Jury's just a sideshow; as always, site members will be awarding the usual ribbons. So you have twice the chances to win :-) |

They exist to make sure the idiots voting don't get to pick all the winners, in effect, they are there to reward "true" fine art shots that will likely be passed over by the majority of voters. |
so a slight chance of seeing art and not hallmark cards or postcard or corporate stock? great! bet we still get lots of water drops and big buck fashion models ... and lets not leave out huge borders! */* gl everyone! |

Jury: bear_music, louis levt ursula drachoo paulbtlw melethia bspurgeon posthumous
******************
On behalf of the jury, I'd like to report that our deliberations are finished and our awards and honorable mentions are finalized. It's been a great experience and the process went very smoothly, for which I personally thank each and every member of the jury. We didn't all agree with each other (of course) but we hammered out an eminently workable consensus.
Rollover is tonight. We're going to delay announcing the juried awards until Monday evening, so that the "real" ribboners get their time in the sun without the distraction of comparison with our choices. We hope you'll all join us for a champagne reception on Monday evening as the jury's results are unveiled :-)

Looking forward to the results (and the differences with the voters). I'm sure you all made a great choice. Thanks for all the effort! |

Nothing like grouping all of the voters into a nice pigeon hole. What absolute drivel...and then we wonder why some take offence at the elitism displayed by some individuals in this venue.
Fine art is subjective at best and the only true interpretation of the intent of the image rests almost exclusively with the author of the said image. All we as a collective are left with is our own interpretation of "What is" and none of us can truly state for a fact that ours is the true definition.
I for one am glad that we have a jury in this instance, if for no other reason that I might expand my horizons and gain a better grasp of what others consider fine arts, the nuances associated with such art, and to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the points of view others have in this regard.
I am NOT however prepared to call all regular voters IDIOTS.

Neither are we (the jury). In fact, we wouldn't call *any* voters "idiots"...
In my mind, at least, one of they key issues with DPC voting is that images which evoke strong reactions from voters tend not to score well, because these images polarize people; for every lover, there's a hater, like as not. Therefore, to a certain extent, DPC ribbons tend to go to "safe" images, images that don't give anybody a reason to dislike them. Edgier images, more extreme images, even very good ones, tend to finish a little further down because they get more negative votes.
In my mind, that's not the best way to evaluate "art", whatever "art" may be to you, or her, or him, or even "them" collectively. And the reason I pushed to have the first "juried challenge" a ways back was so that we could compare what sort of results would come from a more limited pool of judges, all of whom value and appreciate the controversial, compared with the wider pool of DPC-voters-at-large, many of whom DO value the controversial, of course, but equally many of whom seem to reject it.
We don't claim that our juried results are in any way "better" than the results the voters came up with; we're just interested in how they may be different.

Nicely put, Robert.
I was going to write something here about how I voted and why, but I'll save it and maybe post it after the results are in. Cheers, |

A very nice response my friend and I wholeheartedly agree with it.
I would hasten to point out however, that my ire was NOT directed at the "Jury" nor the decision making process.

I am not sure if you guys remember, years ago I was begging for a juried challenges, but official ones... which means, juries would vote use site code, rather than doing it as a side challenge... so all those ribbons would be result of juries not everybody.
I think this is the closest we can get. My case with that was, DPC has all kinds of people, not only photographer, which could affect the results. Most people who are not photographer sees a colorful photo and go "Aaaah!" and vote high. However, seasoned photographer sees things differently and votes accordingly.
I still believe DPC should have challenges with jury votes, maybe once a month. However, it's not gonna happen in my lifetime, most likely ever.
just to clarify this, because I don't think voters are here idiots, but just inexperienced people who are coming from all kinds of fields. |

Did the jury comment on images in the challenge? If so I am more impressed that I got no comments from them! The art of being unseen. :) |

Did you check the stealth mode box?
Last time it ran I believe the jury kept their comments unsigned and only released them on their selections. I assume they were busy enough not to run through them as both jurors and regular voters. |

Didn't think it was. I'm sorry if I gave that impression. Your post just provided a good stepping-off point for me to express something I'd been wanting to say.

Basically, we didn't comment publicly during the challenge. We'll be posting a thread on Monday with many excerpts from our communications during the voting. I believe some of the jurors may undertake personal commenting after the results are posted as well, but I'm not sure. We'll have to wait and see :-)
