhappy about things here. Just a thought.

I'm confused. What's the point of minimal?
I can't think of a context where I wouldn't do any editing in the real world.

I only use prime lenses. Can't crop? What am I supposed to do? Stand in a lake? Walk into traffic? Uri Geller myself up in the sky? I don't see the point of not allowing someone to crop. I'll argue the lack of other editing as well. I didn't realize it was this primitive before signing up. I think I'll pass.

You could be right. I haven't read the whole thread and I'm not here myself much anymore, but saw this...

When you talk to a new neighbor, do you and your family point out all of the things you hate about the area to them?

I'd say it's a certainty. In fact, I bet it was Mike. Seems to have been reading from the same script. You have to admit he was using a good disguise, capitalizing words and writing complete sentences.

The man's first post was moaning about how things tick here and to whine his discontent.. I simply showed him the door it is he who walked out of it with a final little moan.

You are welcome to hang me for it if you please but I have supported the site for many years and will for many more to come.

Fortunately, this site is primarily about photography.

These periodic challenges serve to test our photographic limits
and achieve new ones. And there are plenty of people on site to help in the process.

Sometimes it may be difficult to remember there are people of varying experience
who compete. I hope we can use some of our energy to help those folks along.

I understand not agreeing with everything that happens on this site but why try to change it like all the others like 500px, 1x, Worth, ViewBug and any other site thats not unique. All dpchallenge would become is another "ME TOO" product and IMO that would suck. Each site has their own advantages and disadvantages, so if you want to edit your pictures more than is allowed under the minimal, basic, or advanced rule set then do so and post them on flicker, 500px, 1x and those other sites. I'm not sure what your mission is by creating all the negative energy but damn dude take a step back and look at this site for what is and have some fun or go get laid. Either way chill!!

sometimes it takes someone to make noise to enact worthwhile change, if that makes me negative or appear miserable or unhappy so be it.

No hanging involved here Marac. I quite like you alive. :D

I just meant, those of us who have been here a long while tend to be a bit blunt and that's not always the best way to bring in new blood.

DPC really needs a Like button!

There you go suggesting things that need fixed. LOL

And truthfully I have a small list of things for Ken to blow up, I've just been waiting on DPC to go away so I can hand it to him.
