I wasn't really interested in the opening ceremony, I left it on as background music.

5 minutes later, I was glued to the screen - It was amazing! - Beautifully organised and choreographed, the lights, the music, the fireworks, amazing!

I ended up wishing I'd gone. Once in a lifetime that was.

Can't say that I care.

I did not watch the opening ceremonies, likely will not watch the closing ceremonies, or probably nothing in the middle either.

I consider this to be an unbelievably overpriced event. There is no doubt that the games are the source of a great deal of viewing interest by a myriad of people, just not me as I have better things to do than to remain glued to events happening on the small screen.

Considering the staggering price tag, surely we as a society could have diverted some of those funds to something that would have proved beneficial to mankind, like scientific research.

Just another man's view.

I think "inspiring us to a sense of global community" is a worthy goal, myself. Beautiful ceremony, still watching it here.

... and I too share this view, but when one considers that the latest estimate of the total cost of the Olympics for the Brits will be a staggering $38.5 billion, perhaps we ought to consider downgrading it a tad.

The Parade of Nations is great, that's where I am now. Also (dare I say it?) I'm enjoying the commercials very much.

What the heck, Matt L talks through the Queens National Anthem and then calls the greatest dying children's hospital in England., depiction in the games as
"Ohhhh That is creepy" OOOOO and talking and comparing how amazing America where at the Olympics compared to the English..,,,

And they never EVER shut UP, they just keep talking and talking, even when little children are singing, and then they took an advert BREAK 5 seconds into one of the best Queen Songs ever,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

bar all that American crap talking and talking over every single thing that happened,,,,, it was so totally fabulous. I am so proud, I hope that this brings our English younger generation into some kind of respect and awe at was was and still can be.

I know I am, and damn it proud, of what was, what is and what could be I hope that the 2 younger generations understand what could be, what is and how they could change what 5/10th of them could be. We where once a great nation, I hope they can understand or learn a tiny bit of what was, of what is, of what they could be.,

I made my kids stand and bow/curtsy when the Queen of England walked into the stadium and sing God Save The Queen. (((yeah they thought I had lost my mind, maybe I have, but I am old school English))

Respect. Honour. Dignity. Self sacrificing and a stiff upper lip, that is England and I am proud of it.

I was gobsmacked that QE2 actually appeared with Daniel Craig (as James Bond) in that film clip. How much flattery (and promises of featuring her Corgis heavily) did Danny Boyle have to do? Props to HRH.

Total Olympics© junkie!!!! Loved MOST of the opening ceremony (the pastoral "era" was a bit slooooowwww), keeled over at the queen jumping out of the 'copter, Mr. Bean's bit, etc. Loved that the commentors couldn't keep up with the parade of nations.

Love gymnastics, swimming (regular and synchronized), diving, weightlifting, track, and about 10 others. May not be entering many challenges in the next couple of weeks :-)

Ray, normally I would agree with you, but the Olympics turns the world into a (mostly) loving family for 2 weeks every 4 years. I think it's admirable. A billion people are watching it for free. It's only if you want to be there that you've got to shell out money. Plus, they've turned a blighted area of the city into jobs, housing, and a source of price for many Londoners.

Another way of looking at it, as someone who knows the area, is that they've bulldozed and destroyed large parts of East London and its facinating culture and communities and turned it into a bland, faceless property developers dream. Blighted? My friends that live there certainly see it as blighted now.

I agree with Ray. Particularly as we are in a recession and have the most class divisive, vindictive and destructive government in memory who seem intent on pushing ideology over sense and punishing the most vulnerable and less well off in society for the mistakes of the rich. I didn't watch the opening cermony but some of it sounded good. The celebration of the NHS for example, must have made some squirm seeing as the government are in the process of pretty much destroying it.

Still, at the heart of it, it's about the sport and for those that like sport it should be an exciting time. Literally everything else about the Olympics has been obnoxious and obscene though.

Not posted for a while but felt the need here.

Clive - in terms of financial morals, I think this is the wrong tree to bark up. The cost of the Olympics is dwarfed by bailouts, the smoke and mirrors of quantitative easing and tax evasion from the very wealthy. Given that the government is firmly opposed to measures that might support growth, I choose to see the Olympics as the only stimulus package they've left in place. I'd much rather see the money spent here than propping up banks that continue with the obscene and immoral bonus culture.

In terms of the regeneration versus commercialisation agenda, cities need to develop. I used to live in Bethnal Green, well before the artists' takeover, I have no nostalgia for what it once was - authenticity alone doesn't equate to value.

For me, the opening ceremony was exciting and poignant and I'd say two things about the London Olympics:

1. Having got it, it was pretty essential that we give a good account of ourselves

2. Offering an opportunity for Mitt Romney to get himself into some deep water does a service for the entire world!

I'm glad to have brought you out of semi-retirement with my bah humbug Paul! :)

To be honest, i don't really hugely disagree with anything you've said. You're totally right about the cost being a tiny figure compared to the real financial problems. I do feel that this Olympics has shown up what is ugly and wrong in society- the rampant greed and absurd protectionism of the corporate sponsors for example. But there are certainly lots of good things as well (the sport, sport development for youth etc) . You're right cities need to develop and i can understand that myself and my friends may be guilty of misplaced nostalgia or something. My son lives in that area and works right next to the olympic stadium in that huge shopping centre. I think that place is hideous but i tend to really dislike all big shopping centres. He's 21 and loves it. I'm just grumpy i guess.

Like i said, i didn't see the opening ceremony but from i've heard it was pretty spectacular if kind of weird. Which is a good thing i'd say.

alot of left wing propaganda in there as well, nhs spending is ring fenced so no funding cuts there, yes we have the fear and paranoia of the doctors leading the care approach rather than a wealth of middle managers, but everyones hates change.

the honest truth is we had to cut somethings we couldnt go on doing what labour was doing and borrowing and borrowing to infalte the public sector to live the lie, its like that mate we all have who has the flash car the flash house the flash gear everyone thinks they are loaded till one day it all crashes around them and it turns out they have nothing and it was all a lie based on credit, we couldnt mortgage our kids futures just to keep a bloated public sector, ive got mates on £30k+ working in the public sector on final salary pension schemes and they dont work hard, they arent driven etc i always say to them come do a week as a self employed person see what its really like.

yeah we are cutting too hard and i hate the way our politics has become tribal and ideological vs being what the ppl actually need but its not going to change, labour is funded by the unions and the Tories by the rich and business how will it ever change.

i think the olympics are a great thing for this country and really enjoying them so far, even though im 200 miles away.
