I also heard this morning on the radio, that the opening ceremony which glorified Great Britain's "National Health Scheme" was a dig at the lack of one in the USA!

Not sure if that's what they had in mind, but it was what crossed my mind when I saw it. I get portraying the history of your country, but a tribute to healthcare seemed a little odd to me. As to the tribute to those who died in the bombing--I have no idea why NBC thinks the USA would not want to see it.

That makes sense. The NBC coverage in primetime, especially the gymnastics is nothing more than a US promo video. I'm kinda surprised that NBC doesn't blackout the other lanes in the swimming competitions. Just think, they can use that real estate to promote their new show Go On, which clearly isn't getting enough air time.

HUGE HUGE props to the people of UK (and Europe, it seems) who turned out in record numbers to support both the men's and women's road cycling events. Massive crowds, even today in really lousy weather. Quite nice to see! And oddly, props to NBC for showing darn near all of the races.

Now lets hope we get some of the track cycling events, too, yes?

And I don't watch too much of the evening presentations because the coverage drives me nuts. If I do watch, it's with the sound off. :-)

Yes, but I wonder how many of them would rather have been taking up seats in other sports arenas that are emptied because the people who have been allocated them aren't showing up. empty seats

Such a nothing story those empty seats close crops of 10-20 seats with no context when there a few thousand more people on a wider shot.

Dan boyle was celebrating our nation as a caring all inclusive nation hence the nhs, the typical family etc,

Very self centred and arrogant of Americans to assume its aimed at them when there was an audience of 1 billion, this may come as a shock to some americans but there is a whole world out there ;)

Forget all that.

Women's Beach Volleyball is the hot thing here, lets have more of that.

Enjoyed the opening ceremony immensely. From start to finish it was outstanding. Kudos to the BBC for the amazing coverage they are providing - 24 High Definition and 24 standard definition channels via satellite means everyone can watch their favourite sport live.

My grandson Luke (7) stayed up to watch it and although he fell asleep he loved the queen jumping out of the helicopter. Only today he came running in to tell me it was not her but a stunt double! Bless him.

LOL, ya think?

It reminds me of the old Python skit "News for budgies".

It has been strange and awful watching the coverage, where we are expected to only be interested in "Our" potential medal winners, because we must not have any interest in the games themselves. Instead of being shown the events we get human interest stories and reasons to cheer on certain athletes. A few years ago we were in Jamaica for the games and it was so much more fun to see the events played out as they happened with minimal packaging. There is drama in the sport, but NBC wants to be sure we are spoonfed the emotional pablum.

It is a shame when people critize what was supposed to be a celebration of sporting excellent from around the world, a celebration of all who strived to be the best in their chosen sport, from the huge nations with over a hundred members, to those who have just one person to represent their country. Their pride is no less than those whose countries have spent millions training them to the peak of perfection. Who cares if it cost £9 billion or £90 billion, it's about pride, honour and belief, belief in ones ability to be the best in the world.

Thousands of volunteers worked their arses off to provide a show of stunning britishness! Yet, in the midst of this celebration, the USA network decided that honouring the victims of the 7/7 bombings in London should be cut! I was at home after having an operation for removal of my kidney due to cancer when it was anounced on 6/7/2005 that London had won the Olympics. A day later, we had to endure the news of the 7/7 bombings!

I wonder how you guys in the US would have reacted had we cut a tribute to 9/11 from our broadcasts, just in case someone was upset and that it didn't fit in with national thinking.

Of course the ceremony celebrated UK, it's the London Olympics, and we are weird, we like quirky, and we understand satire and irony. It was great, even I had a tear in my eye during the 7/7 tribute. I really think we done good this time, even the torch ceremony was different from all that have gone before. And, of course, we have Mr Bean!

Regardless of medals etc, I wonder what the closing ceremony holds in store for us.

I think the whole thing is excellent and if anyone wants to whine and binge about it they can kiss my circular muscle, I am thoroughly enjoying EVERYTHING about the Olympics. (even the mad traffic in/out of the city)

It is typically a once in a life time event for a city so embrace it and have some fun, as for the nay sayers you always have those that would have done things better in their own minds but hey they were never asked.... I love watching the Olympics and am truly amazed at how certain athletes can just run away from the best in the world, with so many great athletes you would think they would all be pretty even but there always seems to be one person who runs away with an event. I always pull for the underdog, I loved the Jamaican Bob Sled team....lol

I just saw a terribly terrific moment. At the men's high bar, one of the photographers was scratching his head trying to figure out why his shots were coming in all black, shook the camera, smack the side, couldn't figure it out. I knew the entire time while watching as he was facing the TV cameras...

HIS LENS CAP WAS ON THE ENTIRE TIME!!!!

The problem with the badminton fiasco event doesn't just lie with the competitors, but the organizers who set up the tournament in a way that it could be advantageous in the overall tournament to lose a match so that they would be paired with an easier team for the next round. In that case,, losing a match intentionally becomes part of a reasonable strategy to win the tournament.
