Member challenges are for those people who have paid there $25 for the year and are usually Advanced or Expert challenges. Plus they can enter any of the other challenges which are announced on Monday (usually only Member challenges on this day), Wednesday and Friday (only Member challenges on this day) plus any bonus challenges. Non- paying members can only enter the Exclusive challenges (which are usually Basic Editing) and announced on Wednesdays.

I think that tanguera is suggesting that it's difficult now to differentiate between the challenge types, whereAs before, they were labelled "Exclusive Open", etc. Perhaps they could be better labelled.

Isn't the colour of the icon different? The member challenges wear a blue shirt, the open challenges a grey one...

This decision reduces the number of challenges I can vote on. I will not pay to vote. So, I suspect I'll not be voting on any challenges from here on out. Voting is one thing that registered members can do to justify their presence. To limit this further doesn't make sense to me. I've enjoyed my stay here, even after I mostly quit making images myself. I felt voting kept my toes in the waters til I had time to come back as a paying member.
Thanks for the website Langdon. All good things come to an end. Time to move on. It appears I've completed my religious studies in Rant too. :)

maybe i'm just being insensitive but i've always thought that if you can afford a camera, computer and internet service then $25 per year should not be that big of a deal

I must not have been paying attention...

but isnt the only difference from how it was, and how it is now, one open challenge? (instead of choosing between two)? or did something else change and I dont get it?

The addition of a Friday members challenge.

Socom as you only joined in April 2011, maybe there have always been Friday challenges during your membership period? This is something new for DPC and maybe started with the Fine Art challenge at the end of March.

I don't think this is anything to celebrate. Langdon is making it clear that the open challenge is being dropped do to a decreased number of entries. As new members undoubtedly come from people who try dpc from nonmember challenges, I would assume the number of members are also dropping.
I think the recession is one reason we have fewer entries. Photography equipment for the non professional is a luxury. I also think interest in digital photography is decreasing because the novelty of digital photography has worn off.
Being a business man, Langdon sees the need to increase member registration, so he is making membership more attractive. This is only a short term fix, because new members ultimately come from nonmembers.
I see this as a cry for help. How can we get new people to try dpc?

You have to consider this moves from the points of views of the members and registered users.

For members this is excellent news, and as one I'm quite happy with the increase of competitions for me.
But for registered users it isn't. It is certainly incentive to become a member, but can we sink new members with one open challenge? It remains to be seen. Still though.

Where's my Friday challenge this week!? Speed challenge to start this off would be fun! :)

Friday would be 12:01 EST (server time). So for those confused it would still be a rollover on Sunday night, Tuesday night and Thursday night.

Good point. I'm catching up on a spot of sleeper's block so don't mind what I say.

when is Langdon himself going to enter a challenge again?

He has held the highest rated image on this website for years. Why mess with that?

Have to say I agree. If numbers are dwindling, let's ask why and what can be done to remedy that. The changes might help to convince a few current members who were considering leaving to hang around and it might convince a few registered users to become members. However, it might also backfire and drive away registered users because they don't have any choice of challenges any more.

As an aside, there seems to be a widespread assumption that members want more advanced/expert challenges. Personally, I don't. I prefer to keep my editing simple and as such tend to enter more open challenges, so that I'm not competing against the PS gurus. So, if these changes are to stay, how about a few more basic editing member challenges?

As a solution to this, what about allowing registered users to enter one challenge PER WEEK of their choice? Or would the programming for this be too complicated?

Looks like great news to me.

"that if you can afford a camera, computer and internet service then $25 per year should not be that big of a deal"

I certainly agree with Smardaz.

No Aussie discount I know of -- are you possibly also paying for extra Portfolio space?

Since registered members could only enter ONE of the open challenges under the old system, I can't see what has changed for them. They can still enter one open challenge - it's just that they don't have two to choose from. New registered members would not perceive anything different.

As for leaving the site because of the change, all I can say is that some people are just looking for an excuse to do so. For me, someone who struggles CONSTANTLY to pay the bills, $25 is NOTHING, especially considering all I get from this site. For the price of three cocktails, a carton of cigarettes, 5 lattes, or a small cake (all of which last mere minutes), you can have a year of all the harassment, disappointment, and ego bashing you can handle.

And yes, Louis understood what I was trying to ask... Thank you for interpreting, sir :-)
