GRAND FLEETING PRONOUNCEMENT

The Third Place Non-Binding Imaginary Ribbon goes to:

Sure it's manipulative. Sure I don't get the emotion. But at the end of the day, in reviewing all of the images, it wins a ribbon. Besides, its in color. The trend thus far has been black and white.

The Second Place Non-Binding Imaginary Ribbon goes to:

Not brilliant, not earth shattering, but well seen. This is why I carry my camera with me most all of the time. In case I recognize something like this and take a picture and enter it into a sub-contest of the main contest of an obscure website in the 21st century and get a "kudos, well done" from a stranger.

The First Place Non-Binding Imaginary Ribbon goes to:

Which I think is a great abstract image. Despite perceived political messages that others have taken from it, despite the human faces that bother some (and I like ubique's comment on another image that stated " I wouldn't hang it on my wall either, but that's no place for good photographs anyway; they belong in books."), even taken out of context the image is appealing on a visceral level.

I only wish I had awarded my make believe non-binding imaginary first place ribbon before posthumous awarded his to avoid the perceived influence of the cult of "him through which all things are Posthumous".

The post exuberance depression or exhilaration of getting a ribbon from the esteemed bestowers that preceded me, undoubtedly makes my imaginary ribbons anticlimactic.

Congratulations to the winners, there were some super shots in this challenge. Each of the judges deserve a ribbon for providing the perceptive comments, and Joe deserves the grand trophy for hosting the whole thing. Great challenge!

Congrats to the winners! And thanks to everyone for submitting the photos. There were certainly some magical ones here. It was great to see photos that had stories or mystery woven into the scenes.

Thanks to Joe for hosting this too!

I did not read any comments on entries that were mean. Honest critique should always be welcomed. To learn and grow as a photographer you need more than just pats on the back. :)

I also noticed you have won two ribbons on DPC in the past year...good work, hardly what I would call getting lousy scores or kicked around. Just my 2 cents Canadian.

Try not to let it bother you too much. (I know, easier said then done!) Mine was only well received by a handful of people. Even Posthumous seemed to not really care for it. (However, I will credit him that he always tries to say something positive.) I think being so far outside the box that it does poorly in a Posthumous challenge should make me the winner.

So what prompted you to dump the negativity in here? Please share...

Hmn, something to that, yospiff. Maybe.

I haven't finished or decided on my comments. One thing that I would really like next time (if there is one), is NOT to see the other comments before commenting. (Would really like to prove that I finally saw the toothbrush on my 5th or 6th attempt without reading the comments).

Also, digifotojo, I didn't see dumping or negativity in the comments, but candid criticism and some wonderfully articulated spontaneous reactions. If a photo one likes (one's own or another's) fails to do something for a viewer, there is ALWAYS a question of how much that failure belongs to the photo, and how much to the viewer.

This is a very valid point and worth considering in any future side challenges like this.

Reading a lot of the comments you can see in some cases where the commentator has been influenced by a previous comment which is to be expected I suppose.

But on the whole it has been a very successful side challenge that has displayed some fantastic images that would normally be over looked in the regular challenges.

A big thank you and congratulations should go to jdannels and posthumous for putting this on. Also thanks to all the commentators who have spent the time to examine these images and share their views on them.

When are we supposed to post our image to our own Portfolio? And then, comments would have to be transferred by quoting them in the new picture's comment thread, right?
02/05/2009 03:55:28 PM · #65
I've copied the comments into the photographers remarks block and put a user link before each one. Just waiting ont he go-ahead to move it out of my workshop.

Good idea, maybe I'll try that.

I am going to make a new thread with some instructions and the awards, so that hopefully in the end we will have a full list of image thumbs, that go to the image in the photographer's profile and the images in my portfolio will disappear.
If people would like to start copying or quoting from their image in my portfolio and transferring to theirs feel free. Just remember to keep your image hidden or in your workshop. Technically awards and comments can still be given out until midnight of the 7th server time so please do not reveal your entry until then. :)
I think I will probably quote all the comments on my entry and post it as a single comment in my portfolio, this way I have the names of the commentors but feel free to do what ever you like. :)

duh is me, I thought it was all over as PH had made his selection, so I commented on my own.

People, let it be known, I am an idiot and deserve public flogging

It's disappointing you feel that way. Surely it ought to have been apparent that this challenge would attract some more robust comments than a regular challenge? First because the sort of person who'd want to enter it would likely be less needful of the "OMG, that's like soooooooo cool!!!! :-)" comments. And second because the 'judges' were encouraged to comment on every image, so that abstaining as an act of mercy was not possible.

I have read every comment and saw none that seemed "negative" by any reasonable measure. Some were not supportive, some were even mildly disapproving, but that's not negative.

I'm posting all of them in the photographer's comments as we go (I have the original shot hidden in my portfolio)

I think he means that's 50 comments that will be removed from our stats when you disappear the hosting images: for those of us who commented on them all, anyway.

I suppose we COULD go back and paste these comments in ourselves with copy/paste on each image, but who has the energy?
