wow Simms. for some of us this isn't about the owner. for some of us this isn't about the front page. actually for a lot of us. chopped liver to you?

I wasn't complaining about the $25, I was only wondering if I'd be the last one left around here, expected to turn off the lights on my way out.

But it sounds like there will be enough of you wonderful weirdos left to make it worthwhile, so I'll happily hang in there another year.

Just as I was about to head to the subscription page, I got an email from rayethier who apparently would miss me toooooooo much and decided to make sure I hang around.

Thanks for that gift code, Raymee - mmmmmuah

Simms is not poisoning anything. It is just how he looks at things. That's how some nations got to be great hunca muncas: the bottom line, the short run, winners and losers. Chopped liver and truly enlightening comments.

A Beatrix Potter fan, eh? And yup, he's a wicked little mouse indeed :-)

Everyone gets to decide if the 25 bucks is worth it or not to them. If you enjoy the site then feel free to pony up, if not I am not sure why or how this thread will change that. Plain and simple, your money, your choice. The future of the site does not revolve around you or me and will carry on with or without. Sorry to sound so harsh but it is your choice and this thread was not really necessary.

To be fair, Beetle was, I think, simply asking if DPC was going to survive another year, not if it was a value.

Of course, I think the answer to both is yes - we can't mistake Langdon's lack of time, and the fact that he has other priorities as him "not giving a shit about DPC" and just laying back and "lining his pockets"..

Yes, he really should make some investments around here - but DPC is, as best as I can discern, financially viable until the end of time.

Anyway, he's a good guy, and he simply has other priorities - this is still something he cares about to some degree, and he does make some effort, even if it's obviously not his obsession, read his blog sometime - you'll get insights as to how time-crunched the guy is. I totally understand.

The OP asked a perfectly reasonable question, and I for one wouldn't have the temerity to guarantee that this site will last another year, as some seem to be doing.

No matter how devoted the remaining survivors are, this site requires technology: computers, a database, server-side software running on a web server, etc. Things go wrong, and some things take a lot of work to fix (like restoring bad data), more work than a certain someone is willing to do.

So, to be fair, that 25 dollars is a gamble, and whether or not you decide to take that gamble is an individual decision.

I personally keep taking the gamble, because a counter needs a culture.

Seems this problem would not poke up it's ugly head as often as it has recently, if Langdon would put up a green post saying something, anything. We are adults here we understand Life happens, but a word or two every once in a while, might just be the breakwater this place needs sometimes..

Ugh.... since you didn't understand me the first time around, perhaps you could re-read and attempt to comprehend my second post:

There truly was NO need to tell me off simply for wondering out loud if DPC will still be here 12 months from now.

ETA: oops, forgot to say "thanks, Cory".

Where else can you find 12 months of aversion therapy for only $25?

"Aversion therapy is a form of psychological treatment in which the patient is exposed to a stimulus while simultaneously being subjected to some form of discomfort. This conditioning is intended to cause the patient to associate the stimulus with unpleasant sensations in order to stop the specific behavior." !

My update button was gone.

I had no entries in.

I didn't shoot for nine.

I had no ideas.

I kept halfway thinking all night, because I didn't have any entries in --

none at all.

Didn't have any ideas.

The ideas I had, I didn't want to bother to shoot.

I was tired.

I was going to skip yet another challenge.

Was this the beginning of the end?

I crawled over to the computer, found something I shot yesterday that had more than seven things -- cropped it down to seven, and spent a ridiculously long time trying to salvage a "meh" shot.

Yeah -- I'll be here when they cart off Langdon's server for non-payment.

But I won't bother turning the lights off. I'm too sleepy.

G'nite folks!

At least I have an entry in. :)

See!!

That's how tired I am!

I did nine. I might as well have done 7, though -- there's some good stuff in there. And it's not mine.

But I got an entry in. :)

With the right number even. :D

I think this place has me going senile a tad early...

Agreed on all points. I've built websites that took on a life of their own and that I lost interest in maintaining. The platform eventually runs into compatibility issues with server upgrades and things start falling apart. Additionally, hackers eventually find vulnerabilities - kudos to Langdon as we haven't seen that issue that I am aware of, but we're not a big target, either. Point is that eventually DPC - like our sun - will burn out and fade away. And that, my friends, will be the start of the real zombie apocalypse. probably.

Yes, exactly this.

Over the past 10-15 years I've managed a few different sites and forums. And you're right. Once the forum has been hacked or over-run by spammers, then I would generally weigh up how much time it would take me to get it back up and running versus how many people are still using the site.

In the early days I'd have no problem spending a few hours/days restoring a site. But as the numbers of users diminished, and people left for other more interesting sites, my level of interest in maintaining the sites dwindled.

I eventually decided to turn off new user registration (to stop spammers) which had the unfortunate effect of also stopping new users registering. So when you're left with a site with little activity (apart from the odd users posting 'is anyone out there?' type posts) and the domain or hosting comes up for renewal, or something goes wrong with the site, there's no incentive to continue the operation, so I just let it die a peaceful death. DPC has been lucky in that it's running custom forum s/w, and hasn't had any major data outages.

But it's how websites die.

I've read quite a few threads with posts about Langdon's absence and lack of caring about the site. Many of them are quite hateful. Is that really the best way to point out the problem? If those posts were aimed at me, I would probably ask myself why I should spend my time doing something for a group of people who hate me. Would I like to see some changes? Yes. Are they necessary for me to enjoy and benefit from the site? No.

I recently renewed my membership. I did ask myself if the site would last another year, but decided it's worth the risk. As is. With no changes. DPC is what we make it and it is still a great place to learn and share. Even for those of us who are "on the sidelines".

I've poked my nose back in after a hiatus, and surprised to see entries of 40 or 50 participants, when it used be routinely over a hundred.

Is this a trend, or just coincidence regarding the interest level for the weeks' topics?

What she said!! and to add, I wouldn't do this for $25.00 a year from all of us! I'd cry big ol tears not to be able to come over here n read and live vicariously thru all your lives!! Where else can you find a place that everyone has the same interest and live across the globe from each other?? Where else can you meet an itty bitty Aussie that broke your heart but your life was better knowing her even if it was thru this site? Where can you meet such a diversity of personality's that you can relate to? Where else can you find Cory and Art all on one page???

I pay way more for way less entertainment on my TV!!!!!

What they both say!! and to add, I pay way more for TV and don't even look at it that much. In stead I spend my time here. I've been lurking here for several years before I became a full member. Since I became a full member I went away and came back several times. I must admit that sometimes I didn't feel at my place here. I felt as if I was not "enough" photographer to move among you all.
Strangely enough, since I came back last March, I suddenly felt HOME. And I started to learn, with ups and downs, but I was actually learning things.
I'm still one of those that stay aside in most of the topics but damn people, I like it here with you all.
And that is what counts most for me: the people here and the fact that I have a chance to improve now.
