and some people live in the past and some move on! There is no need to drop in here with all your negativity and attitude. If you want to contribute then enter challenges, comment on photos, help people in the forums or just go away and stay away.

...and I for one view Simms comments as valid and certainly worthy of consideration. What some perceive as solely negative views are often a differing view of reality and it is only by comparing views that we can hope to actually see the truth.

Just another man's view.

karmat, I think you've touched on several points which may account for where we are currently.

The Internet was smaller
Digital photography was newer
Plus
Feedback on DPC is more honest and constructive than "feel good". Sites like Flickr and FB have spoiled would be 'togs who don't want to hear they're not extraordinary
DPC may be a victim of its own success: the number of photographers who started out here and went on to become "superstars" is quite impressive.
Many old timers now have RL matters which cut into their participation. Yet they're still here, even if they don't participate as much

And yet, we're still here. To all the people digging DPC's grave, your dumping and whining is the problem. Are there many fabulous DPCers who have left? Of course. But you are truly arrogant if you think they haven't been replaced by equally fabulous people.

Amen to that! What's up with all the negative nancies out there... ;)

As far as the number of entries go, is it possible that it started around the time when we started giving more challenges per week... therefore spreading out the participation rather than it actually going down?

Oops, forgot that one! Yes, that would also certainly affect the number of entries. But it's all these things together, not just any one of these things.

Amen to Constructive and honest critique! If I need to hear what a Wonderful photographer I R, FB is the place to go, but here, I don't think there isn't one person I can't learn something from! Self-improvement that's what's so special about this place. As an example look at Neat OMG she has found her "style" and is taking numbers n kicking behinds now... I don't know for sure, but I've got to think DPC had to be a contributing factor in her finding herself! There are some wonderful people that I study their work closely and try to adapt what I like about their "style" into mine.

And more challenges, well it may lower the number a tiny bit entry wise, but it also gives me more of a chance to pick what I know I might be more inspired in and give it a try! Personally I'm still waiting for a challenge with only 9 entries so I can enter and be a TT... LOL

One thing I will not miss about this place is how any negative feedback, no matter how obviously correct it is, is immediately piled upon as an attack upon the site by DPC patriots.

According to the patriot's logic, I have nostalgia and that's why challenge participation is way down.

I'm suffering from nostalgia and that's why Langdon cuts and pastes challenge topics without even reading them.

And some day you, too, will be suffering from nostalgia when you're unable to login.

Pfft to patriots.

Ok, who would these patriots be?

I didn't really see anyone get piled on, other than perhaps Simms, who has all the charm of a rattlesnake sometimes.

As for me, I think I've made my position clear, we really should thank Langdon for what he does provide, and try our best not to damn the man for having other priorities. Yes, he does annoyingly cut and paste topics sometimes, but it's been a while since that's happened, and for all you know he may have been dealing with a sick child, pressure at work, and a wife who constantly nags him about DPC being a competitor to her.. Of course, I'm not actually saying that this goes on, I don't have a darn clue what goes on, but, we all have stuff that we're dealing with, and I have no doubt that Langdon has a pile of his own problems outside of DPC.

As best I know he's never been more than a day or so late posting a challenge, and is usually spot-on. I say that's pretty darn good in it's own right.

Anyway, seriously not too sure what crazy dog piles are going on about people attacking DPC, but I do know that we're still here, and that the negative naysayers have been at this for ages. (By the way, did you hear that the world is going to end and the prophet of god will return?)...

I have no problem listening to constructive criticism and different viewpoints but I do take homage at someone who is not active on the site (therefore not contributing to the benefit of the site ) telling me how good the past was and nothing but gloom and doom is the future for the site.

The only time we here from Simms is when a thread like this comes around. He must spend his time lurking around waiting for chance to rant his negativity about the site......he should just move on!

I think you meant "umbrage" but it's pretty funny this way ... :-)

I would like to take some of that homage too. Any left?

Then, I guess that by your definition, I'm a "patriot" :-)

But, dear Don, it is YOUR logic which is flawed. No one is denying that "things could be better" at DPC, Don. But it's equally obvious that all the whining isn't going to make those changes happen soon, if ever. And yet, the doomsdayers continue posting their "sky is falling" updates, and berating us darn patriots who continue to have a good time here. Yes, DPC may be a mere kiddie pool when compared to the vast wonders awaiting us "out there". But a whole bunch of us make the best of what is. And for some of us, there's absolutely nothing wrong with playing in the kiddie pool.

Oh, and pass around the homage, please

The difference between that video and this thread is that the horse in the video is alive. ;-)

I've kept my eye on membership numbers as the site slowly dies and each time this conversation comes up. DPC has bled another 150 members and is at 850. It seems to be slowing, but the decline is certain. In December, 2009 it was 1953. On March 6th, 2013 it stood at 1006. Today it is 850.

Well, why don't you re-up? I did. You would make it 851 ! It's only $25.
I had just as soon send in $25 here than contribute to someone's misfortune here and receive not even a thanks.....which I have done more than once. :< ...to the same person no less.

See, this is the part I just don't get. I'm not picking on you, Jason, but it's a good example of people who "check back", lurk, read the threads, etc. Why do that if DPC is no longer of interest to you? And if it isn't, why do you need to drop in only to say "see? I was right, it's dying"? Is it really a matter of pixel width? If so, as you know, every other site has much larger pixel allowances. Is it the challenges? There are numerous other sites which have challenges. Etc., etc. If all the lurkers would just get over that DPC isn't going to change, and yet it is still an awesome place, we wouldn't have a declining membership problem :-)

Ok so there is a vast drop in numbers over the years but out of those 1953 how many really participated in challenges regularly. Maybe some of them just signed up thinking they were going to participate and just never got into it (compulsive signer uppers). I always believe in quality over quantity and would rather have 100 active members than 800 non active.

It doesn't hurt us to have fewer paying members more so than it does Langdon's pockets. I'm sure he can tell that membership has dropped and as an entrepreneur I'm sure that's not his intent. As previously stated WE are DPC not Langdon, he was the initial creator and its left to us to make it whole. Yes there are some improvements that can be done to the house but it takes a lot of effort sometimes to make simple changes as easy as they may sound. But in my opinion I think what we have works effectively and definitely still the best place on the web for your hard earned cash.

We all love to rant and speak our minds because we think Langdon doesn't care about us, but its not about Landgon, its about US! I challenge all of you naysayers to take a step back and remember what you so loved about DPC in the past and bring it back to the forefront. Help make DPC what it once was and stop dragging it down while there are still 850 of us left that still enjoy being in a place that helps our ADD and affliction to an art that we love.

END RANT!!!!

Hey! It's still here! (I check in every week or so.) :-)

I re-upped for a month back in August(first time I've ever renewed for a single month). That period ended and I'm now part of the unwashed masses.

Real life gets in the way but the $25/yr was the best money I ever spent on photography anything.

Guess I'll head over to flickr and try and collect spinning gifs and self-affirming feedback from the Pros. ;)

Hey, neighbor - come back when gif spinning and pleasing plaudits run their course...and when real life moves over a bit.

Fess up Jason, you left when there no longer were mechanics, electricians and other trades people that could give you assistance on your projects of the day.

By the way, I seem to recall that you had promised to come back and inform us on some project you were wording on with your church... how did things turn out.

Please don't jump on me folks, Jason knows I am simply pulling his leg here...:O)

Perhap s Jason is sticking around in the hopes that the site dies it will rise again ;)

but seriously, have things slowed down? Could things use improvement-a little renovation, a Nip Tuck here and there, a little spring cleaning, capitalization.

YES on all counts. seems like we are caught between dying a long slow miserable death and still enjoying it, and dying a long slow miserable death without someone telling us we are not doing anything constructive about it.

when faced with these two options I guess I choose the former, if that makes me a Naive patriot, so be it.
