1st challenge, looking back I'm very surprised it scored 5.5!
149th entry. 6.2.
One thing is for certain, I had no ability to create a portrait for a nude challenge in 12/2007 when I started entering challenges. I've absolutely refined my process through the criticism, good and bad, I've received here. I also don't think scores necessarily reflect growth as I now feel much more comfortable entering a photograph that may not fit a DPC mold of the day, even if I expect it to score poorly. This is a great place! Can't complain about $25/year tuition!!! |

Well, I knew I liked the stuff, but about a month ago it dawned on me that my ribbons are all rusty old stuff.
And the two collections that I recently posted are two of my favorite places....old stuff.
I think after I get off work today I'm gonna go hunt me up a junkyard......8>)

I disagree completely. I like your missed focus shot a lot better than the waterfall shot.
Plus, for a fair comparison, you should take this waterfall shot of yours:
incredible improvement :D |
Still a lower score.
The water fall shot is just a fluck, IMO, otherwise my score would of kept on going up! Not down. |
Even when I look back at the ones that I scored low on in recent challenges (because we all missed the mark at some point). Technically the photo is still alot better than my first few challenges. I'm starting to realize what is technically wrong with my photos and noticing them more and more before I click the shutter rather than after I entered the challenge. My lastest photo in nude, I knew what the comments were going to complain about before I entered....and made attempts to slightly hide it. |

FIRST
LAST This is not my best by far, but it's 8th best overall of my scores.
Not much to show, lol. I've broken 6 only three times and my first challenge entry was the day I joined. Didn't even know how to use the software with the camera yet.
I have learned on my own that I don't know how to effectively use the free noise reduction software I have as I go overboard and things soften too much. In my three years here, I've received 888 comments of which most were constructive and helpful! Thanks all!
Some of my stuff from last year, both challenges and just "stuff" seem to be my best. Guess I'm disengaged or trying to use the software too much and not letting the shots stand on their own merit. There were some not to bad shots in the middle, but i do think I've learned from this place. Now I need to figure out what my niche is, if I even have one!

last: 6.5687
oh, 9 months, 74 challenges.

I learned a lot from the first to the last. I learned the importance of a nice background(even though that didin't come into play in the my last shot), the importance of as little noise possible, high shutter speed, sharpness and probably most importantly the power of lighting. |

Scores aside - there is so much to learn here. I owe most anything I know how to do with a camera either directly or indirectly because of this community here. |
Looking at some of the ridiculous comments you got on your first entry (which I love) I'm surprised you stuck around! |

My first entry scoring 4.54
My last entry scoring 6.78
I have only two missed open challenges in between these shots and have a learned new things every week. It really is mind blowing to see how much I have picked up from DPC over the past 12 months even if it isn't always reflected in my scores. Another ten years of DPC and I may be able to turn pro!

Well I've learned alot in 91 challenges. I have grown as a photographer by learning my camera taking it off auto, listening to people here on how to do different things, and going to school. My scores do not show it and that's because I don't take pictures to please the masses.
my first 4.2 my highest 6.0

The OP has a great point, and I really need to get back into the challenges myself. I haven't entered in far too long - and until I do enter again, I certainly won't meet my goals of breaking 6.0 or 6.5. Can't win if you don't play...

Nice to do a checkpoint once in a while...
1st: 4.5310
84th: 5.4262
... and within this 0.8952 difference there is much more I've learned and absorbed than that fraction can tell.

Then there's this which shows the growth over the 82 challenges.... ups and downs but the trend is one of improvement.

First entry, from January of 2005:
Score: 5.3652
Most recent entry:
Score: 5.3143
As you can see, I have not improved at all. But do not let this discourage anyone! Most people, as you've seen from this thread, improve tremendously!! :-) |

But the real story is that in between these you have five ribbons, one HM, three entries with scores >7, lots of other great stuff, and enough respect around here to have an honorary side challenge named after you. So please don't go around discouraging those newbies. :-) |

LOL, was just about to write almost the same comments. Deb has almost 100 challenge entries with a 6+ score! |

I do not mind the lack of improvement by DPC standards. I can see in my own work improvements that have come from hanging around this place. Those improvements may or may not be noticeable by anyone other than me, and may or may not (in most cases may not) result in scoring achievements. But I still, when I stay away from the challenges, take a great deal of enjoyment in my pictures. Now if I could just stay away from the challenges....
And the aforementioned example was just a wee bit tongue in cheek, you know. I do realize I have scored well on occasion. Not always with what I think SHOULD score well, but that's beside the point! :-) |

Like Melethia, I usually shoot and enter what I like. My scoring average isn't very high, but I have learned a lot and even scored a fluke-blue ribbon.
