Really? A whole carton of smokes in just minutes? I'm gonna go ahead and suggest that you seek immediate help. :)

Hmmm, maybe I'm dense, but I can't tell the difference now between open and member challenges...

Member challenges are for those people who have paid there $25 for the year and are usually Advanced or Expert challenges. Plus they can enter any of the other challenges which are announced on Monday (usually only Member challenges on this day), Wednesday and Friday (only Member challenges on this day) plus any bonus challenges. Non- paying members can only enter the Exclusive challenges (which are usually Basic Editing) and announced on Wednesdays.

Hummmm thought I just paid $30 again... Is there an Aussie discount??? LOL (actually I have no brain cells left)

I found a way to charge people $30, and the extra five goes directly to my camera equipment fund. :P

Where's the "like" button when I need one?

Pressing that update button is stressful.

I am a tremendous fan of this format. Three challenges to enter at any time, plus the monthly flogging free study. Excellent news.

Comparatively speaking.... YEAH!

Is the purpose to get overall participation down, or to get registered (paying) users use up, or both?

I would be interested to see participation statistical analysis done one these changes as far as the number of challenges entered on both sides.

Also, does this solve the original problem of having a very large number of participants in the open challenges, or is that no longer an issue?

As a non-paying member, I feel like a non-voter talking politics. =\ However, it's curious that this change seems to make the site more exclusive.

I also agree with the new format. Now I can lose sleep on Mondays, Weds, and Fridays instead. I really am a glass half full sort of person. Change is good.

On another note, what if memberships could be given away or extended as the result of winning some certain challenge? This would encourage all users to enter, and would possibly introduce a non-paying member to the benefits of having a membership.

I'm willing to give away a few memberships, lottery style, to anybody who adds me to their Favorite Photographer list... Oh, wait, that's against the TOS. ;-D

I believe that's the main factor -- the two Open challenges have rarely had more than 250 combined entries for a few months now, and fairly often had fewer than 150.

Maybe only having one open challenge will help that. :-D

The changes might help to convince a few current members who were considering leaving to hang around and it might convince a few registered users to become members. However, it might also backfire and drive away registered users because they don't have any choice of challenges any more.

As a solution to this, what about allowing registered users to enter one challenge PER WEEK of their choice? Or would the programming for this be too complicated?

I started as registered and was a member for a few years then dropped it for a few years. I paid up a while back because of the threads about mentors or group discussions on topics - nothing to do with challenges which I have not entered in some time. IMO that is the way to improve the experience and increase membership - increase the ability to learn and discuss serious topics. Most of the threads are not that deep (and I understand the benefit of the general discussion and banter which has kept me coming back even while just a registered user). Anyway enough of that stuff.....

If memory serves me... I believe you have been down that path a long time ago and so I take your word that it's against the TOS :-)

This is absolutely awesome news. Really appreciate the idea behind the new format.

Even cynical old me thinks this is a good idea.

I miss having a choice. However, I'm figuring I still have a choice -- it's just between the tuesday and thursday challenge. And it will be nice to not have to choose if they're both good topics!

However, I'm already spending way too much time on DPC entering two challenges a week. I wonder if I'm still going to married for long trying to enter three challenges per week! :)

It is because of me! I know I am the culprit! When I submit an entry then I always have to face over 200 ;) and when I dont then its fewer than 150 ;) and Last many months I haven't submit any entry ;)

in Other words keep easy open challenge and let me submit entry then we will have more entries!!!!!!

kidding aside, I agree I am also noticing that people are submitting less entries these days then if I go back and look a few months back. Also having two open challenge was not really helping but diving the group.

Great change, might have to take the plunge and become blue again :)
05/13/2011 01:31:48 AM · #73
The change is fine by me, but I can't help wondering what difference it makes to have lots of entries per challenge, or not so many. If we are voting one challenge of 200 entries or two challenges of approximately 100 each, we still vote as many times. Maybe it's more interesting to be looking at two different themes.

Why would there be? There was one announced last night after roll-over (technically Monday).
